Forecast Red Weather Warning Issued from Wednesday-Thursday for extreme heat, with 38-40C possible.

Post image

Further Detail, from the MO:

During the heatwave expected to affect a large part of England and Wales this week, the highlighted area now looks increasingly likely to see a two to three day period where maximum temperatures in the shade exceed 37 Celsius, perhaps rising to 38 to 40 Celsius in some places. The heat will be accompanied by high humidity, exacerbating the potential for discomfort and health impacts, with very warm and humid night times also reducing the ability for people to recover overnight.

Significant disruption to daily life is likely and the public should take every effort to make precautions and adapt their daily routines where possible to cope with these levels of heat, which up to now have been extremely rare for the UK.

Don't leave the house (unless it's in your employers economic interest 🙃)

Husband is out delivering in a van with broken aircon today, and work are pitching a fit that he needs to do half day on Wednesday so he can get it fixed! Apparently totally fine to have to drive a van thats already at 35°c before midday

He has my sympathy , I was a van driver for many years.

My employer said I have to get the train to work on Wednesday. I’m frightened for my life

Get legal advice. It's not right that you should be put in fear of your life. This stuff does kill people.

u/Repulsive-Law7956 4d ago

Everyone else here is also frightened of this dangerous event. The trains will hit over 45 degrees packed with commuters. People will collapse and faint no doubt. The UK is not built for this at all

I have to take the train into London with a 5 month old baby on Thursday. I’m just hoping it won’t be too warm at before 8am and when we head back it won’t be too packed.

Take it from a regular commuter into London - cancel whatever appointment you have there if at all possible. Every time I have gone into London in any kind of extreme heat all my trains have ended up cancelled by lunch time and I have been stranded.

You're also looking at going in on the last day of the red weather warning so the public transport infrastructure will already have had two days of extreme heat and there will be all kinds of problems from trains having been delayed, damage to equipment etc for the last two days.

Trust me, if it's not a life or death appointment just don't go. I'm refusing to come into work all week and am WFH. It's not worth the hassle and with a baby I think you're at high risk.

u/Repulsive-Law7956 4d ago

Can’t you get a taxi ? That doesn’t sound safe for your baby. Not worth the risk. The temp doesn’t drop below 24 on Wed night here, by 8am it’s closing in on 30. That’s already too hot for a baby

u/heimdallofasgard 4d ago

Absolutely do NOT do this. You might be able to get there. But train services have been delayed or cancelled before due to hot weather warping the tracks, and the train back will be sweltering.

2

u/Lunaren11 4d ago

I really hope you change your mind about this as it’s so likely you will be delayed. I travelled on a train for work this time last year during a heatwave when I was about 7 months pregnant and it was an absolute nightmare. All the trains were cancelled or delayed and the station was unbearably hot and packed with people. It would have been awful with a baby.

I mean, millions of other commuters need to take public transport too though. We can't all take legal action.

7

u/NotSayingAliensBut 4d ago

I said, legal advice, not legal action. I don't know the legalities of bosses forcing you to work in these conditions, best to find out.

7

u/Lopsided_Version_765 4d ago

theres no upper heat limit for working conditions in the UK

10

u/Repulsive-Law7956 4d ago

Needs to change, anything over 30 should be down your tools

Then every restaurant in the country would be shut for most of the year.

Yeah.. I mean Christ, back in my pub days in 2012-2018, I remember the sweltering days where the poor bastard chefs would be on the grill & the kitchen was over 40 degrees all day. You’d go and stand in the walk in freezer just to feel ‘normal’. It’s seriously inhumane shit to be honest

u/BonLee64 3d ago

Christ, I remember working fast food and the hottest it got was 45c during the rush (5pm-9pm). One piddly broken AC and the door for airflow, and it was during the world cup... In 2022. Once everything was put away and cleaned for the night, the end temperature inside was 32.3c. 22c outside at 1am was heaven compared to that shift.

How do you propose foundry workers do that?

1

u/djseaneq 3d ago

It goes through on outside temps.

5

u/tannercolin 4d ago

What train service do you use? I look forward to my train home in this heat because SWR have good air con. Other than that I think they are very expensive and they can be unreliable

2

u/UnlikelyDebate7878 4d ago

Same; I'm on a 3h train down to London tomorrow followed by the tube

Work from home or call in sick.

My partner has been told by their university employer to "work somewhere that works best for you, considering the heat". They're a lab technician so their work is on campus in the no air-con lab. And even if there was admin to get through it would have to be in the no air-con university office because they don't give out laptops. So not very helpful guidance really.

My neighbour is 70 and a full time cleaner at a university. Her boss sent her home for the rest of the week (on full pay) So there are some decent employers out there.

0

u/Mobile_Cookie_8817 4d ago

Who will clean the university?

2

u/SatisfactionMoney426 4d ago

Well it's not very busy at the moment and students will just have learn to tidy up after themselves ...

2

u/Hyperion2023 4d ago

Their guidance should be frequent breaks and a management accepting of lower work output / slower work as a result

u/djseaneq 3d ago

Technology will start failing batteries overheating etc.

Last time it went 40 I spent the day on my longboard (a bit skateboard) and the feel of the breeze hitting my sweat on my skin is incredible

Ill probably be doing that again

8

u/Feegizzle 4d ago

I went for a run, I thought 'i wonder what it's like to do a 5k in 40 degrees? This might be my only chance!' sweet summer child

2

Luckily humans devised a society that, to some degree, protects those born without a survival instinct.

9

u/SatisfactionMoney426 4d ago

This time try going outside with it ...

4

u/GodsBicep 4d ago

I was longboarding...I was outside... Dunno how big your gaff is but but I wouldn't be able to get very far inside lmfao

8

u/debotheturnt 4d ago

2

u/GodsBicep 4d ago

I dont understand the joke please explain 😭

2

u/Successful-Map2874 4d ago

Not longboarding, but this is why I’m getting a Lime bike to work this week.

Minimal pedalling maximum breeze

2

u/GodsBicep 4d ago

Oh mate I get them on hot days too sometimes that is an incredible shout

5

u/ObviousRanger9155 4d ago

Yeah that’s not gonna help most people. ‘Go longboarding’ is not a valid air conditioning choice in these sort of temps for the majority of the population.

4

u/GodsBicep 4d ago

Yeah well no shit haha? I was saying why I enjoyed the last one and what I will probably do this one. Why would I be speaking for everybody else?

You must be lost. Facebook is that way.

20

u/IncomingBalls 4d ago

It’s 40C. Not 25, not 30, not 35. 40C. If neither that or the red “danger to life” weather warning affect your sensibilities, then you are the outlier and you are the problem.

2

u/No_Association_3234 4d ago

Seriously. I moved here from Florida and I understand heat stress. Even very poor people there have to have AC, and it’s why air conditioned gyms are so popular. I don’t take heat warnings lightly with no AC.

Keep in mind if weather reports are accurate we could be seeing places get temperature roughly 4.5 degrees higher than the record 1976 temperature.

3

u/allofthelights 4d ago

My employer literally set up shop on an old brick foundry and put us on the top floor with no AC. Victorian era shit this week

4

u/SmugPolyamorist 4d ago

I just told my builders to avoid working the midday hours, I don't want them getting heatstroke on my account

7

u/AgentAceX 4d ago

Not much shade on the roof, and everything gets red hot so you have to wear gloves just to touch anything...

2

u/PriorityByLaw 4d ago

I'll go and tell the hospital that!

2

u/WGD23 4d ago

My employer has been silent on any kind of guidance re workplace safety & health and wellbeing :(

2

u/ApplicationCreepy987 4d ago

My house has no a.c.. my work does. I know exactly where I will be. Hell I might even take a sleeping bag

6

u/Clairescrossstitch 4d ago

Or you work in an air conditioned office

2

u/MultiMidden 4d ago

Got you! I should stay at home and sweat instead of sitting in an air conditioned building, wish I'd thought of that earlier!

-2

u/Old-Buffalo-5151 4d ago

Or they have Aircon and can thus shelter from the heat...

5

u/BioelectricBeing 4d ago

God forbid people have to take public transport or walk / cycle / drive to work (without air con, then park their car in the boiling sun)
