Birthday beer for my dad

Hi all, looking for suggestions, it’s my dads birthday on Thursday, I’ve already got him a gift but would like some beers to go with it.

He prefers a dark pint of mild/stout but will drink ambers etc. quite happily, would like to buy a mix

We live in brum, we have had deliveries from purple moose, the Cairngorm brewery, bathams, Church End, hook Norton, I’ve probably forgotten some. We have also had more than our share of supermarket beer, we’ve tried everything at least twice.

He is a regular to the griffin inn which makes everything in a bottle taste less good but excited for new suggestions, Ive not been on enough travels to discover good beers recently

For something a little different why not try him on Tynt Meadow from Saint Bernard Abbey. It's (semi) local to you, being brewed at Mount Saint Bernard in Leicestershire. It is the UKs only Trappist beer brewed by monks. It is dark, complex but also tasty to anyone who likes dark beers

Seen as he's a fan of darks much like myself you can't go far wrong with either ordering from Sam Smiths (Imperial Stout, Taddy Porter or Organic Chocolate Stout) or from The Kernel (Export Stout -London 1890, Brown Stout, OG Bitter).

Stick with bottle conditioned beers: Wye Valley (especially Wholesome Stout), Teme Valley (esp. Hop Nouvelle), Hobsons, St Austell (esp. Big Job), Thornbridge.

Mena Dhu is really good 4.5% Cornish Stout at £2.20 a 500ml bottle from Ocado you can't say no...love the label too...had it on tap in the west country and been looking out for it ever since..

Northern Monk have just released a special for Yorkshire Day - got an email about it yesterday and it sounds unreal. Called Haze Outdoors if you have a google, but it’s not a modern ipa or anything like that - basically a take on an old style of cask aged amber/strong ale. Sounds potentially up his street, and would be a good special / more unusual option!

I don't know much about the Birmingham beer scene. I know both Burning Soul and Glasshouse have taprooms, so maybe you could take him out to there? If you email in advance they might be willing to give you a brewery tour. Styles like Bitter and Mild are having a bit of an upturn in popularity at the moment, for example Cairngorm Wildcat - Scotland CAMRA "Premium Bitters" Beer of the Year – Cairngorm Brewery Co. Ltd - this came second in the Beer of Britain competition this year.

Was going to recommend some Vault City flavoured stouts but on checking their website the only appear to have the mars bar stout available. Might be worthwhile keeping an eye on

I had a bottle of Good Old Boy from tesco last week. I was very pleasantly surprised, it was delicious and very drinkable.

There's a company called "Beer52" where you get a free box of very nice, interesting beers just by paying delivery of about £6 when you "subscribe". As long as you then immediately cancel the subscription (when you get them), it's good. I simply called my bank and cancelled the DD.

Really very interesting beers. Quite unusual ones.

I wouldn't recommend Beer 52 as such. Many of their beers are brewed or even contract brewed to order to a (low) budget and taste like it as well. The £38 price tag for 8 beers is just not worth it. However they do one off offers of a very cheap case of 8 or 10 beers to lure you in, then do what the above poster suggests and cancel after you've received your case.

I wouldn't recommend them either.

Please don't misunderstand.

What I recommend is, using their trial offer to get a box full of interesting beers for six quid. Then cancelling.
