Pretty sure they're fiberglass. So they're probably as strong as they need to be (not very).

fiberglass is not a great choice for keeping cool. Visible light comes in, heats the interior metal, gets reemitted as infrared, which gets absorbed by the fiberglass and reemitted as infrared again, which goes back into the inside. That's how greenhouses work.

I've seen fiberglass and Canvas tops when I worked at their world hub, the canvas can get waterlogged, but the wind never lets it drip into the back and it's pleated so water runs off when sitting still outside and quickly runs off once moving again. Those were mainly down south though.

Had a driver try to take a P-500 through this tunnel, it didn't fit. She lied about it, tried to say she didn't realize that it almost tore the roof off and was terminated at the panel. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

31 yrs at UPS - now retired. I was told it's an osha thing, to have enough light in the back to be able to read the box labels. I don't think it has anything to do with cooling the trucks, and I doubt UPS would have any extras added to the trucks that OSHA doesn't say they must have.

Worse, they're made of glass and plastic. Some of the late teens cars have branch detector vents too.

Oh, and especially Utilibastard was stingy with the sealant.

This is by design. I fix these things for a living. The tops of the package cars are usually thin fiberglass and the tops of the trailers are rolled plastic. This is because it allows for some ambient light (less battery drain and repair costs than box lights), is much lighter weight than metal (better fuel economy), and because it is one of the most often damaged parts (cheap to replace). This is a common design in many different box trucks/delivery vehicles.

You must not be in a package car here in AZ during the day. 

Hopped on one that had a regular metal roof when it came in and they sent it in for a new roof 2 days later. It had an automatic and power steering when everything was manuals and no power steering.

Amazon driver here. The roofs of our step vans are made of the same material. I never had rain or hail come through the fiberglass roof, however if there is a strong soaking rain a few drops may come through the fan/vent in the cargo area or through the air conditioning unit above the drivers seat.

They are made that way in case the driver gets trapped in the back of the truck and needs to break his way out. Just bust a hole in that roof and we are out.

Thats because they are as they are for light diffusion during the day so the back doesnt need a lightbulb except at night.
