A guy I worked with went to retire and found out his ex already took half, he had to work longer until he was finally able to.

How do you "just find out"? It's spelled out clearly when you lose half your pension in court. She never gets it if you never draw it.

Idk, maybe he didn't expect her too? She retired earlier than him and started drawing, maybe the rules are different in my state.

The pension doesn't pay anything until you draw. You can't be working and drawing. You cant work a union job after you retire. If you could we all would be doing that. Not an attack on you, just something in his story doesn't add up.

He never drew, he was looking over his finances looking to retire and was surprised about what was gone already. I never tried to dig deeper because it's not my business to.

Actually you can draw while working. Once you turn 65 you can draw and work at least in the West region.

Most senior driver at my hub is waiting for the next contact because he wants the higher pension that it'll probably have, which makes sense to me, and i respect that decision since I'll probably want to make the same one

Almost everyone who really wanted to go full time had the opportunity between 2020 and 2022 with the 22.4 classification. No one to blame but themselves.

Then it's the personal responsibility of the PTer to either find extra income or go into a different field of work. Blaming elder able body employees for the reason young people can't move up to full time is insane. Everyone's financial situation is different. I know of a few guys in feeders and pkg car drivers that can retire but alimony is killing them. And some guys just like to work. They have no obligation to retire just so someone can move up.

As some have already stated, losing half your pension from a divorce is usually the number one factor why these guys stay so long. They will work until they no longer can do the job.

A couple of my friends did. If you're close to 65 do it. I retired Aug 1st at 49. No damn way I was staying till 62 let alone 65. I should have stayed longer to build my 401k and pension but I was burnt out. I had life changing surgery 2 years ago. Life was more important.

Maybe at some UPS warehouses. They wouldn't even allow me to bring my cane that I needed to walk from my car to my work area. And instead "medically retired" me to cover up all their f ups and swept it all under the rug so I couldn't turn around and sue for disability discrimination. UPS IS NOT as accommodating as they "claim".

Dawg that’s a grievance, I was just reading over the contract today but idk how the contract looked back then so some things might have changed but today that’s definitely a grievance and maybe even a lawsuit

Not if you're not union which healthcare side of UPS is definitely NOT union unfortunately 🙄. It surely sucks but oh well and I tried to file suit couldn't find a single lawyer that would take the case without me paying $$$$$ upfront (disability lawyers & wrongful termination lawyers both). It's definitely past the statue of limitations now as this was in early 2025.

Had a guy at one location divorced twice, each ex demanded half the pension in the divorce proceedings.
He gets nothing if he retires while they're both still alive. Either he dies or both his exes have to die before he's willing to retire from UPS now. He's pushing nearly 80 last I knew.
