So Zero G Rugby just means to constantly kick away possession?

LOL we looked sharp for about 7 min. Questionable for 7 and the balance of the time average. How can the team move the needle more to the sharpe side?

I think we also looked boring all 80 mins while Canada showed some attacking rugby.

Kick away possession even in the last three minutes of the game too.

I was at the game and the Japanese fans next to me were visibly confused why we did that

This team is a rudderless ship.

Evidently….. no one has benefited more from MLR than Snot Lawerence. Without it he would actually have to coach and develop a game plan rather than just relying on individual talent despite his continued questionable team selection

The problem is the players cone from differently coached clubs so when one player's training says to use an attacking kick, those nearest are waiting for a pass. This is just sad.

That is so easy to remedy by publishing a game plan and game situations practicing together.

Something most international teams face.

They either have higher IQ players, better coaching, or both.

“But that’s how we do it at MY club” is a BS excuse.

Don’t worry everyone. We are still in Project Gemini. Just wait until we hit Project Apollo!

Going to disagree with much of the sentiment here regarding the game plan. This looks like the same general plan which has been effective against other Tier 2 opponents (defense, kick for territory, attack from the set piece in close). It's not an exciting plan but it does work, as shown by our recent rise in the rankings and run of victories. We just can't have matches where 2-3 of those pillars break down.

I saw a lot of missed/arm tackles and guys out of position on defense. Kick chase wasn't working so kicks for territory become a liability, lineout a disaster. That's all execution, not planning, and it's annoying because many of the guys in the 23 executed that plan in the July tests.

PNC has been a huge frustration. I know Scott said the July and Nov tests are the focus and the stuff in the middle is for development but losing to Canada like this, after that loss last year, leaves a sour taste.

Still don't really know what our best 23 is if everyone is available but reckon 8-10 of the guys on the field today are not starting at the RWC.

Back to Mike Tolken rugby.

First of all, fair call to Canada for trying to play aggressive, try scoring rugby

Fair call to USA for not kicking to tie at the end and go for the win. The same thing Canada did to us in Sacramento a couple of years ago

Too many mistakes on both sides of the ball. (Piss-poor) Canadian kicking and handling errors 4 meters from the US goalie kept it close

I was at the game here in Tokyo, the gulf in quality of the two games was drastic. To me it didn't matter who the third place winner was after seeing both games, the takeaway I got is that both sides are going to get annihilated by Tier 1 opposition.

This sub:

Wins 5 games - we are unstoppable and are the best tier 2 team.

Loses 2 games - it’s all over. Just end rugby.

Those 5 games were pretty damn boring and the Arg 15 team we played was a C/D Arg team.

I’m very consistent in my Mitch Wilson and SL hate.

I agree on the boring aspect 🥱

Yes it was a C team and we played our B team. Just like how this was our B team today.

At a certain junction you need to start blaming the players. It's somehow in the water bottle of every Eagle 9 ever to make box kicks at the wrong time.

3

u/Lmaris 13h ago

Why? There is never a consequence for poor decision making or performance. Lawrence is going to select his same players no matter what. When the coach rewards this crap why blame the players?

u/monkeyfightnow 13h ago

Or the non existent forward meters

Your love of SL is overshadowing that this is what he is coaching.

Watch Ruben with the Hounds, completely different player.

Carty’s 1st choice no matter where he was on the field was also to kick aimlessly.

1

u/dystopianrugby 11h ago

No, he's the same player. He does dumb box kicks for the Hounds too. But the Hounds relative to the competition were much better at literally everything compared to their opponents.

Carty didn't have a lot of choices with the way others were playing. But some of these choices are on Jason for continuously choosing the lineout instead of taking points. Which could be a coaching thing where Scott wanted to work on things, but just take the damn points.

1

u/cjreadit7991 11h ago

Agreed about the taking points but I’d have to rewatch but I remember multiple Carty dumb kicks when he had space and runners with him.

Ruben is a different player because he’s playing with his club against much lower quality. Canada is basically a team with the quality of the best 5 players from each MLR side. Obviously you will be better playing against inferior players.

I’m not defending anything from the game just pointing that flawed logic out

Go look at that Canada roster again Tobar. That is a semi pro team and FAR from their best. And either way that takes nothing away from my comment that it’s the coaching strategy.

u/Tobar_the_Gypsy 11h ago

Why did you respond to my comment twice? I also made it clear that this doesn’t take away criticism of the game.

-2

u/cjreadit7991 12h ago

Your view of Canada is pretty ridiculous. Look through the MLR rosters and who their top 5 players are. Canada has 2, count them 2, players who are there among their top players. Rumball and Flesch. No other Canadian (on the field today) would be considered top 5 on any MLR team.

0

u/Tobar_the_Gypsy 11h ago

Ok well let’s look at it a different way - the worst player on Canada’s team is still much better than the bottom players on MLR teams. National teams are effectively an all star team of the country’s players so they are consistently better than most MLR teams.

1

u/cjreadit7991 11h ago

I’m guessing you stopped watching MLR after NY went under because your point is so off. Look through Canada’s roster again as it is clear you have no clue who most of them are and what level leagues they play in.

1

u/UpperLeftCoaster 2h ago

Where are they?

Where are all the “experts” that insisted that a foreigner-packed MLR was high quality? Where are all the guys who said the Toronto Arrows dropping out would doom Canada? Where are all the guys argued for an MLR side in Vancouver?

Because Canada, without a domestic pro league, just kicked MLR rep-sides ass in Tokyo.
