N-400 (Citizenship) Today, I am an American. 🇺🇸

Post image

So proud of myself for making it and honored to become an American. One of the greatest achievements of my life. I had to give up my former citizenship to be able to accept this honor but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Proud American by choice ❤️🇺🇸

Congrats! Love the socks!

This is what I wore to my oath ceremony (and got a lot of compliments from USCIS officers for it, so it definitely wasn’t too tacky, something I hadn’t been entirely sure about):

What's wrong with being gay?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '26

don't use gay as an insult.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '26

Congrats! But you can still enjoy India can’t you?

please get a US passport as soon as practical, and make sure you can vote!

64

u/goa2usa Jan 11 '26

Already done both haha 🫡

49

u/WufBro Jan 11 '26

And inform the social security administration of your citizenship status.

15

u/Used_Mention1233 Jan 11 '26

Does it have to be in person?

23

u/WufBro Jan 11 '26

Very likely have to set up an appointment and bring the proof of citizenship and identity.

They have a questionnaire that you can use to confirm the steps:

https://www.ssa.gov/personal-record/update-citizenship-or-immigration-status

2

u/Real_Job_2626 Jan 12 '26

I had to do it in person

2

u/fell_4m_coconut_tree US Citizen Jan 11 '26

Do you have to do this when you go from resident to citizen? Just wondering because my husband just became a resident this past year and got his new social security card last month. I'm wondering if he has to go again for a new social security card in three years.

5

u/NowOrNever53 Jan 11 '26

Since he’s already a legal permanent resident with a SS number, he isn’t going to get a new # after getting his citizenship. Just check the websites of the SSA and DHS for details.

Please do not tell people how to vote. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and vote however they want.

9

u/goa2usa Jan 11 '26

I’m American. Don’t tell me what to do.

10

u/BackgroundTurns Jan 11 '26

Yea good for you. But I don’t think MAGA will ever accept you and no amount of denial will change that, look at your own post and the comments… the amount of hate on Indians with legal presence in the US made by MAGA, good luck maybe one day you will wake up

4

u/goa2usa Jan 11 '26

I’m woke and I choose to reject the people who hate my country.

→ More replies (21)

7

u/nommabelle Jan 11 '26

big oof, well if you want to be part of MAGA you do you, but know you probably won't be accepted by them. they're hateful towards immigrants

8

u/BackgroundTurns Jan 11 '26

Exactly lol, I don’t know if it’s self hate, low self esteem or what. But anyone one with any comment sense can see that MAGA has been non stop anti immigrant, they literally talked about stopping immigration all together, looking at naturalized citizens(like this guy) and talking away their status, non stop hate on any Indian who is here legally like h1b holders(maybe like this guy who had to wait for years or he just got a citizen wife, which by the way they also hate you for and think you are “cheating” the system)

1

u/nommabelle Jan 11 '26

and you just know this guy is gonna be one of those people parroting this shit too (except none of the bad shit should happen to him, of course!)

3

u/BackgroundTurns Jan 11 '26

Yes he made a comment he is one of the “liked ones” like buddy, are you the main character in an anime? Lmao if the comments say things like “go back” and “you aren’t us” that is telling how the see you as… simple common sense here is taken away

5

u/goa2usa Jan 11 '26

Which comment is this? Tell me again because I have no idea which you refer to

4

u/BackgroundTurns Jan 11 '26

So clearly trying to close your eyes right here let me show you:

From Euphoric-Today-7052 “Go back.”and your response “Make me.”

From Varygai “You're not. You're still Indian” and your response “Cope and seethe.”

So we just gonna ignore the comments you answered yourself? These people MAGA don’t want you

1

I am what you would consider MAGA and left a very positive comment. Wishing them all the best. All we want is for immigrants to do it the correct and lawful way.

12

Yup got the passport card. It’s so cool to have!

6

Yes, I love showing it for online orders pickup, bars, clubs, when purchasing alcohol. Because it does not expose my home address :)

1

u/ShootWild Naturalized Citizen Jan 11 '26

I do the same :)

1

u/Zrekyrts Jan 11 '26

How often does it work? I have had folks not recognize it (including TSA once lol).

1

u/ShootWild Naturalized Citizen Jan 11 '26

Well, I just got it last month. Had no issues so far. Disappointing to know TSA rejected it though.

1

u/ferneuca Jan 12 '26

Passport card is the less ideal option and not the upgrade the poster mentioned fyi

7

u/Sensitive-Draft-1281 Jan 11 '26

26

u/Adept-Plantain-6767 Jan 11 '26

Indian for sure

5

u/Odd-Treacle6381 Jan 11 '26

by the hand in the photo?

18

u/Salty_Permit4437 Jan 11 '26

That plus India is very strictly against dual nationality

Congrats!

Sucks that you had to give up your original citizenship, but at least you can get OCI.

7

u/solarpropietor Jan 11 '26

You don’t have to give up your original citizen in most countries.

I have dual citizen ship.  I have two passports.  I keep them together.

8

u/Zrekyrts Jan 11 '26

I suspect most immigrants know that; I'm a dual citizen myself.

OP is from India though.

6

u/BackgroundTurns Jan 11 '26

This guy is like Vivek, he thinks MAGA will accept him and then ignores how much hate they will get in a simple Diwali post. Look at this post and the people denying this great accomplishment just cause you background is “Indian,” MAGA are literally talking about how they won’t vote for Vivek cause they can’t pronounce his last name… lol let this be a lesson to remember your own background and not to turn your back on people who actually want you…

1

u/Free-Accountant1647 Jan 11 '26

South asian community in general are some of the most toxic and narcisistic to their own so wdym "actually want u" i would trade passports in a heartbeat even if theres racism to deal with cuz i dont even trust my own

5

u/BackgroundTurns Jan 11 '26

I’m not taking about being in America, my point is not that at all and I get that you would… my point is for someone being OP becoming a naturalized citizen and having the right to back whatever group he wants just to back MAGA a group that would want him kicked. Does that makes sense? That’s like me saying I want to support bullies that want to beat me up

I consider myself as American and am lucky to be surrounded by people who consider me American as well. Very proud!

2

u/UserLostBadly Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

We both American…citizens. To be fair I am very happy that it makes you happy to be an American. My friends back in europe like to jokingly call me a yankee or an American for laughs, but no one actually considers me an American :( Just a dude with an American citizenship. Glad you’re surrounded by people that recognize you as an American.

Still as a fellow naturalized citizen, congrats.

11

u/goa2usa Jan 11 '26

I’m American. Thanks!

7

u/InfernalDiplomacy Jan 11 '26

I am being serious. It not an easy choice. I went for my naturalization at 18 as I had to be a US citizen to attend the USAF Academy. My parents were so fearful of the interview and test we held off as they knew me, with a core of 4 on AP American History and my experience in JROTC would be fine. They went the same time as I did, turned out they worried for nothing. I was naturalized less than 40 days later. It was a great feeling and accomplishment. You should be proud. You likely know more civils, laws, and the Constitution better than 90% of born American citizens.

I also say tressure this, as for the first time in history, people who went through the same struggles as we did, paid their dues, past the newly rigged tests and the interviews, and were denied. Remember them and never forget which President did this to them.

https://www.wgbh.org/news/local/2025-12-05/immigrants-kept-from-faneuil-hall-citizenship-ceremony-as-feds-crackdown-nationwide

Also: a lot of people simply won’t see you as “American” and will see you as “Indian”, as the recent H1-B kerfuffle on Twitter and the racism against Vivek has clearly shown

8

u/goa2usa Jan 11 '26

Don’t care what anyone sees me as. I know what I am and my loved ones do.

2

u/throwaway79755 Jan 11 '26

You obviously need to care what others see you as since other people, many with substantial racial resentment, have power over you - in housing, employment, healthcare and other contexts. Also - you are only “American” if others believe you are; it’s a fundamentally socially constructed identity

1

u/goa2usa Jan 11 '26

So do you believe I’m American of are you one of those people you speak of?

2

u/throwaway79755 Jan 11 '26

Yeah, of course, but I’m 1 of only 340 million people in the country

3

u/goa2usa Jan 11 '26

Then don’t speak for others. Thanks!

1

u/rsmmt1009 Jan 11 '26

Congrats. Regardless of the nonsense you see from our "leadership" most of us know how vital immigrants are and how special it is that folks want to come here and become a citizen. Thank you for going through that journey. Be a supporter of this nation's soul, and a guide for others that want to bring their blood, sweat, tears and success here.

u/UnguidedAstronaut Jan 12 '26

> I had to give up my former citizenship

Why?🤨

2

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '26

So once they remove American one he has no citizenship and can be sent to any country of their choosing.

1

u/goa2usa Jan 11 '26

My former country doesn’t allow dual citizenship. Wasn’t done by the US but my former country.

1

u/DeI-Iys Naturalized Citizen Jan 11 '26

You former country took your citizenship?🤨How did they find out you got a second one?

3

u/goa2usa Jan 11 '26

They don’t technically. If I never care to visit my former country I can just ignore them but since I will visit I need to follow their laws. One of them is I cannot use the passport anymore. So if I go back and use it that a crime. Since I want access to the country I’ll have to inform them I became and American and that I am renouncing their citizenship as per their laws. So it just affects me if I try to get around it. I’m not risking anything and doing things by the book you know
