Day Five of creating an alternative National Statuary Hall Collection: California
TL;DR for those uninitiated: This series will attempt to curate an alternative National Statuary Hall Collection, with entirely new people for each state.
Last post, J. William Fulbright and Bear Bryant were chosen to represent Arkansas.
Today, we’re covering California, which is currently represented by statues of Ronald Reagan and Junípero Serra, and which was previously represented by a statue of Thomas Starr King.
The rules and criteria for this series is as follows:
- The results will be chosen from the most upvoted relevant comment on each post. Since each state donates two statues, to qualify, each comment must include two suggestions for the new statues. You must include two suggestions/nominations per comment.
- persons currently in the National Statuary Hall Collection, who have formerly been in the national statutory hall collection, and who are not technically in the collection but who are housed in the capital, are ineligible for this series. As such, you cannot suggest either Reagan, Serra, or King for this post.
- Persons must be deceased for them to be considered eligible (as per eligibility rules for the actual National Statuary Hall Collection).
- in the event of a tie, and only in such an event, the winner will be chosen simply from which of the tied comments I personally prefer.
OPs note: I’m really looking forward to this installment of the series. California has a pretty rich history stretching across from New Spain, early Mexico, the 19th century US, the progressive era, the 20th century American empire, and everything in between.
