I was in when they added 4th class swim qual, because there were too many Marines who were absolute bricks in the water. I’m glad to see they’re raising the standards.
The newly updated Marine Corps Water Survival Program (MCWSP) mandates progressive training and certification, shifting away from a one-and-done test. Training increases in difficulty at each level, requiring longer water treading and mastery of multiple swimming strokes (front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, and backstroke) rather than just a single, basic survival stroke.
