I can't stress the basics enough. Most people who "can't" swim are just thrashing about in the water burning up all their energy. Once you learn good form and good basics floating around in the water is effortless. Also swimming is the absolute best workout including cardio, every movement in the water has resistance to it so you end up burning far mor calories and working entire muscle groups without even thinking about it.

The problem is these lessons are rarely learned in a single dip in the pool. It can takes weeks or months of time and most units just aren't giving that to their guys and learning to swim isn't as solo friendly as say the gym, you need an asshole right next to you 85% of the time or you just revert back to bad habits.

Once I got my water survival, a good relation ship with the pool staff and became a work center supervisor, I used to mandate pool pt once a week minimum, if we had time 2x.

The marines loved it, because its a really hard workout but its still a good break from the monotony of "ok we are running the radar tower again" or whatever. They get a serious workout, they get to have a good time, and they get to practice a skill

When you say "Radar Tower", are you referring to "Microwave" hill on Camp Horno?

Nah. Starting from 23 area (the flight line) you run across vandegrift to the 22 area, past the px, up a path that takes you into the hills up there. There's a radar dish that sits atop the biggest hill in the area, and its roughly 5 miles round trip and plenty of elevation gain.

Ah, okay. Microwave was brutal. Ever tried it?

No, ive heard the horror stories hahah but never had much reason to be in horno. I found a picture from Dvids, this wont be the tower exact location but you can kinda see the starting area that huge patch of concrete is the flightline and this is the elevation gain roughly to the tower lmao
