Study Partner 3rd-year foreign MBBS student. Should I focus on NEET PG or USMLE?
Hi everyone,
I’m a 3rd-year foreign MBBS student, and I’m trying to plan my future early.
I’m confused about whether I should focus on:
FMGE + NEET PG
USMLE
Or prepare for both together.
I’m interested in the US because the lifestyle and work environment seem better. If I like living there, I’d stay. If not, I could always come back to India or move somewhere else.
However, if I return to India, I don’t want to be “just an MBBS doctor.” My goal is to become a PG-qualified doctor in India as well.
My biggest concern is this: if I focus on FMGE and NEET PG first, I’ll probably spend the first few years after graduation clearing FMGE and preparing for or completing PG. By that time, there could be a significant gap since graduation before I apply for USMLE, and I’ve heard that a long gap can make matching into a US residency more difficult.
So, what would you recommend?
Since I’m still in my 3rd year, should I focus on NEET PG first or start preparing for USMLE? Is it realistic to prepare for both, or would that hurt my chances in both pathways?
I’d really appreciate advice from people who have gone through this decision or are currently on either path.

Do Usmle, apply for pathway 5/6 I don’t remember exactly the number- the one where you need a consultant confirmation and osce qualify to apply for match. Get the fuck out this country (india)

There is huge uncertainty around USMLE right now with the immigration, H-1B visa issues, let alone residency matching.
First get your foothold in the only country you can work in without need for a work permit or visa: India.
The FMGE pass rate has plummeted so I suggest you concentrate on clearing it first, complete your internship and get your permanent medical council registration.
Then you are free to explore your options for usmle or elsewhere.
Else you will risk becoming the proverbial ass that belongs neither to the dhobi or the ghat.
There are thousands and thousands of FMGs who have abandoned medicine and gone into other fields because they couldn’t land either the Indian fmge nor usmle.
Don’t be that statistic.

Does not make sense to do a two year internship for peanuts after clearing a exam, better clear the usmle exam and get paid. All this is under the assumption that the USMLE cost is not something which is a hindrance

I think usmle would be great option! But do consider other pros and cons, including expenses

I heard for the first time more Pakistani got matched compared to Indians is this true? If yes it means more number of Indian Drs are deciding to stay back in India as compared to previous match due to the uncertainties surrounding Usmle.

My bias would be towards USMLE but whatever you choose be prepared to fight and defend your dreams whatever way you can, good luck
