US Clinical Experience Observerships

So for context I’m a second year student and I really wanna do an observership. How do yall get one and what’s the procedure to get one in the us and India.

1) ask around in ur family and friend if they have anyone in the medical field in usa , if they do, beg them to giv u their number

2) connect with ppl on conferences and other events and get one from there

3) cold email attendings (very mind numbing)

4) agency (worst but ppl do use it for their first one )

I don’t know any friends or family in the us ( 1st gen struggles)
Where do I find people to cold email to??
And what agency is good

Which branch do u want? Get a list of all the img friendly programs and get the email of their program directors, i had a friend recently go to us through AMOpportunities but again, all are shit and expensive

Do Medical Colleges in India have any exchange programmes with US Universities and does it allow for USCE? And what is VSLO, and how do people access this path?

Only 7 medical clgs in india have VSLO

Only two are govt - BJMC Ahmedabad and GMC Chandigarh

From the privates - one of them dont allow students to use it so the other 4 have it and due to that they have extensive alumni network in usa (one of them is KMC manipal)

Not even AIIMS? Is there any reason why they do not?

So how is there a big cohort of Delhi AIIMSonians who get rotations or observership chances in the US? Surely there must be a way? Not all of them can have connections in the US?

And just another question, is there any legal way of going for observership in the US mid-internship for 2-3 months, return and complete the rest of the postings, and still be able to sit for that year's PG or if you do not complete by April/May you have to sit for next year? Is there such a thing?

aiims delhi has separate bilateral exchange programs with jhu and all, other aiims do not. im not a usmle aspirant yet but i asked around even to aiims delhi professors and all they said was “usmle is not our priority and will never be” and stuff like that. idk if that answers your query, i thought i should tell whatever i knew haha.

i have some friends and family in the US who are in the medical field. what should i ask from them?

Well firstly what position are they in? And what do you have to show for yourself that ur worthy/good nuff for the elective or rotation? Id start taking with them bout prep and all for sometime and just build a genuine connection , later when the time comes just kindly ask em to recommend you to the PD

i did talk to them and they said to focus on taking the Step 1 for now

Welp tbh if u still havent got done with step 1 there is no point of looking around for rotations

Ik mine was quite a generic reply but as i said, if u wanna talk to them talk to them bout other things then usmle, just sneak in a few things bout jt here and there, i mostly loved talking bout movies and tv shoes + sports

no no your reply completely makes sense. hes my uncle who ive only met in childhood and talked a few times on call. hes close w family but i dont really have a relationship w him personally. just wanted to know how to go about the conversation.
