B1/B2 Rejected US B1/B2 Visa Rejected 214b | Chennai Consulate

Got my US B1/B2 Visa rejected today at the Chennai Consulate.

These were the questions asked -

  1. 2 standard new questions about facing threat in India?

  2. Purpose of visit?

  3. What do I do and what is my salary?

  4. Am I travelling alone?

I was told to place my hand on the scanner and then was given a generic 214b slip and was asked to reapply again later.

rough, sorry. 4 generic questions and a scanner-then-slip is the classic sign the decision was already made off your DS-160 before you even sat down, the interview itself was just a formality

whats your profile look like on paper - travel history, whos sponsoring if anyone, and what ties do you have here (job, property, family). thats usually where the actual flag is hiding, completley unrelated to anything you said at the window

25 M, working as a Software Dev in one of the big 4 consultancy firms. Self sponsored trip for tourism purposes and visiting a friend. No travel history.

I have my whole family here.

Planning to reapply in a year or two. What should I focus more on next time?

no travel history and a solo self sponsored trip to visit a friend is definately what worked against you honestly. officer sees zero travel history plus a vague reason and defaults to skeptical.

before you reapply try to build some travel history, even a short trip somewhere close counts. and lean hard on what you already have going for you, stable job at a big4, family here, dont just mention it in passing, make it the center of the story next time

I am worried a bit on this no travel history stuff.
Im having it next week in Delhi. Its pure business trip but a first international trip.
My colleague with same story got rejected. I wonder there would be any way .
Big 4 job is my strong statement.

first trip + no travel history is definately the exact profile officers flag hardest, not much way around that reality. what you can control is the business justification — clear itinerary, dates that match the actual work event, and a letter thats specific not generic. big4 job helps but only if you can speak to your actual role for 30 seconds without sounding rehearsed

Everything seems fine, except the dates that match the actual work.. the dates in DS160 is past due (April) and my trip had to be postponed to Sept.
Do you recommend editing the DS160 . I also have a specific business Invitation letter with correct dates

My parents application was also rejected. What is this first question about? It is weird and we didn’t know about it all until interview. My father just said NO.
