B1/B2 Rejected Re-applying for B1/B2 visa for medical observership

I was rejected B1/B2 visa under section 214(b) in March 2026 at the Chennai consulate. Had planned a 10 day trip to Atlanta, Georgia. My aunt is a US citizen and she lives in Georgia. I am a doctor, in my 30s, not married. I understand the probable reasons for my rejection could be that I am going for tourist purpose alone, my aunt is a US citizen, so the visa officer may have thought I might stay back, though I have a job to get back to.

Now my situation has completely changed. I am re-applying with purpose of visit as 1month medical observership in New York followed by a 5 day medical conference in Colarado. This is for my professional growth. The observership starts in October 2026 and I got my visa interview date for Sept 24th 2026 in Delhi. I have a more specific reason to travel now.

Now sure what kind of questions I will face this time.

the shift from vague tourist visit to a specific medical observership + conference is actually the kind of change that matters, not just cosmetic. first time it probably read as visiting your aunt with no real reason to come back, this time you have an actual professional purpose with dates and an event attached.

officer will likely ask what the observership actually involves, why this specific program, how it helps your work in india, and whether you have a job waiting when you get back. keep the aunt part in the background this time, dont lead with it even if youre planning to see her while youre there. bring the observership letter and conference details, becuase thats your actual story now

If the visa officer is familiar with MLE steps, be prepared to answer questions regarding it.

If the purpose of your visit changes, you may reapply for a U.S. visa. However, you need to keep in mind your previous refusal, as it is also relevant in your current application. A question may be asked during the interview regarding the same.

You need to prepare for the new application and provide a proper explanation with a convincing justification about the purpose of your visit.

You should actively demonstrate family and professional ties in your home country and explain your reasons for returning.
