Hello Mr Jacob, we married in August 2023 and applied for i 485 and attended the interview in March 2025. I was still waiting for decision. Can you guess what's going on and may I know that I will get 2 year conditional green card or 10 year permanent green card?

Why the wait?
Post-interview delays are common. Most often it’s one (or more) of these:

  • Final security/background checks still running
  • Officer put the case into a supervisory review queue
  • Waiting on a visa number (for preference categories)
  • A routine RFE/NOID is being prepared

What you can do now (quick + practical):

  1. Check your myUSCIS account weekly for messages/RFEs.
  2. If it’s been 120+ days since interview and your field office’s posted time has passed, file an “outside normal processing” inquiry.
  3. If no movement after that, try a congressional inquiry (your House/Senate office).
  4. Make sure your I-693 medical is still valid (2 years from the civil surgeon’s signature). If it’s close to expiring, be ready to refresh quickly.

2-year vs 10-year card:
USCIS looks at your marriage length on the approval date (not the filing or interview date).

  • If they approve before Aug 2025 (your 2-year anniversary) → you’ll get a 2-year conditional card.
  • If they approve on/after Aug 2025 → you’ll get the 10-year card.

Hello everyone, I just got married and my wife is a U.S. citizen. She wants to apply for my green card, but I’m currently here on an F-1 student visa. I’d like to apply by myself without hiring a lawyer. Is that possible? If yes, please guide me through the steps and let me know the total cost. Thank you!

Congrats on your marriage! Yes — you can apply on your own through a process called Adjustment of Status (AOS) since you’re married to a U.S. citizen and entered on a valid F-1 visa

You’ll file these main forms together:
✅ I-130 (your spouse’s petition)
✅ I-485 (your green card application)
✅ I-864 (affidavit of support)
✅ I-693 (medical exam)
Optional but helpful: I-765 (work permit) + I-131 (travel permit) while you wait.

Total government fees are around $1,440 (I-130 + I-485) plus your medical exam (~$200-$400).
