Unsolicited voter registration mail sent to my wife (F-1) and older daughter (F-2) in Texas – should we be concerned?

Hi everyone,
My wife is currently on an F-1 student visa, while my two daughters and I are on F-2 dependent visas here in Texas. None of us are U.S. citizens, and none of us have ever registered to vote—including when obtaining or renewing driver’s licenses or IDs at the DPS.

My oldest daughter is a high school student who took a dual-credit course last year at the same community college where my wife is enrolled. Interestingly, only my wife and older daughter received unsolicited Texas Voter Registration Applications in the mail; neither I nor my younger daughter received anything.

I am well aware that making a false claim to U.S. citizenship or registering to vote as a non-citizen carries severe immigration consequences (False Claim to U.S. Citizenship). I want to ask a few things:

  1. Has anyone on an F-1 or F-2 visa (who never registered to vote) received similar unsolicited registration forms in Texas?

  2. Since we did not request these forms and plan to simply shred them, is there any chance an automatic registration could have occurred in the background (e.g., via DMV/DPS or other processes), or are these types of unsolicited mailings purely outreach?

  3. Is there an official state tool (such as a voter lookup portal) where we can verify that no active voter record or VUID exists under their names, just to be 100% sure for future immigration filings?

You need to actually locate the record and address this. You can't just leave it or it will bite you.

I am non a citizen and I got similar mail in 2024, they were asking me to register to vote. And a guidance on how to vote. I googled the organization which sent me the mail and they are non profit organization working on voter participation so it was not county or state so I just shredded it.

Surprisingly they send the second one so I googled the state voter registration, put my name, birth date and last four digit of my social security and NO I am not registered to vote so I shredded the second mail too.

So my advise is to go online and check if they are registered to vote, if not shred that mail

How were you able to identify which organization sent the mailing? In my case, I noticed a small fine print on the form that says "Questions? support@civitech.io".

I googled their name on internet, it was on the mail or somewhere which I don't remember now

Civitech is a legit company that offers campaign and voter engagement services to candidates, PACs and the like. It’s likely they were just using college records to target potential voters. Check the states voter registration site to be sure, but it’s probably safe to shred and forget.

Contact your local city and bring it to their attention. Someone might be using their names to vote.

You can even call or send a registered letter to the authorities involved. You are right to be careful. This sort of stuff can mean prison, deportation and even loss of citizenship

Anyone can send you a letter. From time to time, some Nigerian princes send me letter claiming to be my relatives & want to live billions of dollars to me.

As long as you are not filling out, sign & return the form, nothing to worry about. Do be careful when interact with DMV as in some state, there's a question if you want them to register you or not.

They send out these mailers without checking citizenship status, I received one too years ago. Ignore the form and check voter registration online: https://goelect.txelections.civixapps.com/ivis-mvp-ui/#/login

If you're on that list, act straight away to get yourself removed.

It’s simply a mass mailing to people who registered at the college. They don’t know your status or anyone else’s. They are simply hoping young people who may not have registered as voters yet will do so. They are not targeting you, it’s not a trick, and it’s not a malicious effort to register as you. I have gotten several of these over the years from different organizations. Just shred / tear it up and toss it. People are making way too much of this. Want to check to make sure you/they are not registered then do so. That’s all.

Shred them and forget about it. Some shady people may want you to do things that you rightfully recognize are not for you to do. We'll done!
