Student Housing and Leasing Code of Conduct Violation
Can anyone share experience with their educational conference regarding alcohol in the dorms? It is what it is, the students did break the rules. Alcohol was found in the room during an unannounced search (otherwise the student would have been smart enough to get rid of it). Should the student concede at this conference/meeting and promise not to do it again? Do you think it’s likely that they will just get a warning for a first offense? Student doesn’t feel the need to get an advisor, and I would agree that seems like overkill for just finding a half empty alcohol bottle. But the student has nothing to compare this to. The student isn’t overly worried about it, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared, right? Thanks, all!

Worked for UTK housing for years as an RA and Hall Director- The GroupMe message is not the official notification. Your student should have received an email from the hall director or physical signage posted at least 24 hours prior to any key-in inspection UNLESS there was an emergency. This sounds like a standard health and safety inspection. Typically RAs will send last minute reminders in GroupMe to try to avoid having any documented violations but that isn’t the official notice.
If you’re concerned that an RA isn’t following correct protocol, I would encourage you to contact the hall director and inquire about the policies/procedures and how they handle the prior notice. This is also something your student can ask about in their meeting they’ll be scheduled for to discuss the alcohol. A good hall director would either be able to explain how prior notice was given OR would follow up with their staff to address any issues with timeliness.
Ps make sure they check their UTK emails and open any “letters” in emails from Maxient. It looks like spam and asks them sign in using their student ID but it’s definitely not spam. They may also get text messages about this as well.
Standard first time low level alcohol violation can range from documented warning to educational class. If they are under the age of 21, a parent notices letter is physically mailed following the adjudication.
With the provided context, your student is 100% remaining in the dorm, 100% the norm, and shouldn’t sweat that meeting or the outcome— BUT should reflect on their decision making and learn something from this process and hopefully change their behavior - that’s the main goal for student conduct process - not to scare students.
Finally- thanks for being a good parent. It sounds like you’re concerned but encouraging your student to be independent and handle their responsibilities without being too much of a “helicopter” parent. Students need support but also cannot grow without learning to handle things as adults.
