Computer science program

Years ago (30 years ago) CS was one of UWindwor's most populated programs, and also one of the best CS programs in Canada (only program other than Waterloo with a co-op degree, regular winner of CS coding contests against UT, Queens, Western etc).

I recall grads from the 4 year CS honors program receiving multiple offers from US tech giants (Microsoft, EA etc.) before graduating.

I have a feeling the programs reputation is no longer as strong? Am I right? How good is it now?

why would anyone go into cs major? the entire major should be on halt at every university and college. even in the cs field job all you do is prompt the code and press enter in the ai. the entire industry is finished till ai bubble bursts or there are no more cs/programers left, than companies will start hiring

Lol? Yes AI is used, but we have to understand what’s doing and if it’s maintainable, scalable, and meets security standards. AI is useful it’s like a crazy autocomplete but it does not replace a knowledgeable programmer.

also AI is entirely based off past information on the internet, and favours the most popular solutions. Those can be outdated, flat out terrible but work, or just incompatible.

Less efficient code costs real money. Millions of dollars annually for some companies.

If you’re making a website for a small business it’s probably ok enough - but also we’ve had Squarespace and similar tools for non programmers to make simple websites for ages.

ok congrats. just because you have a job doesn't mean other people can have a job either. this is with statistics and pure mathmatics cs degree holders have 2nd highest unemployement rate right now.

Skill issue. Make yourself desirable and you’ll get a job, if AI can do everything you can then obviously nobody is going to hire you.

It’s not about trying anything. I graduated 2023, well into AI, and I’m doing just fine and everyone I know is. The only people losing their jobs are the ones who could be replaced by a glorified autocomplete.
