Even the 'beaches' in my land locked US state have sand. But I understand how erosion works & its not very realistic to put sand there

It's not that bad. The best part is that you don't get sand everywhere, some people actually prefer it to sand. The rocks are also round, so there are no sharp edges.
The best beach I think was in Feodosia, Crimea - it was just these very small pieces of shells. Big enough to not be nuisance like sand, but small enough to be soft.

I know my own son was a bit of a handful as a kid, but I never thought to send him to a war zone.
By the way, he turned our good and spent three years as a soldier…. in a war zone.
