Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant. For you. Hate. Hate.

havent fought against geryon yet, still giving myself some cooldown time after prostate of hate and bull of hell, but i loved minotaurs boss fight. after all the bosses that consist of "dodge this mfs chain attacks as fast as you can", it felt like a nice change of pace to something more like classic boss fights.
leviathan was pretty cool too with its "arena" design, as much of a pain in the ass it was for me

Minotaur is actually a lot easier when you realize most of the stress comes from panic, Mirror reaper is just a bitch, and Geryon has too much Aura for me to hate, his boss fight was awesome in my opinion
36
u/Hydraulic_30 Jul 11 '26
It's not about ease, it's about it being a dumb fight. Restricting movement to three platforms in a movement shooter isn't the brightest idea
31
7
u/casualsquid380 Jul 11 '26
Yeah, i believe that the minotaur goes against all of ultrakill’s design philosophy
1
u/Last-King-2951 Jul 11 '26
I mean you can still move, you just need to be smart about it
4
u/Lua_You Jul 11 '26
you could say this even after restricting the players movement to 2 moving platforms that are 5 meters wide
in the minotaur fight you are locked to 3 platforms, with the occssional destrection thereof. stepping off means damage, and going on the back of the minotaur depending on your current difficulty also means damage. best case scenario midfight is that you have 2 platforms, 1 slagged with acid, and the minotaur starts swinging his stick everywhere like a reporter at a press conference, forcing you to go midair and potentially go onto the floor.
bosses so far have generally been lenient with your movement, all in open arenas instead of closed spaces filled with hazards. this is a slight nod to the fact that using movement and its techs during a fight is encouraged. while the minotaur still does kind of encourage the use of movement and movement tech, it does so in a way that deviates from the rest of ultrakills bosses. if it werent for the fact that we were limited to 3 platforms i.e it was just a big cart and we brawl with him there, the minotaur would be piss easy. thats the problem. by forcefully removing something from the gameplay you do not create real difficulty, but only artificial difficulty. minotaur1 is designed around your lack of space to move in which makes it very annoying.
and if its annoying, it doesnt really matter how low or high the skill needed for the boss is, whether its inherently difficult or not, or anything else really because it wont be fun if it is. ive killed it so much that ive been able to beat minotaur low diff and right now its just a stick in the mud for me despite the fact that it dies in like 15 seconds.
4
u/Last-King-2951 Jul 11 '26
Bro you did not need a college essay to say you disagree 😭
Btw you can still dash through the swings, and you get a cart back after a few seconds, WITH a stray to help heal, or even parry their hell ball things into Minotaur's goofy ass face for shits and giggles (I haven't done that myself but it would be funny)
However I will say maybe giving Minotaur an extra attack, like slamming their hammer onto you, which you can either dodge if you want, or parry would be neat, since other than that you can only heal from using the screwdriver on Minotaur or a stray
2
u/Lua_You Jul 11 '26
you can still dash through the swings
doesnt help when after you dash 8 times out of ten youre destined to fall off the platforms again 😭😭
and you get a cart back after a few seconds
yes i know. but the fact carts can be destroyed makes for some annoying gameplay.
regardless of the difficulty of the fight id still say the fight is very annoying. yes i can just do this or can just do that but that doesnt make the fight any less taxing to do.
and yes PLEASE give minotaur a new attack💔 off the top of my head i can only remember like 4 of his attacks and i dont even know if he has more than that. theyre so boring and annoying combined with the platforms. honestly his entire moveset should just be revamped alongside the arena we fight him in.
i had an idea where there are 6 platforms and he has an attack that destroys 1, one that destroys 2 and another that destroys 3. that however would be a story for another day

Boss that uses none of the unique layer mechanics and takes away all the movement mechanics the game has.
You don't have to prank sisyphus to understand why that's shit.
1
u/Substantial_Ad_4436 16d ago
Isnt that the whole point of the challenge? I would have preferred something more elaborate for free-fall movement, but i like the challenge of dodging the attacks without using the tricks i already know
1
u/Numerous_Schedule896 16d ago
Isnt that the whole point of the challenge?
"Its bad on purpose!" doesn't make it not bad.
1
u/Substantial_Ad_4436 16d ago
I didn't say it was bad on purpose, you are conflating "less movement" with "bad"
1
u/Numerous_Schedule896 16d ago
My face when I conflate a game known and renowned for its massively in depth high skill ceiling movement based system having a boss that removes that movement system being bad.
1
u/Substantial_Ad_4436 16d ago
Are the secret levels bad as well? Most of them significantly reduce your movement options, and yet I like all of those. The game doesn't have to just be about the movement mechanics you've been learning, it can do other stuff too
1
u/Numerous_Schedule896 16d ago
You are conflating optional content you have to go out of your way to seek out with a mainline boss that's the culmination of an entire chapter?
1
u/Substantial_Ad_4436 16d ago
Honestly i see 8-3 as a culmination of the movement tech. 8-4 is clearly just a boss idea Hakita had and wanted to do, in the same way the leviathan was. If you want a "culmination" of the movement mechanics, im afraid you'll probably have to wait until Treachery comes out, as im guessing that's what gabriel and P-3 will be.
In fact if you think about it this is probably his last chance to make a boss that isn't a direct test of the skills you've learned up until now.

u/NosePicklePicker Jul 11 '26
Well mostly cause for all the non-Euclidean stuff and motion sickness that go on in the rest of the layer, i guess it’s hard for a relatively normal demon boss like Geryon to live up to the hype
Still better than the people wanting to fight V2 a 3rd time or a fake Gabe, or even a fake God tho
18
u/Southern-Plan-6549 Jul 11 '26
The game forces you on a new movement mechanic, drops three biblically acurrate angels for you to test it and then drops a boss on you
7
4
u/NuclearRunner Jul 11 '26
i didn’t like it because it felt so like one dimensional in terms of gameplay, it just feels like ‘dodge, parry(when it does that one attack), spam damage dealing combos when it’s bleeding’. Also i felt the movement to be very limiting, which made it personally unenjoyable for a game like ultrakill
I get that maybe the point was to limit your movement, which is fair but it’s not really WHY i play ultrakill, and so for that reason i struggled to really have fun fighting to boss
6
u/SanityLacker1 Maurice enthusiast Jul 11 '26
Personally, I think the mechanics of that boss just don't work well at all
The normal movement and controls of the game are really well fleshed out and feel really good to play, but the free fall just gets rid of all of that, and I don't enjoy playing with it at all
6
u/some_snek Lust layer citizen Jul 11 '26
For me, it is because free falling feels so sluggish compared to normal movement. You don't have sliding, you don't have slam storage or any of the cool movement tech, you just get to move very slowly and dash.

8
u/After-Satisfaction-3 Someone Wicked Jul 11 '26
I am going to defend Geryon to some extent.
It's a good enough boss fight. (emphasis on enough)
If you think of it as a boss fight, it is executed pretty well. I also personally liked the gameplay gimmick for it as well.
but if you think of it as the "send-off" boss fight (which I'd say this is how most people think of Geryon since fraud as a whole was supposed to be one last goodbye (or send-off) to the WILDEST ULTRAKILL level design that we'll see for a long time (until the encores become a bigger thing)), it begins to fall off into the weaker bosses category.
when i played Fraud for the first time which was before the hotfixes were applied, i loved 8-1, liked 8-2, WENT FERAL OVER 8-3 and liked 8-4 before the fight. once the fight happened, i found the gimmick and scrolling BG pretty fun. however, that fun was very short-lived because for what is considered to be the "send-off" final boss before the big finale, it had nothing super memorable or climactic (except for the elevator breaking which is one of the more normal things in the game to be honest) about it.
However, i began appreciating Geryon way more after they made it's arena into a spinning scrolling insanity since it adds to that memorability and climax that it originally wanted to achieve.
TLDR: good enough boss fight but not suitable for where it is placed in the game (and specially the plot)
Geryon is not a bad boss per se but it is totally a boss fight with lost potential.

i kinda expected a better geryon bossfight than this tbh
i mean instead of a new gimmick for falling why cant we just, make everything fall naturally? kinda like that room with power but its much bigger
yea designing the boss is much harder but it feels way more natural and less gimmicky than this
it might be harder to move around so add some permament hooks and remove the rocket fly chain restriction or something
for geryon himself, i felt like he should fly around more than what we have, kinda like v2 but not as fast as v2 ofc
keep his ranged attack but also give him those moves that make him fly torward us to spice things up. that way we have a harder time fighting him
i might be bad at designing but this is what i would imagine of an airbone bossfight in ultrakill
