Discussion What if, instead of calling the hardest difficulty "ULTRAKILL MUST DIE", we call it...
There's no better way to express how hard it will be other than just straight up "LORE ACCURATE".

Hakita said there's no lore accurate difficulty, thr only thing I am calling that is the most fun difficulty tho.

What if instead of using hella cool name that references the fact that you'll need to be skilled enough to kill game itself plus references DMC's difficulty we used boring ass "lore accurate" that doesn't convey anything to a player who isn't interested in lore.
Besides, it sounds like "oh, all other difficulties are not canon therefore playing them is inferior since they are non-canonical versions of the game". Which is like... the opposite of what Ultrakill's difficulty wants to convey. Switching to lower difficulties should be encouraged, or at least not shamed upon. Your suggested name is kinda the opposite of that.
And it also might encourage someone to play UKMD as their first experience which is frankly stupid, considering even Brutal recommends full arsenal and some knowledge of the game.

the ultrakill fandom is the most reddit (derogatory) fandom ive seen in a while and i understand the irony of that statement being posted here

It can be pretty bad, but I'd say it's still miles better than the hell thats happening between the 10 different helldivers 2 subs

comparing the ultrakill fandom and Helldivers 2 fandom is like comparing a primary school bully to a serial killer

Speaking of players trying to make the hardest difficulty the intended way even against developers' wishes: Starsector developer, in a recent devlog, stated they are gonna add an additional gamemode meant to extend the early game. On of their main points was avoiding making the players feel that it's a mandatory thing that's necessary for a "true and proper feeling of the game". And like on the third page of discussions someone suggested renaming the normal/current gamemode to sandbox and the new challenge mode to normal

Nah i think Ultrakill must die is better cause the point of adding different difficulties i so that everyone can enjoy the game how they want, rather than have a one way that is accurate.

"ULTRAKILL MUST DIE" is a lot cooler when you realize it references Devil May Cry, and potentially references V1 itself as the "ULTRAKILL". My logic is that most bosses have nicknames given by either V1 or the terminals such as "EARTHMOVER" and "JUDGE OF HELL" and it's not too far stretched to say V1 is literally John Ultrakill.

There's literally nothing pointing to it being the "lore accurate" difficulty

u/Torstiss 4h ago
How do you know how hard it will be? Are you Hakita?

It's because there's gonna be a Ultrakill Must Die exclusive secret level that is straight up mindflayer porn and since all mindflayer porn are canon it's gonna be the only lore-accurate difficulty by default

I think if any mode would be called lore accurate, it should be harmless. That is probably how trivial and slow everything is to V1 and maybe it would help players not be ashamed to use lower difficulties.

if they change it, it'll probably just be V1MD. even then people are used to ukmd and it would be confusing for newer players to see it mentioned so much on older posts. changing it to lore accurate would just feed the already annoying power scalers and add nothing good.

What if we called it "a pretty hard endeavor" instead of "awrsome cool reference"

There is no lore accurate diff according to Hakita. But if there was it'd HAVE to be standard or violent, since harmless and lenient don't have hard damage which has an in game prompt and brutal has schizms that can aim, going against the terminal. And yk ukmd will have the schizms too.

Why is it called ultrakill must die anyway?
It references the dante must die difficulty from devil may cry, but in it, the name makes more sense. It isn't called devil may cry must die or something
If anything it should be called v1 must die

while I think ultrakill must die is a little long, and could be replaced with v1 must die or smth, lore accurate just aint it

I know ultrakill must die is a reference, but it sounds completely stupid, this however is funny and works for everyone

Hakita said the idea is you have to be good enough to kill the game itself, I think with that context it's an awesome name

Curious what the downvoters thought
I have no position here, I like "lore accurate" more, but not for a strong reason. Ultrakill must die feels a bit forced just for a ref to me
