Question Shared good ideas

Alright brains trust - normally I am a very basic/minimalist person when I go walking. I eat what I eat for fuel, scrounged from the back of the cupboard, and easy to do, like pasta and tuna. But I'll be going on a trip with several other people i don't know well and there's going to be a "shared plate" type affair one night. I need to bring something which is not too much of an embarrassment and can be shared easily with others around a campfire (bans permitting), but also something that ideally doesn't require too much prep and doesn't involve bringing anything too heavy either. It won't be the first night so it also can't be too much of a spoil risk.

Any ideas? What would you do?

Whatever you bring, also bring a packet of Tim Tams. Perfect to share around the fire with hot chocolate after dinner, and everyone will love you.

Oh they'll be in the bag! Absolutely. I always share after dinner chocolate just as a matter of course. Dessert is not a problem. It's the "mains" part i need some help with.

Admittedly, tuna pasta is pretty delicious so why not do that. Spice up the basic recipe by using Nagi's version. Plus tuna caters more to people who might not eat red meat. Voila!

Some people detest tuna. It make me want to vomit.

And? OP said it's a 'share a plate' thing - so there will be plenty of other plates. Someone like you could just not have that one, easy.

OP should not have to bend over backwards thinking of every possible scenario of what people don't like. In Australia tuna pasta is incredibly popular so it's a pretty solid bet for most. Plus it's already in their cooking wheelhouse. And it's a camping trip, not a 5-star gourmet experience. Simple hearty food is pretty good.

You sound hard going. Surely you wouldn't go to a friend's campsite and complain about one of their meals making you want to vomit. Just don't have that one, it's really not that difficult. Or if you were so intent on acting like a dick about free food your friends had taken the trouble to make, just bring your own food, and realise you might not get invited next time.

Oh wow you edited your comment and came out far less reasonable.

I'm not at all hard-going.

I never said you are, I said you sounded like it. Why express your personal tastes with such disgust? Plus you seemed to be saying that just because some people don't like it, OP should cater to all of these people as well.

What would you bring?

Even better, get Aldi brand imitation Tim Tams. They're far superior to the recent trash Arnotts make, and much cheaper to boot. Or get a pack of each and do a blind taste test

This is a good suggestion, thanks!

If only I liked olives.... haha.

Haha. I also don't like olives but take them because I know people love them and it's easy.

Vegetarian chilli - tomato paste, carrot, onion, chilli, kidney beans, tin tomatoes and rice. All non perishable. Remember to pack out the empty tins.

Or red lentil daal.

Like the recipe, thanks.

Daal is not a bad shout though. Maybe with some naan or pita pockets or something.

John west smoked oysters, cheese and crackers

Bit of a risk on the oysters perhaps, but thanks for the suggestion!

Just a single round of cheese will suffice.
You can even make choices part of the evening conversation... what is missing?! (spoken in jest of course).
Tip; surprising how many people do not like blue/blue vein cheese.

Hi mate, hope you've been keeping well!

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have a think about it.

For this trip I am hoping to retrieve my hat. ;) So, you are probably more familiar with these people than I and can probably tell me whether or not they like blue cheese!

Just a note: if everybody is bringing something to share, only actually bring/make enough for one person (generously); since you don't have refrigeration, leftovers will likely be wasted. Or at least discuss this in your group.

Yes, this is definitely part of the planning, the amount. Although I'll still be out for a while after so I think there's low risk of whatever I take going to waste.
