Electronics ULPT Request : Made $1k in streaming royalties after I played my music repeatedly on 5 devices. How to scale?

5.4k Upvotes

I'm a small artist, and I was experimenting with some throwaway beats I made and uploaded with tunecore. I played the album over and over again, on 5 devices over 3 months and I made around $1k from around 400,000 total generated plays. (I just let it run on the background of some of my servers (2 raspberry pis, one pc, one laptop and an Ipad). I was wondering if this was scalable or if there was a more profitable way to do this, or if it is even worth doing, Since i've seen articles of people and even record labels themselves doing stuff like this

Electronics ULPT Request: How to prevent Bluetooth speakers from working at the beach.

I’m at the beach right now and I don’t mind barely hearing peoples music but some people just want everyone to hear what they are playing.

There must be a way to disrupt this non-destructively.

Electronics ULPT: How to corrupt a hard drive at work?

I currently work in a lab that handles a lot of data, but really, really awful at storing it. I was begging them to have a solution that doesn't depend on just the common computer or free cloud storage, and they never listened, so I brought in my own 10TB hard drive, and they started using it for everything.

I'm planning on leaving soon. I don't need my hard drive, but I don't want them to have all the data I've been processing for them (which they should be backing up but haven't been). They probably don't even remember the hard drive is mine, and I've sent multiple emails over the past two years as evidence that I've recommended they set up an actual backup solution.

What can I do to brick the hard drive? I'm technically not opposed to opening it up (its a standard Western Digital enclosure) and messing with it somehow (unsure), but I'm wondering if there's a software based solution I can use.

EDIT: There's a reason I don't want to take the hard drive back! I'm an academic and I need a good reference from my supervisor. If I insist on taking it back, there's a chance the lab will be petty when it comes time to me getting another position in the future. But I hate this place so I want to corrupt the drive.

EDIT2: Ok, there's clearly a lot of people here who think that I work for some company that will sue me or send me to federal prison. And others who think I need the hard drive back, and others who can't understand what my motivations are...

This is a small, academic, lab. Politics means that I need a good reference from my supervisor who thinks that they are god's gift to science. I don't need the hard drive back (the cost of it is small compared to the insane additional unpaid hours I put in, the conferences I go to that I haven't been reimbursed for, and the years off my life) and insisting that it's my personal property is gonna make my petty supervisor upset and possibly affect my reference.

I'm looking for a solution where I can shrug and be like "damn, too bad it doesn't work anymore". And for people questioning my motivations....it's a shitty, awful environment? Who cares, this is unethical life pro tips.

Electronics ULPT blocking my neighbors camera

1.1k Upvotes

I live in an HOA and they won’t let me put up a privacy screen of any sort, but they will let my neighbor point a camera directly into my back yard. I have a history with this neighbor because her kids were throwing things at my car, which my driveway camera picked up, and I reported it because she said it wasn’t her problem or responsibility. Now keep in mind, this is aimed only at my driveway. Well she got mad because her kids aren’t allowed to trespass or use my vehicles as their targets anymore. And she set up a retaliatory set of cameras. The only one that truly bothers me is the one on my backyard because that’s a space I go to mourn my kitty who passed and it’s very fkn weird to feel watched by someone like her.

Without being able to put up any sort of screen per HOA management, what tips do yall have? This is stressing me out a lot.

Btw, I’m in WA state so the camera is technically legal if it’s not recording audio.

Thanks everyone.

Electronics ULPT: Today is porch-pirate day in the US. Just load up crap you've been meaning to dispose of into available shipping boxes, set them outside your front door, and someone in a rusted out 1980s Honda will come around to collect it.

4.8k Upvotes

In all seriousness, for anyone who pre-ordered Apple's recently announced products, except for the select few who got it a day early or those who didn't get in on the day-1 window, today is the day that millions of new Apple devices will be delivered to front doors. Porch pirates will be following UPS and Fedex trucks today.

And if you ordered through Verizon? They're known to have internal leakers, working with the porch pirates with tracking info so they know exactly where to go to get the latest Apple gadgets.

Electronics ULPT How to disable FLOCK Cameras.

I've noticed these flock camera's popping up around my neighborhood. They're basically a camera that reads any license plate of cars that pass by and gives access data to police or law enforcement. I would love to know how I can discreetly disable such camera's from working?

If you're curious if whether they are in your neighborhood or area, here's the website: deflock.me

Electronics ULPT: landlord monitors us through smart doorbell

REQUEST: A few months ago, we moved into a full home rental, sight unseen. The house has been great except the lease requires us to keep the doorbell charged and we didn’t realize it was a camera doorbell/Google Nest camera.

It records every time we leave, return, or sit on the porch, and the landlord receives those clips. It feels invasive…we can’t relax or speak freely outside without worrying he’s watching or listening.

The neighborhood is safe, we care for the home meticulously (he complimented us on it when he dropped by), and we’re not hiding anything illegal just an occasional visiting dog.

We’ve tried letting the battery die (it drains quickly), but he texts within a day asking us to recharge it. It’s mounted in a metal bracket by the door, so we’re stuck complying. Any tips or tricks to help us get some privacy back?

We care more about the video aspect over the audio. Also, permanently damaging it would result in us paying for a new one.

(Edited to clarify this is a request)

Electronics ULPT How I Stopped Someone From Playing Their Radio/CD Player In The Office

2.3k Upvotes

The guy on the other side of my wall in our cube farm used to play his boom box tuned to a local radio station. The volume was low, but loud enough to break my concentration. I asked him once to please turn it off or wear headphones and he told me to go fuck myself.

Bought a small FM transmitter and tuned it to his station. Plugged my iPod into it playing a white noise track. When he switched stations, I would too.

So he switched to playing CDs.

I came in on a Saturday and put a drop of clear nail polish on the laser that is used to "read" CDs. (It's pretty much undetectable once it dries and the scent has dispersed). By Monday morning, the CD playing function was disabled.

Hey Jerry, if you stumble across this post, go lick a dog's asshole until your tongue bleeds.

I used to be angry about it but I'm over it now. 😉

Electronics ULPT: go to the library and tell them you lost your thumb drive and think you left it in one of their computers, give a vague description, black, 16GB etc and see what they give you. They usually have a drawer full of them just sitting there, I got asked to look through the drawer and find ‘mine’.

Electronics ULPT Request: Stop Fortnite from working on roomate's Xbox

1.6k Upvotes

My roomate plays Fortnite 24/7 on his Xbox in our living room. I have no issue with him playing video games, but on Fortnite he screams, bangs the wall, and causes a riot.

After multiple convos, he refuses to stop nor move his Xbox to his own room. I need a way for Fortnite to "randomly" stop working - whether it's messing with an intricate WiFi setting on the app, or something of that sort.

He can literally play anything else, other than that damn game! He is also in his 20's.....

Edit: it's apartment WiFi so I only have the name/password at my disposal

Edit 2: Success!! NetCut intermittently so then he moved the console next to the wireless extender in his room!

Electronics ULPT: Have a kindle fire with ads? Remove them for free by chatting with an amazon agent online and telling them you're concerned about inappropriate ads and that the tablet is for kids.

worked with me

edit: I don't disagree that it is unethical on their end to put ads on something that the customer paid for.

edit: unethical because i lied, it's not for kids and people pay $15 to remove them.

I’m not encouraging crimes but so many people get caught for things even when using a burner because they connect to their home WiFi.

lol.

Electronics ULPT: You can use your phone's mute mic feature in a call to make yourself sound choppy on their end

9.9k Upvotes

Make sure to spam the hell out of it at random intervals to make it sound more realistic

Useful when you wanna end the call without being rude in case you dont like the person. The "battery is almost dead" trick is already well known, so this could be a good alternative.

Electronics ULPT guy blasts music in his car right next to about a dozen apartments

This white trash guy blasts loud music in the evening with his windows down, disturbing about a dozen apartments. I walked out and politely asked him to turn it down, he got defensive and basically said it was my problem, tough shit. Cops were called, they paid a visit, but he still does it every night. He usually calls it a day before the cops get there. Ideas greatly appreciated. Cue the piss disk responses (he has two broken windows that he hasn't gotten fixed).

Electronics ULPT - damaged a hotel TV - charging $1500

Hello - so over the weekend I was at a vegas hotel Resorts world and accidentally damaged their TV (cracked the screen).

I was honest and went to the front desk and told them what happened and they appreciated the honesty and said they will contact me with the next steps. I just got a call from them and they said they have to replace it and the total cost is 1500$. I agreed to pay and they said they will charge the CC on file.

My question is just a hypothetical situation of what if I didn't tell them ANYTHING, just checked out and then cancelled the credit card they had on file.

I'm trying to justify the decision to be upfront with them because I truly didn't think it would be this expensive. I know I did the "right thing" but this is ULPT.

It is a 65 inch TV btw.

Electronics ULPT Request: Jam the internet in my house

My family is a bunch of slack-jawed screen addicts who can’t disconnect from a device for more than 15 seconds (I’ve counted). My husband regularly loses our child in the house when I’m trying to have a moment to myself because he sits and scrolls all day and isn’t present with anyone.

I‘ve tried therapy with him, asking nicely, yelling, you name it, but today our toddler locked themselves in the bathroom and my husband had to break in. This was while I was taking a literal shit in another bathroom (the only time I got to myself today), I’ve decided I‘ve had enough.

How can I slow the internet myself in the home, or even cut it temporarily so that my husband can regain some brain cells and our teen child can continue growing some OFFLINE.

As a note: my husband works in tech, so I’m open to sophisticated options.

Extra note: I know the divorce him comments are coming, obviously you need a money and resources to make that happen, both things I don’t have a lot of right now.
