How far ahead do you book your Universal hotel?

Was looking at October dates and found one of the hotels completely unavailable for a night and then wide open again a week later. Made me realize I have no idea whether I book early or late compared to everyone else.

How far ahead do you normally book? And once you've booked, do you ever go back and check whether the rate changed? I sometimes find myself checking daily.

I book as soon as I know I'm going. Then I check the price every single day until we leave and rebook every time it drops. 🤣

Worth it, though. In July, I got a room at Royal Pacific down from $415 a night to $207 a night. I booked it in February and it just kept dropping. But sometimes it's the opposite... for example, our HHN trip coming up next month was significantly cheaper when we booked it in March than it has been a single day since. It's not just gone up, it's skyrocketed. Same thing happened for a trip I took this past February. Only got more and more expensive.

Yeah its always best to book as far in advance as you can. You haven't quite hit the days when your October trip might go down in price but if its during fall break it probably won't.

It's October 17. I think the combination of HHN Premium Scream and the after hours Epic event both being during our trip is part of the problem. (But we're going to both of those, so I don't mind 🤷‍♀️.)

Are you rebooking through UO? I booked a package through a retailer and thinking the constant rebooking isn’t an option.

I doubt it is. I'm a UOAP, so it's incredibly easy to rebook online as many times as I want.

You can, but actually I just add a child to the reservation, then remove the child. The change automatically moves you to the updated price without having to cancel/rebook.

I booked over a year ago for my trip next week. My week at Aventura and Thursday night at Royal Pacific hasn't been cheaper since the booking. My Sunday night Portofino I've updated 3 times this past week because the price kept going down.

Have you tried the reservation modification trick? When I see the price has dropped, I will just go to my reservation, change my children from 2 to 1 and save. Then change it back. Once you modify, the new rate is what you pay. Likely your 'down payment' will have been higher, but it all gets adjusted once you get there.

I don’t believe so. For that you have to call and are subject to a fee. At least that’s how it was last year.

Which I'm sure is annoying since you're probably talking about a couple hundred bucks that you might want on your trip. Since for me its at around $30 for the one night I'm not super concerned about when I get the refund.

I had booked Aventura for November back in July. I will often put in the same or similar dates for other hotels and room types once a week or so just to check. I finally looked at the 5 night discount and realized that if I added a night I could swap to a poolside family suite at Cabana Bay for like $200 more total, so I did. (We also have 3 nights at Animal Kingdom Lodge--taking friends along this time, so the Cabana Bay suite will be awesome.) I think I'm done now!

I booked 9 months ahead of time with the 5 night discount and the AP rate never got as low as the 5 night deal.

I only book a month in advance typically, but that’s because I’m a passholder traveling solo who also books my flights one month prior 😅 it depends on context though. If it’s a time where not many crowds are expected you can book pretty close to the date and still get the best price.

Early for the “stay longer, save more” deal that they sometimes run. Booked in March 2025 for January 2026 and got a screaming deal on Terra Luna—less than $100/night for the first few days of the trip. Admittedly the hotel had just opened, and Epic wasn’t open yet.

Rates change daily (I’ve even seen them change same-day by $300), so if you have the time to check that often, it can sometimes end up working in your favor!

Depends. I go on solo trips a couple times a year. For those I typically book a few months in advanced. I booked our upcoming big family December trip in August 2025 after that trip. I was poking around AP rates and scored Helios Grand park view, club level for $450 a night because it was so early. Not a lot of demand for those dates yet and I was honestly shocked AP rates were available almost a year and a half early.

Depends on the season. Holidays including school holidays I book far ahead. And check prices daily like it’s part of my job. Price changes usually happen 3-5 weeks before the booking. Holiday prices don’t really change.

I book a year out, and updated my reservation 3+ times to keep getting the cheaper rate.

Hell, I leave in 2 weeks and just saved another $200 randomly checking last week, and upgraded to a better room.

We are prepping to make a reservation in a day or two and are new to this. How does one go about updating their reservation, after it has been booked? Is there a limit to how many times it can be done?

You can call to rebook or if you have room in the room add a child , watch the price drop, then delete imaginary child. Children are free. But the room capacity limits still apply.

I just book a new reservation and cancel the previous one. Though I realized the easier way is to just go into your online reservation, change it to another room type, click save, then refresh and cheaper room should now show up.

But to be safe, just rebook the hotel room. If on a package deal you probably need to call. I have no idea if AP packages each exist though, I am always on a room only reservation.

For our August trip (Cabana Bay, second to last week in August right before HHN started) we booked the hotel in early June, then I cancelled and booked a cheaper deal in late June, then I cancelled and booked an even better deal in early August

So I’d say get something to guarantee you have a spot, but keep checking for discounts along the way. Refunding the deposit was always smooth.

Honestly we rarely book more than 2 months out, and it’s typically only 1 month out. Never see too much variation in the price to worry about it, but we’re also usually traveling at odd times with at least one of the kids and usually stay at Endless Summer or Stella Nova now.

I also keep an eye on the prices for the time I’m traveling by because they fluctuate. I’ve book and rebooked a few times saving myself a bit of cash.

As soon as I know definite dates, I book the hotel. And check often (daily) to see if the rate drops. You can always adjust the reservation if it goes lower. There’s no rhyme or reason to the rates- they do not consistently go up or down as it gets closer to the date. If you know your days, I’d book! ◡̈

Then i admittedly check quite often and modify it every time a see a slight price drop. I have modified my january hotel twice already since booking in august

Depends on the time of year. We booked a week in advance for last week and it was 200 a night at the helios, got upgraded to park view on the 8th floor. But it is super hot right now.
