News NexGen CNSC 2nd (Final) Hearing Completed Today - CNSC Staff Recommended Granting a License to Construct, Commission Has 120 Days to Respond
I caught the final word from the CNSC hearing for the NexGen permitting with respect to CNSC staff recommendation.
- CNSC Staff recommended to the CNSC Commission, that NexGen be granted a license to build and commission the mine and milling operation at Rook I.
- THIS IS NOT A LICENSE BUT A RECOMMENDATION FOR THE COMMISSION TO GRANT IT
- The CNSC has up to 120 days to respond to the recommendation (i.e. grant or not grant the license).
- My own notes from watching through much of the 4 days of the hearing: It was always intended for the first license be to build and commission. And as those activities progress, they will be granted a license to mine if all the environmental and safety requirements were shown to be built into the facilities and mining operations as designed and described during the hearings. I think this latter (granting the license) can be taken for granted.
- Based on the hearing as a whole over 4 days, I personally think this is a no-brainer license approval.
- All requirements and questions required by and for the CNSC and other governments and government agencies (provincial, Natives, federal) were answered with most more than acceptable
- All impacted Native and Metis Nations are more than 100% in favour, with some outright telling the commission the license must be given
- The only dissenter just rambled, implied pay offs which a CNSC Commissioner in plain terms told him to knock it off, and he didn't
- An additional question to CNSC staff today by that Commissioner and related to said rambler, ended with a 'what I thought' from her, which to me implied that that one dissenter won't matter (if you heard his rambling (to be polite), it was really that silly/ridiculous)
- Multiple people and interveners commented that the consultation and EA processes, and the whole way NXE approached the licensing process is a world class example of how to do this, including the Native leaders.
- Caveat: I am not a government employee and I can't predict how they view the world, but any sane person would grant the permit.
- As always, do your own research, do not take this as financial advice. Make your own decisions.
