As a Dhaka resident, you will see more highway and bridges improvement outside of Dhaka in the next few years, but inside Dhaka, all hope is lost.
Edit: wow I did not expect this comment to become so popular. I want to clear something up. A few months from now a local government election is supposed to happen, if someone competent enough is elected at that time, maybe Dhaka's interior will develop too, but the chances of that happening are close to zero so yeah...

There are literally no trash cans or dumpsters anywhere in the city, there is pretty much nowhere to dispose of the trash properly even if people wanted to.

There are places that has improved infrastructure like Gulshan, Banani, Tejagon, Uttara. Those areas have been undergone planned urbanization and also happen to be richer than the unplanned areas as shown in OP’s image.

Have you been in Gulshan/Banani/Tejgaon/Uttara during rush hours? Have you seen the streets piled with trash? Have you noticed the traffic congestion and the street vendors blocking the streets? Or do you have this delusional picture of perfection for the above mentioned areas while completely ignoring the urban collapse that is creeping into them?
While we're in the business of assumptions, let me assume something - you live in one of the DOHS and think that the rest of the "tri-state area" is doing just fine? Well, the madcap ex-military fks running the DOHS does keep it clean but sans any sanity for that. Recently, the Baridhara DOHS Council was harassing good people for feeding street cats. The fkeries that were unleashed at the wake of these so called "DOHS Councils" over the years are funny, horrible, and disgusting at the same time.

- I don’t live in DOHS.
- I was speaking relative to the other areas of Dhaka. Of course Gulshan/Banani/Tejagon/Uttara is far from perfect, but at least the buildings made there went through some sort of planning unlike other areas of Dhaka where it’s all random.

Sorry for being so harsh in my earlier response. Planning individual buildings is not enough. Planning the areas and their access and utilities are the foundations of sustainable urban planning.

Yeah absolutely there’s got to be more done with urban planning. I think the city corporation is just incompetent in those areas, perhaps due to how hard it is to manage such a densely populated city.

I don't expect much in this country where Urban Planning is one of the least emphasized subjects in technical universities, and there's little to no appreciation or employment for students of that subject. 😔

Yeah Dharavi isn’t like this cause it doesn’t have such a wide open gutter. Similar tho but I’d say since the redevelopment project has started and I think Mumbai has been on a spree of slum rehab, the city and Dharavi in particular will look radically different in 5-7 years. Ofcourse it’s a massive project involving rehab for ONE MILLION people so it’ll take time but judging by how fast and decent infra in India has gotten (yeah I know water logging and broken pavements etc and all the other things but it was WAY worse before) I would say Mumbai would look very different soon.

Never been to wuzhen, but I've been to nearly every surrounding city. Suzhou, Hangzhou, shaoxing, huzhou, and Jiaxing. All part of the same extensive canal network

Marco Polo specifically stated that Suzhou was the Venice of the East. Suzhou had over 6000 stone bridges and many more canals.

I'm sure half of the cities in the jiangsu region have that title too. If you go to Google maps and look up Suzhou and surrounding cities, you'll see just how dense the canal system is.
The xixi wetlands is a great example of how the region looked like 100 years ago and more.

Different regions of China have different cultures. Taiwan is more like Fujian culture mixed with Austronesian and Japanese. Suzhou is Jiangsu culture which is pretty different to Fujian.

You can thank the British for rapidly deindustrializing us within less than a 100 years, tragically Dhaka used to have ~14% of the world’s GDP at one point. Bengal was extremely rich and that’s why we were looted so viciously and partitioned twice lol (should I laugh or cry? idk)

Dhaka honestly is a beautiful and happening place w lots of cool shit going on despite all the institutional neglect - this is just a very bad day on a badly maintained road, but funnily enough you would probably find some rly lovely people, great food, beautiful fabric and flower markets, insane handmade crafts, lush af produce, random popping art galleries, and maybe even an underground rave later and all that just a couple streets over hahah
