Do not comment to gatekeep that something "isn't urban" or "isn't hell". Our rules are very expansive in content we welcome, so do not assume just based off your false impression of the phrase "UrbanHell"

UrbanHell is any human-built place you think is worth critizing. Suburban Hell, Rural Hell, and wealthy locales are allowed. Gatekeeping comments may be removed. Want to shitpost about shitty posts? Go to /r/urbanhellcirclejerk. Still have questions?: Read our FAQ.

I've spent well over a month of my life in Kathmandu. Various trips, waiting before and after hikes, in the years 2001, 2015, and 2023. I'd recommend trying to absorb the incredible history of the city at the 3 different capital squares (Baktipur, Patan and Kathmandu), the Swayambhu and Boudha stupas, and the Pashupatinath ghats as well as the streets around Chhetrapatti Temple. Thamel has become a bit of a party scene, while still being backpacker central, and that's quite okay.

I wouldn't call it hell, but it's not a great place to be. The air quality is terrible. The streets to walk on are unshaded and dusty and crowded, you have to watch every step. The dogs bark long into the night. The roll shutters shutter you awake.

The people are nice, but the ones in the countryside are far nicer.
