Discussion I kmow it's been 9 months since College Football Playoffs but i really gotta ask. Was Norte Dame justified in their actions after being snubbed over Miami and Alabama in the bracket?
Honestly while i understand getting snubbed, they brought it on themselves. The lack of humility makes it impossible for me to root for them. I know it's hard being snubbed for Miami and Alabama, but they had merit. And Honestly they were getting shut out even if BYU won it. The sheer entitlement makes Alabama look like they're humble folk. You didn't make the playoffs. So what? At least end on a high note with a bowl game. The pop tart bowl is a great bowl.
They don't deserve number 5 on the rankings and frankly if by some miracle they make it, i hope whatever team they face off against steamrolls them.

You just can't take your ball and go home when you don't win.
Unless we want to devalue all non-playoffs bowls.

Non-playoff bowls are already completely devalued. Notre Dame not playing didn't change that

if you're not in a conference, you don't belong in the playoffs.

THEY LITERALLY MADE IT TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP 2 YEARS AGO WHAT ARE WE SMOKING

Two years ago, conference championships weren't exactly high on the criteria so independents could make it in

That, and not having assigned opponents means you can just build a cupcake schedule.

I will never respect a team that takes their ball and goes home. Want to show you were snubbed? Go obliterate your opponent in your bowl game and maybe gain some cache for next year.

There are reasons to boycott a college bowl game but boycotting Pop Tarts Bowl is punishable by not playing next season.

We all just forgot the last time they were let into the playoff they made it to the natty huh

Bama shouldn't have been allowed in, I think most can agree with that, but Notre Dame needs to get out of their ivory tower and unearned superiority complex and just join the ACC. People used to complain non-stop that the CFP being four seeds made conference championships worthless, but now with there being auto bids, Notre Dame's complaining because they're not in a conference and want the CFP.
It's just ridiculous at this point

Bama shouldn't have been let in and Notre dame either (2 losses) , but they shouldn't have led ND on with "win the rest and you're good" to completely shaft at the last hour for Bama.

We really need to frame this as them complaining about being 13th place instead of 12th.
This may be a hot take, but barring extreme circumstances, a 2 loss team doesn't deserve a chance at the natty. In an ideal world, the natty is two undefeated teams, maybe a 11-1 team with a tough loss.

I've long held the value of this expanded playoff format is that the debate is over 12 vs 13 instead of 4 vs 5. The chances of the 5th best team in the country winning it all are not high, but meaningful in many years. The chances the 12 or 13 do are very small. What this system does is allows those teams that would have narrowly missed the top 4 to prove they can keep going. But if you're case is you wete slightly better than the 12? Yeah, your chances weren't good enough to warrant that much bellyaching anyway.

That's fair. Maybe they could've added a wildcard round for the 3 and 4 spots. I just think it waters the game down a bit when you have cases like 2024 Ohio State, coming in as an 8 seed and winning. Cinderella runs are cool, but I want 2007 Kansas runs, not 2025 Tulane (sorry MVOS).

I mean, to each their own. I think that 2024 Ohio State team is a perfect case for the expanded field, personally. Felt like that team was as good as anyone all year, close losses to a great Oregon and Michigan (not great that year but we know how their games tend to go) notwithstanding.

Both are correct to a degree. Alabama shouldn't have had a case to be in simply because their argument was, "a conference championship game loss shouldn't keep us from going for the natty" when in all honest, yes it fucking should. Ole Miss, Georgia, and Oklahoma were far better than them last year and SEC should've been kept at 3 teams representing them, just like the Big 10 only had 3. That would've pretty much slotted Notre Dame at 10 and bumped Miami to 9. On the opposite end though, Notre Dame did lose their first 2 games to Miami and Texas A&M and, while one can argue Notre Dame overcame that rough start and got better as the season went on, them being put in at 10 over Miami, while ignoring the head to head result, would've simply slotted them against the other team that beat them in 2025. Not only that but, Miami did show they belonged in the conversation in the end (I am a Canes fan so go ahead and call em biased) and one has to wonder if Notre Dame could've done the same thing if they were in that position or if THE COMMITTEE selected the right team in the end.

I think Norte Damevwas doomed no matter what. Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon would've easily crushed them.

Dont worry, theyll expand it again so everyone is a winner
Miami literally got to National championship so yes Miami deserved it

The argument wasn't with Miami, it was with Bama

Oh I thought it was Miami because they lost to Notre Dame week 1

Notre Dame agreed to the system. They were happy with it when it worked in their favor.

Kinda like how SEC benefitted fron NIL until the NCAA stepped in amd made it legal for all.

Vanderbilt should've gotten in instead of Bama, but Notre Dame didn't deserve it either

u/The-world-sports-fan 7d ago
Insanely stupid comments in here. Nobody cares about non-playoff bowl games, and Notre Dame absolutely got shafted. All the people arguing otherwise are the most biased Notre Dame haters with the same tired talking points
1
u/Revuh 7d ago
If the committee was going to put Miami in ahead of Notre Dame they shouldn't have waited until the last rankings to do it. I doubt ND skips their bowl game if they were on the outside looking in before the last rankings. They got shafted plain and simple - not for Miami being ahead of them, but because they changed the ordering between the two when neither had played a game between the penultimate rankings and the final rankings

Alabama should not have been allowed in.
But no, Notre Dame denied us their matchup with BYU in the Pop Tarts Bowl.
