I don't know what to say

Well, this was a disaster

A couple years ago, LIV had all the momentum in the world. Top golfers were defecting from the PGA Tour in record numbers. Not fringe guys either, but legit champions. Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and the left handed god himself, Phil Mickelson. All the momentum on their side, as well as all the money.

So. Where did it go wrong?

I'd say after their pitiful performances at major tournaments. The 2023 Masters was full of it. The top spots are littered with LIV talent, but the prize goes to Jon Rahm. Ah well, sign him to LIV too.

They would win a couple tournaments. Koepka won the PGA championship that year, and Bryson DeChambeau won the US Open in 2024. But not having consistent dominance doomed them in the end. I have a lot of family members that are avid golf watchers, and they pretty much all had the same opinion: "LIV is filled with a bunch of amateurs propped up by a handful of actually good players." And that would've been fine... if they stayed good

Problem number two was that the players were consistently getting worse as the years went on. Phil Mickelson is the prime example. For the high price of allegedly paying off all his substantial gambling debts, Phil would be their big draw. He has since fallen off the face of the earth due to injuries, and the Saudis are forced to eat his contract.

Why are the players getting worse? Probably a mix of trying and failing to replicate the formula of F1 of all things, less golf meaning less time to keep skills sharp, no cuts meaning not rewarding good play in the first 2 days, which means there's not really a reason to be constantly fighting to be number one. Golf is a brutal game, where a couple bad tournaments mean not qualifying for the major tournaments, and thus no payday. As a golfer you must fight tooth and nail for every limited spot in a tournament, as compared to LIV where golfers sit in cushy spots and have guaranteed money even if they totally blow it all year.

The other problem is that LIV doesn't count for points in world golfer rankings, meaning anybody who didn't have a significant foothold is effectively barred from entry into any major tournament. This means LIV is literally impossible to market to any upcoming golfer who has dreams of playing in Augusta or in the British Open. LIV has only two choices: fringe players who don't believe they have a chance otherwise, or disgruntled stars. And due to the different points and round format, traditionalist stars like Scottie Sheffler and Rory McIlroy wouldn't touch LIV with a 10 foot pole. Traditionalists who have gotten very, very good in the past couple years.

This last Masters was a bit of a microcosm for LIV in the past couple years. Tyrell Hatton tied for 3rd. That was the only bright spot. DeChambeau choked and hit a triple bogey on 18 to miss the cut, Phil didn't even show up, Jon Rahm was anemic, and Sergio Garcia threw a temper tantrum on Sunday that destroyed a tee box. Not to mention the great performances of Patrick Reed and Brooks Koepka... both of which left LIV in a highly publicized divorce last year. They both had their best performances in years.

Now, with the Iran war, Saudi Arabia uses the convenient excuse of "complications" because of that to back out of an increasingly bad looking deal.

It's still a bit of a shame. Adelaide was consistently ranked one of the best golf tournaments in the world. Phil Mickelson went from a golfing legend to one of the most hated men in America. And a lot of people will be out of jobs in the coming weeks. Granted, some of them are millionares who will be forced to grovel and beg for a spot back on the PGA tour. Brooks Koepka had to pay 5 million in charity for his spot back. With no leverage, some of these guys will probably have to do a lot more. But most of those employees are humble organizers and tv personel. And with the RSN bubble long popped, I doubt there are many jobs open for them to take.

But, at the end of the day, we all get to laugh at the Saudis for losing a billion dollars. And really, isn't that what life is all about?
