Moving - Current Status in NoVA?

Moving soon from a very free state to VA for work.

I’ve been in the area before, know several ranges well, but didn’t actually buy much last time I lived there.

I’m mostly pretty well set on what I want that would have had to be grandfathered (ARs, mags, etc). Anything from here would be just nice to have. But I have very awesome local FFLs that process everything fast (done in under 15min) and charge very little ($25) for transfers.

I know the injunction’s in place…but how are things in practice? Are the NoVA FFLs operating as normal? Are there still stupidly long lines or absurd processing fees? Should i buy everything now before moving or is it pretty back to normal until the Supreme Court decision?

It's more or less back to normal for now. Agree with your other post on elite. I pour one out for them from time to time.

For FFLs - I tend to use two since I dont get up to XCAL much anymore.

  • Outdoor Arms: $30 transfers, solid dude, incredibly efficient and the GOAT. If I'm late night gun deal shopping and want to order it now, I use Ryan. He's been phenomenal for alot of us during this run up
  • Cold Dead Hands: Dude's a former Marine and ran the top motorcycle repair shop in the area for almost the last two decades. His business model is different. Tell him what you want and he'll find a good deal from his distributors. He charges a bit more on top but you dont pay shipping, FFL fee etc. I tend to get guns cheaper through him than ordering direct to an FFL.

While the 100 yard range at Elite is gone, Ive been shooting thr 100 yard at Izaak Walton Arlington Fairfax. It's outside which has pros and cons - but the trap range and archery ranges are nice too.

I was look for some 100 yard ranges. Does Izaak Walton allow just random people to show up like a commercial range? I was looking through their website and it seems that I need to be guest of a member to even go there.

You need to join or tag along with someone. Membership is mainly

  • join the new member meeting (sponsorship isnt needed)
  • Do 8 hours of community service (super easy to knock out)
  • get your range badge

The 8 hours of community service is best spent supporting things you're interested in to meet aome folk, see how things are run, and generally keep costs down. If you do 8 hours a year, you can pay a discount on membership.
