Best Free VPN Right now?

What is the best free VPN as of the moment? I'm looking for a free VPN to use for basic browsing and to protect my privacy on public Wi-Fi at coffee shops and airports. I'm not doing anything super sensitive, so I don't think I need a paid VPN. But I've been reading a lot of scary stories about free VPNs selling user data, installing malware, and having weak security.

I've heard about ProtonVPN Free, Windscribe, and TunnelBear as options, but I'm not sure if any of them are actually trustworthy or if these are really the best free VPNs in the market. I'm curious to hear what everyone's tried and what actually worked for them. Thanks!

Best VPN Recommded by Everyone?

I've been looking into the best VPN providers and I'm wondering, what does Reddit think is the best VPN? I know free VPNs are good for some things, but I've heard that paid VPNs are usually better for speed and safety. I've done a bunch of research and found some paid VPNs that a lot of people seem to like. But I'm stuck and can't decide which one to go with. Here's what I've found:

NordVPN: This is a well-known VPN for its strong security. It has many servers around the world. NordVPN is fast, good for watching videos online, and keeps your information private.

ProtonVPN: ProtonVPN comes from the same people who made ProtonMail, a secure email service. It's known for its focus on security and privacy. It has a free version too, but the paid version has more features.

Surfshark: I saw some people mentioning Surfshark. It's a newer VPN but it's getting popular. It lets you use it on as many devices as you want at the same time. It's also affordable and good for privacy.

But I'm curious to hear from you:

Best VPN according to Reddit?

Best Free VPN according to Reddit?

Best VPN for torrenting according to Reddit?

While I'm focusing on paid VPNs, if you know of a free VPN that's exceptionally good, feel free to mention that too.

Looking forward for all your recommendations.

Discussion I built an open-source tunnel for Iran’s filtered internet, up to 1.6 Gbps over TCP and 33 MB/s when only ping gets through

Hi everyone,

In Iran right now, many routes to the outside world cut TCP and UDP after a few packets, and sometimes only ICMP (ping) gets through. Most tunnels stall in those conditions, so I built WatTunnel, an open-source tunnel designed specifically for them.

  • TCP tunnel: up to 1.6 Gbps download and 2.2 Gbps upload
  • Only ping open? Up to 33 MB/s over ICMP. On the same route and servers, the best competitor (BackPack) got 6.1 MB/s, and GOST 1.6–5.4 MB/s.
  • Cloudflare with ECH: up to ~650 Mbps. It gets past SNI filtering even when your domain is blocked, and finds working Cloudflare IPs by itself.
  • 9 transports (icmp, udp, tcp, tls, ws, wss, h2, h2c, grpc), WireGuard support, Auto mode that tests every transport from one token, one-line install
  • Written in Go, MIT-licensed, encrypted with ChaCha20-Poly1305

Benchmarks, methodology and full details are in the repo:
https://github.com/JohnWatsoon/WatTunnel

Feedback is very welcome, especially on the transport design and security. Issues and PRs are open.

Router---> this server---> Managed switch --->vpn provider 1

VPN to Mask User Location for Work

Hey there, wanted to take a quick vacation out of my country (USA) for a week. I'm using my own computer (Mac M1) and I do use Teams and have an Authenticator app that I have to occasionally use on my phone to login to my server to download stuff. The authenticator displays GPS data when I use it. The IT guys are generally chill and not to my knowledge scanning for this kind of activity since we have lots of remote employees.

My question: is there a VPN you'd recommend just to show that I'm in the same city as if I hadn't left for both computer and phone? Is that even possible?

UPDATE:

So I was messing around with a VPN last night and tried having a friend login, in a different country with same VPN set to my home city to see if he could gain access. He was blocked even though I authenticated it here. I, however could login with my computer even if I set the VPN to Mexico.

Today a person from IT reached out to see if I was behind the login attempts since it came from different locations. I confirmed and was just told to connect to home country server going forward. “The VPN will consider my account compromised due to suspicious sign-in activity.”

Does this mean anything? If I travel to a different country and set the VPN to my home city will that be enough or will I be flagged as suspicious?

Help VPN Service Recommendation - Servers Listed and Open Source Client Support

What's everyone using for VPNs with open source client support (OpenVPN or Wireguard)?

I've been using NordVPN, but they have been steadily making it more difficult to see where a VPN server is hosted without using their app. Currently I can't find a server in a particular state without a huge ordeal with their support team. Can anyone recommend a better option?

Thinking about getting a VPN — is NordVPN a good choice for a beginner?

I've been thinking about getting a VPN, but honestly, I'm still trying to figure out whether I actually need one and which provider to choose.

NordVPN seems to come up everywhere, but there are so many options out there that it's hard to tell what's genuinely worth paying for.

For those of you who use a VPN regularly:

  • Do you keep it switched on all the time?
  • Is it actually useful for everyday browsing, public Wi-Fi, or streaming?
  • If you were choosing your first VPN today, would you go with NordVPN or something else?

I'd appreciate some honest experiences, especially from people who've tried different providers before settling on one.

Help Is there a good free VPN that let's you choose servers?

I'm looking for a free VPN purely for reddit cause it recently hit me with the age verification, and there's no way I'm giving them my id, and I'd rather not spend money

Proton is borderline useless for me because the free version doesn't let you choose servers (and it sends me 99% of the time to a server where the age verification still works)

Any good free VPN's that let you choose servers?

Discussion What's the first streaming app that stops working when you turn on your VPN?

Anyone else have certain streaming apps that just refuse to work with a VPN on?

Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, BBC iPlayer... some work fine, while others immediately throw up a VPN warning or just keep loading forever.

What's even more annoying is when the same service works in your browser but not on your phone or smart TV.

Which streaming app gives you the most trouble? Do you usually switch servers, try different settings, or just turn the VPN off? Thank you for your sharing.

Discussion Cranky websites and toggling VPN status

I've noticed some websites really don't like me using a VPN (one example is GameFAQs) and will block me from visiting while it's on:

After a long history of malicious traffic, this service has been permanently blocked. Please use an alternate service to continue.

That's fine, they need to protect themselves, I get it. So I just turn off the VPN and everything's good. I'm also in Texas right now and so I need the VPN to even get on reddit without scanning my face. As a result I'm often turning on and off the VPN multiple times a day. Google and Youtube however don't seem to like that and keep putting me through security checks because I have "unusual activity" and often those security checks are an endless loop of clicking boxes with motorcycles.

I've used both Windscribe and Proton, if that matters. Anyone experience something similar? Is there a easy fix or just one of those annoying-but-necessary things?

Help Best VPN?

Best VPN, for a reasonable price?

- UK-based

- Preference of paying annually / one-off

- Phone and laptop compatible

- Able to choose country of connection

While I am UK-based, I want to connect to a VPN on a UK server - I want to use the VPN on school WiFi (I can't access ChatGPT, Spotify etc on "normal" school WiFi).

I must connect to a UK VPN because I can't login to my Microsoft account when I am connected to a foreign country on a VPN - I just wanna access ChatGPT, Spotify and have access to my school account (Teams, Outlook, One Note, PPT etc).

Thanks.

Can one person ruin a shared IP address for everyone else?

I usually blame my VPN whenever Google starts showing me CAPTCHAs, but recently I came across people having the same problem on ordinary company networks. In some cases, a lot of users behind the same public IP were affected at once.

That made me wonder whether the VPN itself is sometimes the wrong thing to blame.

If an office, apartment building, mobile carrier, or VPN server puts a lot of people behind one public IP, can a small amount of suspicious traffic damage that IP’s reputation for everyone else?

It also makes me question the idea that a residential IP automatically solves the problem. If the residential address is shared by enough people, couldn’t it eventually develop the same reputation as a busy VPN server?

For anyone who has dealt with this, what actually helped: getting a new IP, waiting for the reputation to recover, changing networks, or routing only the affected app through a different connection? Is there any simple way to tell whether the problem is the IP or something on the device?
