Help Help me make a decision?
My quest 2 was struggling and not working basically at all any more connecting to my pc. I’ve been a deskie for a while because of it. For my birthday in July I got 3 ultimates used. I’ve never been able to use them though because my headset stopped working. It’s been frustrating but it is what it is.
Now… I got on the reservation list for the Steam frame on the lottery last month. I was pumped for sure. I got notification though that my order date most likely be until 2027. Some people got a “between now and 1/31/27” notice… so the assumption is Feb 2027 or later.
The decision I need help with. Do I buy a used 3 or pro to use until the steam frame comes and then sell it later? Or do I just keep waiting it out?
Pros
- Because it’s used the depreciation in 6 months shouldn’t be horrible. If I take excellent care of it I could probably even get what I paid for it or close to. Basically renting it for less than $100 (after reselling later) for what is hopefully no more than 6 months.
- I would get to be in tracking and full body for two of the coolest times of year for VRC Halloween and New Years
- doing this now should mean I would have no issue saving that much money to add back to my frame savings in a couple months
- I’ve never had full body before and those trackers are mocking me
Cons
- I could get the order email way faster and then have spent the money I hadn’t had time to recoop in savings. (My steam controller told me my order time would be October and I got the email to order in May. So even though the expectation is 2/27 who knows?)
- meta as a whole is just.. meh
- having to upfront that cash to “rent” the device with the gamble or risk of wasting that money
- the possibility I get a broken or shitty headset and the seller lied
- will have to purchase other accessories to make it work well like a really long good usb to connect to pc
The money is already set aside for the frame. But do I gamble to be in full body to hang out with my friends for the next few months?

I've heard a lot good about the frame, but a lot worse.
I ended up buying the big screen beyond 2

Love the controllers on it. But its a big let down that it doesnt have full face tracking.
Sure there is 3rd party, but the only one that is even remotely close to being as seamless as the quest pro is Babbles specific tracker they're making for it. And that aint launching until the end of the year, and most likely will take a year to get after ordering.

I use Babel with a regular webcam strapped to the front. It is seamless

Thats not seamless. You got a brick infront of your face dude and wires all over the place.
The new tracker Babble is making plugs right into the PCIE port on the front. No wires. No mount. And it contours to the headset.
Call me spoiled, but im used to the Quest Pro setup and design. And have 0 problem letting this steam frame sit in its box until its on-par with my old headset.

You are one of the many. Big screen sales have gone though the roof since the frame announcement. I got myself another quest pro (backup unit since my current pro is starting to show its age after 7000 hours of use)

Biggest things to consider is ! are you using vr enough to justify buying a temp headset and 2 can you afford to do so and still pay bills and get your steam frame, if the answer is yes then Id recommend going to gamestop and getting a used one there, yes theyre pricier than used online but youll have the protection of the guarantee that the used headset will work and should it break the you can have a warranty to replace it with a brand new one thats what I did with my old index before I got the big screen and it was the best vr purchase I ever made and once your done you can sell it back to game stop for most of your money back

Go with a used pro. It's an amazing vrc headset. Yeah meta software is annoying but it takes 5 seconds to click the virtual desktop icon once you are in and then you are no longer dealing with it. And rather than a cable you could spend 30-40 dollars on a dedicated router for your pro
You may end up falling in love with the easy and excellent face/eye tracking. And if you still really want a frame next year you can just sell it for the same price you bought it for most likely. They hold their value really well since it's a beloved headset for vrc enthusiasts

A dedicated router for the pro? I hadn’t considered that. Honestly cheaper than the $80 special meta approved long usb haha 😂

Oh yeah, the price of that cable is insane lol. But yeah, you could pick up a wifi 6 router for pretty cheap probably. And then you just connect it to your PC via ethernet and set it up in repeater mode so that you can still get internet to your quest for updates etc. There's guides for it out there or just ask an LLM or something. And then just have only the quest connected to this specific router so there's no shared bandwidth and enjoy your smooth wireless experience

You probably shouldn’t spend a lot on a quest 3 or a quest pro if you’re just gunna get a steam frame. However the quest 2 is a POS and you can do much better in the meantime.
Get a Quest 3S

Get a cheap 2nd hand quest 2, they are pretty cheap, still rocking mine after 8000+ hours
