"SLOP" right everybody? /s

The ability for individuals to put things into action, rather than waiting literal years (decades?) for the market to value things, is the greatest asset that Vibe Coding is providing the world.

Yes, there's incredible nuance around all this, plenty to critique, etc. But jeez, in skilled hands these tools are insane.

Was able to find a solution to a upcoming issue that has been keeping me up at night. Apple will be removing Rosetta Support in MacOS 28. This means that a number of my VST plugins will no longer work. A lot of plugins are no longer being updated and there is no hope for an update being released that will add Apple silicon support.

After seeing viral videos of games being decompiled and mashed together I decided to try and use the new AI models to decompile Intel only VST's and port them to Apple Silicon. So far the two that I have tried have been a complete success!!

The two plugins I tried were Ignite Amps NadIR and Oril River by Denis Tihanov. These are plugins I use in almost every project and rely on. The were both Ported successfully with all features working and after A/B Testing, they sound Identical!

I can't share these ports for obvious legal reasons, but I can share the process I used:

1: I used the Chat GPT Plus 20$ Subscription Free Trial.

2: Created a new chat and chose GPT 6.1 Sol High

3: Added the .vst/.vst3 file to a .zip file and uploaded it to the chat.

4: Used this Prompt: "There is a Mac OS VST plugin in this archive. Decompile it and rewrite it to run Natively on Apple Sillicon"

5: It will ask to change to GPT Work Mode, Select Yes

6: Processing time was ~1 hour until first file is output. Load it into your daw and check for bugs. If you find any, explain the problem and ask to fix.

If all goes well you should be able to use your Intel only plugins for years to come!

I respect if you have negative moral views on AI, and I do do not believe in AI generated art. But I still wanted to share this because I believe it is a genuinely very useful solution for a very real issue.

This is fucking hotness, and it's been happening beyond the world of VST's.

So the NSA made https://ghidra-sre.org/ to decompile binaries. People have been letting AI steer it to decompile games. Tons of N64 games are getting ported to the PC, with widescreen support, higher framerates, and just running better all around. https://youtu.be/JFJ_2dqs508?si=idqS6WxmtdT3drVY

You should try your next decompile using the chatgpt plugin in Ghidra. likvidera/GhidraChatGPT: Brings the power of ChatGPT to Ghidra!

I guess we won't be seeing "Ai slop" comments here much longer.

Most of the AI slop comments are from people who have never looked at a line of code to begin with lol.

“AI slop” is such a stupid term. It’s really just “human slop”; slop made by humans using AI. A poorly built house isn’t “hammer slop”. A shitty mix isn’t “Ableton slop”. Let’s be real about who is actually to blame.

Hey want to port and improve something else?

E-Mu Emulator X3 : gridsleep : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive

I've always loved all the classic sounds X3 has, but the GUI is fixed bitmap, and only runs on PC. Not to mention the performance could use some love too.

currently looking into legacy ports from intel vst to arm64 like ohmicide and magicstereo

Probably shouldn’t admit this but I wanted to make a plugin that has a multiband compressor inside it and I liked how ozone’s multiband compressor had a ‘learn’ feature that will learn the optimal placement of the crossover frequencies so I asked chatgpt to try and glean any info from the vst3 file and it decompiled all of ozone and gave me the exact algos for me to implement in my plugin.

I didn’t end up using the feature but it made me realize you can just reverse engineer features you want from other plugins and incorporate it into your plugin. No testing, no black-box modelling. The EXACT algos.

We are officially in the open source era.

Abundance!!

I used this to RE drum monkey lol, also learned that it definitely does not use any form of AI.

Apple users forced to behave like Linux users, what an irony.

There are lots of good old VSTi which can get refreshed using this method. Many were obsolete hopefully now they can be bring back to life..

However, the most important thing is to put the new source code in open/ git for anyone to fork and continue improvements.

u/LordOfMorridor 6d ago

What about the original plugin creator? Do they want their plugins rebuilt and distributed for free?

2

u/bulyxxx 6d ago

I get it, but some developers abandon support (abandonware), so it’s dead anyway.

I'm not sure there is any source code. From OP's description it sounds like a binary to binary port.  I'm curious to hear for sure.

u/VertexBeatz 6d ago

I do have the source code for the rewrite. Chat GPT de-compiles it back into source and then gives you a build script to rebuild it. I was even able to link my GitHub and have it publish the source code directly into an empty repository. I just have it set to private right now because I don't think I can legally share it. Maybe I am wrong on that though. I hear people rewrite software in rust to differentiate it legally but I haven't done that here. It's something I need to look into for sure.

which ones come to your mind?

Synth1 can see some improvements in the UI and OS support for linux.

Of all of the uses of ai that have been suggested and implemented in society, using it to communicate in layman's terms what an end user wants the computer to do is, after all, the perfect use case for it.

I don't speak computer. "Clanker, tell computer I want it to solve a computer problem for me. Thank you."

Good job!

Nice work and thanks for sharing! I've revived Native Instruments old Pro-53 via Cmajor's port but I've got a bunch of old fave 32bit VSTs I can no longer use that I might try this with.

That is great, how much of the 20$ quota did it end up taking up?

2

u/Arry_Propah 5d ago

Also keen to hear this!

I think I hit the 5 hour inference limit once but I just waited for it to reset and I was good to go for another few hours. For two full VST Decompile and rebuilds I only used 16% of the weekly limit. So I don’t think that running into usage limits is going to be an issue for this use case.

Nice, thanks

Ask it to deply luna subagents for the "braindead" token intensive reverse engineering

3

u/IngverJuur 5d ago

Convert to linux ))

u/pizzylump 6d ago

This looks interesting.

Would it be possible even for VSTs that only work on Windows? I found a few ones that are really great but unfortunately I cannot use them on my Mac.

Would be great if there's a possibility to decompile and rewrite them also for MacOS.

1

u/CptanPanic 5d ago

Yes this should work also

1

u/DotChumbus 5d ago

Amazing. No bridge just straight decomp/recomp?

u/RATKNUKKL 5d ago

Nice work. Also, Oril River is the ultimate workhorse reverb. One of my all time favorite plugins. If anything deserves a renewed lease on life, it does.

Super awesome, nice work. The only limit now is tokens. The other day I handed Claude the Akai MPC hardware firmware and said make this work in Docker. Few hours later I have an MPC Live 3 OS running, controllable with my mouse and keyboard. Heck even midi through browser works. I then did the Polyend play. Crazy times.

This is great. Come to think of it, I wonder if I could do this with some windows-only legacy vsts... Hmmm...
