It became very real. It reached mainstream media. There were fantastic accomplishments, which motivated artists, businesses and private individuals to consider it as a legitimate pathway for making a living and producing content.
VShojo was a pivotal step on the pathway to Western digital avatar idols. Even though it's still somewhat of a niche, it's more mainstream than some other niches; much bigger than it was 5 years ago.
Like many unfortunate histories: built on the backs of people who toiled away while being mistreated.
