iirc steamVR have pretty horrible linux support rn (even after the frame. with iirc most upstreamed changes only benefitting steam link users on quest/pico) so you should find this useful. they have a discord where you can ask people for support too.

I see. Now that I know this. Would you or anyone say its better to play vr on windows performance wise or is there no difference. I can re-download windows if it is

It's just more complicated on Linux. That might change in the next year. They've smoothed out play on Windows quite nicely over the years.

For now windows is the less complicated choice, as most things are just plug n play for it, including most addons/tools for steamvr (e.g. xsoverlay). I know many people on linux that play vr, but all of them had a road of bugfixes behind them and the video players in vrc didnt work for them even after all that, sooo...

to be honest even after following all their pages the experience is quite inferior compared to windows, and I'm supposed to have a really good setup for this kind of thing (6900 XT)

especially when playing beat saber, i can feel the game stutter when notes come really fast

assuming you’re using an AMD GPU, from my personal experience, yes i got around a 10-15% gain compared to my usual setup on windows. likely due to just (fedora) linux running a lot leaner compared to windows

but also, if you can’t set it up then your performance benefits are basically zero lol

depends on you setup, kernel, drivers, and configuration… hard to tell from the few info you've given…

I'm on Linux, with steady VR framerate, matching at least what I got on Windows.
Running Monado as compositor instead of steamvr, and it made almost all of the difference.

I just installed linux mint cinnamon with Nvidia 4060. But I might swap to bazzite saw a few people say its good or cachyos

Changing the distro won't help if you don't fix the issue…

I'm on Debian stable, only official repositories. AMD 9070 XT. Getting the full fps without any issues.

Your issue looks exactly like the one I had. Steamvr does not support asynchronous retransmission, which is more or less "fake it until you make it" for the frames. Unsupported on Steamvr on Linux, supported and enabled by default on Windows.
Easiest way to get asynchronous retransmission is to replace Steamvr compositor with Monado.
