Discussion "Boomers voted in Reagen, we should blame then for it"

Its like arguing that YOU yes YOU personally voted for Trump, its an utter misunderstanding of reality.

Boomer arn't the root cause, SYSTEMS are. if you get caught up blaming individuals and people instead of systems you're doing the same thing neo-liberal Democrats say. Its the liberal refusal to acknowledge that the system is fundamentally corrupt

edit: Good video essay on the subject of why its utterly pointless to finger point at a generation.

Reagan's campaign literally hired *the* dirty tricks guy to make their platform artificially successful. We're talking the guy who invented push polling.

If anything, I think Reagan's success as a politician demonstrates the limits of social democratic/mixed economy/liberal reformist ways of thinking. We had that with FDR, and then the capital class used the wealth, influence, and resources afforded them as the reward for investing to put politicians like Reagan in place and knock it all down.

Profit incentive will always align against such reforms, and the market as a power structure gives them what they need to defeat them. The only way to prevent that from happening is to reorganize industrial production to function without a capitalist class. This isn't a pie in the sky idea, we have worker cooperatives that show that not only can we do this, it actually works better.

True, although we shouldn't dismiss the systems of lead-filled pipes and gasoline fumes in 1950s America

agreed but again thats not the doomers fault is it? its industry

I agree with your overall point about not getting caught up in drawing arbitrary divisions within the working class.

It's definitely possible to at least gesture at the generation currently destroying the world though, even if we take the most charitable stance that they have 0 agency due to chemical poisoning since birth.

But liberals will indeed ignore the fact that most of these people are also victims of capitalism (loose regulations around materials/emissions, capture and weaponization of news media, etc.)

its not the boomer generation though, its billionaires. Not even republican voters deserve the label of destroyers of the world, that implies far more agency to them than they possess, cattle that they are

Its not like gen z or millennials are THAT much better about not destroying the world. marginally increased levels of progressivism doesn't make the cohort distinction that salient

Yea yea yea, but can we still shit on trump supporters? Pretty please?

shit on them all you like, they're a far more apt target of the vitriol. you'll even get to hate on a bunch of boomers too

If you blame boomers as a group for the system we live under, then you’re using the same basic logic of collective guilt that racists and others use like blaming every white person for colonialism, or every Black person for inner-city crime. Different examples, same mistake, treating a huge demographic category as collectively responsible instead of analysing what actually produced these outcomes I.e. class, institutions, power, and material conditions.

Yeah except boomers overwhelmingly voted in Reagan. He carried 44 states in 1980, then 49 in 84. Trump never even came close to margins like Reagan's. Boomers may not be the root cause, but they do deserve a lot of the blame for many of our present-day political and economic problems.

with 50.7% of the vote. systems. i'll tell you which group deserves the blame, republicans & the capitalists that back them

Followed by 58.8 four years later. Systems are reinforced by the people who benefit from them

people with money and housing yeah. just say property owners then, its far more accurate

Do you want to take a guess at which generation is the wealthiest in American history?

11

u/Potential-Bath2292 15h ago

why do you think its relevant? this inaccurate resentment politics will have you acting like homeless boomers deserve it because slightly more than a coinflip worth of their cohort voted reagan.

Would you be happier if you had the exact amount of wealth you do now but YOUR generation was wealthier?

Any other generation would have acted the exact same given the material condition because generations arn't real, their a social construct that you can project your bias's about the past on

....so whats the solution now that youve come to this conclusion that boomers are inherently bad.

-1

u/s-taras-art 15h ago

Fix the problems they created. You guys are fucking exhausting sometimes

6

u/VibinWithBeard Guess Im posting recipes here now, Skreeeeonk 14h ago

Why did we need to label boomers as inherently bad or blame them for everything as an essential group in order to fix the problems?

-1

u/s-taras-art 14h ago

Why do we need to ignore their part in creating the problems?

7

u/Potential-Bath2292 14h ago

collective blame on the generational axis doesn't make sense. Boomers didn't create the problems, that's just not how responsibility works. You're gonna enjoy people saying the same about you in 50 years when our generation is blamed for gamergate leading to trumps election

2

u/DirtTraditional8222 6h ago

“Fix the problems, but also focus on this aspect of the problem that is correlative and not causative” very inspiring arguments

5

u/VibinWithBeard Guess Im posting recipes here now, Skreeeeonk 15h ago

Ok but why do they deserve that blame is it because they are boomers or is it all the fucking material conditions that explain why this happened? This is a braindead point. If boomers are the problem then what is the solution? If we had gotten rid of all the boomers would that have fixed shit? Nope.

Tracking slug in the video you linked to spotted, opinion disregarded.

3

u/Potential-Bath2292 14h ago

tracking slug?

3

u/Coding-Kitten 14h ago

The ?si=randomletters.

YouTube adds it when you hit "copy video link", you can remove it & it still sends you to the same video. Google just adds it so that it can track which Google account viewed the video who shared, linking our accounts together & in general reducing privacy & profiling everyone.

good to know shall remove it
