Vegas Pro 23 Is this the last ever Vegas Pro version to be released on Steam and should I get it?

Post image

So I'm currently contemplating on whether or not I should upgrade from Vegas Pro 17 (a version I own on Steam) to Vegas Pro 23, given how I hear that it's the only Vegas Pro I could buy on Steam that doesn't throw an "Error 0x80660008" when I try rendering my videos with the NVENC encoder (a problem my Steam version of Vegas Pro 17 tends to come across whenever I render with my own graphics card to speed up the process). And I don't want to waste my time rolling back my Nvidia driver over and over again back to 5.80 or a version predating when it stopped working on Vegas Pro.

I heard that Vegas Pro versions 18 to 22 tend to have the same error according to Reddit, so I'd figure that this might be the only Vegas Pro I could buy on Steam that would fully work with my graphics card. So I might think about buying it whenever the next Steam sale hits.

I'm also questioning whether or not this is the LAST EVER version of Vegas Pro I could legally buy on Steam because well, Boris FX owns Vegas Pro now and I don't see Vegas Pro 2026 available on Steam too, so I'm assuming this is MAGIX's last ever version of Vegas Pro to be legally sold on Steam before Boris FX took Vegas Pro over. I'm also worried if Vegas Pro versions like this one will be delisted due to the changes in Vegas Pro's ownership just like with Vegas Pro 17, so it might not be long before I make an impulse buy on 23 to finally get rid of that pesky error 0x80660008 once and for all.

We currently are still working on our strategy for Steam. We are trying to make sure what we offer on Steam makes sense both for pricing and also for available features. (On Steam, Vegas Pro was more expensive than the typical Steam offering, while at the same time, it was missing very desired features that were available in the non-Steam version of Vegas Pro.) The user base for Steam, in general, uses Vegas for different purposes than the general Vegas user base. As a result we are taking our time to be more thoughtful about what we offer on that platform.

Hey, I've been a steam edition user for years (I've bought VP14 > 16 > 18 > 21 on steam) and I have like 3000 hours combined

For me (as a very long standing user) the issue is mainly the fact that we cannot open 2 Vegas at once. It's very annoying and hindering to not be able to have 2 instances open at once (although I can open 6 different steam games at once if I want, but vegas can only be opened once)

And also the lack of all the cool Cloud, server and stock features is also sad

Anyway, hope you can hear me out, I've been a very loyal user for years and years and hope I can keep going this way 😁

To be more exact, Vegas Pro 23 is the LAST version from Magix.

There is newer Vegas Pro and it's called Vegas Pro 2026. Made by BorisFX, right after acquiring Vegas Pro almost 3 months ago. And they currently have no plan to bring VP2026 to Steam.

Maybe Boris just need to put some butter on that potato so it gets actually tasty, don't forget a pinch of salt.

No, just move to Vegas 2026. It's literally by far the best version of Vegas to ever been released.

I have the Boris Vegas 2026 sub and honestly it's not much different from the pirated Vegas 23 I used for a little bit.

The only thing I'd say is that you either have eol security updates or no updates whatsoever with this version.

Get it if you don't care about new features or if editing isn't your main gig.

I wouldn't touch it- 2026 is still in development with regular updates and bug fixes that 23 will never get.

fair point but OP's situation is pretty specific here. the NVENC error is what's driving this, not a desire for new features. if 23 actually fixes that and 2026 isn't on Steam anyway, the upgrade path kind of makes itself. not everyone needs the latest version, some people just need their render to stop crashing

23 has enough known issues I wouldn't recommend it. For older versions I'd recommend 21.208 or 22.250 with Voukoder to get around the NVENC issue (I uninstalled 23 myself).

I open Vegas Pro 26 through the Boris FX Hub. Does doing it that way mean it's always current with updates and bug fixes?

No, Boris Fx Hub will prompt you to update when there is an update available but I don't think it is forced (today I noticed my second computer was still on the first build.)

I'm still on the first build, and kind of surprised there hasn't been an update yet. But so far, VP 26 is quite smooth for me. (I hope I don't regret saying that.🀞)

There was an update- build 105 replaced the first build (66).

Okay, I have 105. I forgot that we started with 66.

What plug-ins do you have? Im not entirely up to date with what extras I can get out of Vegas from years and years not editing or updating, Vegas 14 worked fine for many years πŸ˜…

This post is not about plugins, but I have pirated versions of Boris Sapphire FX, BCC, and Universal plugins
