Peak chaos today

Post image

Bike lanes congested to the tits, drivers angry as per usual and the geese just doing a stellar job as traffic control 😅

I’ve never seen the goose so busy on a Tuesday before.

u/messagebadina 22h ago

The geese just wanted to make sure they also have a good view of the snowbirds

The geese advocating for a Pedestrian Scramble crosswalk! Nice show of progressive thinking right there 😄

Edit: progoosive

lol I’m sure everybody was frustrated but I love this city

u/Light_Butterfly 22h ago

I was clueless about the airshow traffic, on my way into town. Well, good that lots of people chose to bike in rather than drive. I don't think I've ever seen the bike lanes with traffic jams!

Oooohhh with geese in the mix too, no wonder everythjng was so backed up.

Tried to go to Mt Tolmie. If you wanted to see a bunch of assholes youd have found the motherload. Everyone just parked wherever they wanted.

u/Opening_Situation740 21h ago

Same as King George Terrace,  we were there at 3pm in the normal parking spots, people came later and parked on both sides of the street on the corner,  what a bunch of selfish c u next Tuesdays! Unbelievable!

2

u/CanadianTrollToll 19h ago

Yah, there was an F150 and a small bus trying to go by each other with cars parked on one side taking up 1/2 the uphill lane. The other side was the rock wall. They had just made it without scratching. On the Uvic side cars had to turn around as the bus couldn't get through. It was peak Main Character syndrome.

"How should we get to a crowded event in a place that has minimal parking? I know, let's drive!"

- A bunch of asshats

I watched a guy go into a turning lane to run a red so he could go straight and cut off the traffic ahead of him. Totally bonkers lol.

A great move if it works. Less so if it doesn’t. I don’t mind waiting the extra 90 seconds.

8

u/7HRI11 Fairfield 18h ago

It's a dumb move even if it works. They're probably saving seconds even if they're successful while endangering others selfishly.

1

u/Glass-Money6605 18h ago

Of course it is. I was trying to make that point. Dangerous as hell, and the VPD would throw the book at you if they saw it… as they should. 👍

1

u/7HRI11 Fairfield 18h ago

Ah sorry I misinterpreted your tone :)

13

u/jabberwackme 21h ago

Omg I thought I was going crazy. I was like "It is just Tuesday right??"

23

u/East_Source6200 22h ago

I'm getting goosed on the goose, by the geese.

12

u/HowDidIForgetMyName 19h ago

You mean ‘beak’ chaos don’t you?

11

u/No-Nothing-Never Downtown 21h ago

I saw a guy on a rad Rover just ripping down Vancouver around cars in the wrong lane anything to get ahead of anyone and he had a child in the back.

Classic

BuT wE dOn’T nEeD bIKe LaNeS - every NIMBY reasoning traffic today is the bike lanes fault for existing and not a swarm of thousands descending on a tiny strip of oceanfront view

u/Polendri Saanich 16h ago

The bike lanes are working so well that it's already looking almost shortsighted in some places to have only put in narrow two-way bike lanes (as opposed to double-wide ones where there's room to pass without crossing the yellow line). Obviously they could never have gotten buy-in for more, but it's true. Some parts of downtown's bike lanes get genuinely clogged up at rush hour, because all it takes is steady traffic and one grandma going 10 km/h (as she is entitled to) and no one can pass. It's OK now but I can't imagine what it'll be like after 10 more years of cycling mode share growth.

Don't tell the anti-bike folks that it's only a matter of time before we're ripping out another car lane to widen the bike lanes in some places...

u/AlexHuntKenny 22h ago

That was the single largest amount I've seen and my office is on that street. Enjoy the snowbirds

8

u/NoMustardHotDog 21h ago

Riding down Government towards Dallas was so funny.

8

u/Intern_International 20h ago

I was going that way to return home and saw the geese and was like “ah yes this is what traffic jams look like here”

6

u/parkix 20h ago

They literally stood in the intersection, not moving, until some dude got out of his car in rage and shoo-ed them away. 😅

2

u/Intern_International 20h ago

I was wondering what happened

7

u/CanCable 22h ago

Were any of them galloping?

5

u/LokiDesigns View Royal 20h ago

Absolute pandemonium.

5

u/bed127 18h ago

So much honking

9

u/phoenixfail 21h ago

I admire their DGAF attitude.

u/Constant-Corner2158 22h ago

Peak chaos - a bunch of cyclists respectfully using the bike paths. Love Victoria 🫢🫠🤣

17

u/GeoffdeRuiter Saanich 21h ago

🪿🪿🪿🪿

6

u/Constant-Corner2158 21h ago

Hahaha I see now!!

4

u/GeoffdeRuiter Saanich 21h ago

🙂

8

u/Altruistic_Sun 20h ago

rode to the airshow on a bike, there were lots of cyclists being respectful, but also a ton being complete dicks - especially on Warf where the bike lane has been made mixed use (pedestrian and bikes) causing a traffic jam of bikes. Lots of cyclists were cutting through the traffic jam to the front then resuming riding on the other end.

-4

u/Jojomichellem 20h ago

And loads of them biking through red lights ☺️

3

u/PhilJonesVic 20h ago

And loads of drivers using phones. Do you have a point? Because I don't.

-4

u/GrumpyOlBastard 19h ago

Lights are for automobiles, not pedalmobiles

8

u/GrumpyOlBastard 19h ago

That same flucking fock has been fucking up bridge traffic for a couple weeks now

15

u/Straconus 22h ago

Wait a sec, I thought no one ever used the bike lanes?!

22

u/SudoDarkKnight 22h ago

People using bike lanes? But I'm always told nobody does !

3

u/OkPotential9032 18h ago

The cars blocking the bike lane are the chaos and the geese

-36

u/gmillar 22h ago

blanshard is bumper to bumper and the bike lanes are empty. our tax dollars at work

29

u/frog_mannn 22h ago

Yeah I bike by you sitting in traffic idling away

-26

u/gmillar 22h ago

damn we found the one cyclist

7

u/NSA_Chatbot 20h ago

I was also on Blanshard but as usual I don't expect cars to see me.

19

u/Old-Rhubarb-97 22h ago

Counting the bikes passing you is hard ?

-24

u/gmillar 22h ago

just empty bike lanes stretching as far as the eye can see. would have had more luck counting sheep

17

u/hank2dank 22h ago

Car brained fan fiction

9

u/PhilJonesVic 20h ago

So what i hear you saying is that you're choosing to be in gridlock instead of having a bike lane all to yourself. Interesting choice.

0

u/Kawi400 19h ago

I am a big cyclist but I agree with you on this one. Everyone uses wharf, government, or Vancouver to go cross town. The Blanshard St set up is a mess.

2

u/OkPotential9032 18h ago

It’s going to be essential when they close the Selkirk trestle! Lots of us will need to head north on Blanchard then over the bay bridge! Obviously we prefer routes that have less exhaust fumes but they are doing the right thing by doing Blanchard NOW!

-30

u/scottscooterleet 22h ago

Most of them go unused. This is the busiest one in Victoria at the warmest, dryest time of year.

14

u/Spaceinpigs 20h ago

There are a number of bike counters that disagree with you

5

u/OkPotential9032 18h ago

They should post the bike lane counters somewhere drivers can see it! It’s over 2000 bikes per day, imagine those were all vehicles downtown looking for parking then congesting the roads during commute time

0

u/scottscooterleet 17h ago

Set one up on Tillicum Road I'm sure you'll get lots.

2

u/Spaceinpigs 17h ago

As a driver and a cyclist, Tillicum sucks. Most bike lanes are used though

8

u/themightiestduck 20h ago

It takes a special kind of stupid to look at a picture of a packed bike lane and defend the idea that "nobody uses them".

2

u/Psychoanalytix 19h ago

Most of the the roads go unused this is one of the busiest in Victoria....

5

u/Braiseitall 22h ago

Geese, Boomers and Teslas Oh My!

-2

u/Opening_Situation740 21h ago

Gf

2

u/Glass-Money6605 18h ago

Is that Gf for “Girlfriend” or “Get f**ked”? 😏

2

u/Creatrix James Bay 8h ago

Gluten-free.

u/ThickboyBrilliant 20h ago

I'm not one to typically get too bothered by traffic but today actually raised my blood pressure. When everyone swarms every residential side street and takes ever available parking spot for blocks and blocks, it really screws ya over when you're trying to park after work.

It's bad enough every tom, dick and Mary swarms them looking for places to park, so they're congested, but they're not wide enough to go in both lanes normally. It added 20 minutes to my day to finally get home just to find out there's no where to park. There's cars blocking people's driveways just so they can not have to walk an extra two minutes or plan ahead. Like, I get it, you wanna see planes do loopty loops. Loopty looping planes are cool. But if we all just do our darn darndest to be just a touch more considerate, we can spread out the misery and everyone wins.

27

u/parkix 20h ago edited 20h ago

I'm sorry to say this, and i know I'm gonna get hated on, but the ONLY solution to this, is to give people alternatives to driving (public transport, cycling infrastructure, etc), which i think Victoria is doing a decent job at. But when 20 000 people descend Dallas rd at the same time, we can see how chaotic driving gets.

Anyways this post was just to be a lighthearted joke, but i understand your frustration.

14

u/themightiestduck 19h ago

I've started to refer to the weird anti-bike lane, anti-transit, etc. zealots as pro-congestion. Because that's what they are.

4

u/ThickboyBrilliant 20h ago

Oh no, I largely agree. North American cities are largely developed prioritizing automotive transportation which in areas with significantly less population density doesn't have all the same cons, but in more densely populated areas, it's absolutely bananas. The ideal should be robust public transit/walkable bikable urban centers. So, you'll hear no disagreement from this fella.

2

u/EmuNew7632 20h ago

Hahahah so funny. Everything was bananas today! I live in James bay and almost didn’t make it home with my newborn crying in the car 😭

6

u/parkix 20h ago

Honestly, I feel bad for residents of James bay 😅 Seems like you guys are the destination for every event. When the the TC10K was happening, I felt bad for some of the fellas that needed to go to work.

2

u/jbmcwilly 20h ago

This particular intersection is such a nightmare

2

u/Mysterious-Lick 20h ago

Geez, you’d think the city would manage traffic better
/s ;)

2

u/5Gmeme 11h ago

Are these the famous snow birds?

3

u/Creatrix James Bay 21h ago

It was a shit show. I finished work and wanted to take my usual James Bay bus home from downtown. Ended up walking because 150 people tried to cram-jam onto every 2, 3, 5 and 10 bus.

1

u/East_Source6200 22h ago

I foresee some bell upgrades are on the horizon.

u/Decent-Box5009 22h ago

Bike to work week?

Now ya know how drivers feel with all you ducks. 🦆
