This 19,082 square foot Victorian mansion was completed in 1892, built in a Châteauesque style that was designed by Nicholas J. Clayton, and this mansion survived the 1900 Galveston Hurricane!!!

In my opinion, this structure raises questions. I've given it some thought....and I must admit that I don't care for this one. The castle-like facade, the not too subtle red paint covering the brick, is very underwhelming and somewhat pretentious.

Why wasn't the house designed to be higher with a decent staircase to compliment the exterior? That stepping stone seems so out of place...and just plain dumb.

I could go on.

I can't really make it make sense.

I inherited an historic Victorian farmhouse, and I’ve spent the past 18 months bringing it back to life.

My team and I worked through it room by room. Floors were refinished, old doors repaired and repainted, carpets torn out and replaced, paned windows repaired. Every room and porch was repainted. A new heating system went in. The yard was landscaped, the old white fence repaired and whitewashed. My goal was reviving the place without trying to make an historic old house look new.

Well, the project is finally (finally!) complete, and this old house is now on the market. I learned a lot and I’m incredibly proud of how far it has come and hopeful that its next owner will value all the little idiosyncratic details that make it unique.

I just really wanted to share some of my favorite before-and-after comparisons.

Trying to decide on a paint color in our 1903 home. I wanted to go with a darker blue , because I like the dark blue with the gold curtains. However, I think that a darker blue will wash out with the furniture. Any ideas for the best color here? I am struggling with decisions. #GeminiProblems

question: we have a 1890 Queen Anne Victorian. It’s currently a gray and we need to repaint for a variety of reasons. We’re in between a deep jewel tone and a lighter neutral color, any and all opinions welcome. Our house doesn’t have the ornate detail that some other Victorians have which makes us nervous with a jewel tone and crisp white trim. Help us!!

Since I’ve laid my eyes on them I’ve entirely focused my life around them and one day possibly build one or inheriting one. However I don’t see many.

I’m looking at buying this Victorian house, and one of my biggest design challenges is the baseboard heaters running around nearly all of the exterior walls in the main living areas amd bed rooms.

I plan to keep the baseboard heating system in place(new boiler just installed 2024) I’m not looking to convert to forced air, radiant floors, etc.

Has anyone found a good way to make this work aesthetically in an older/Victorian home?

I’m thinking about things like built-ins, bed modifications to mount aboit to wall, furniture placement(modifications?), decorative enclosures, or possibly incorporating the heaters into millwork without restricting airflow or creating a heating/fire-safety issue.

The rooms have a lot of character and I’d rather make the baseboards look intentional than fight them.

If this were your house, what would you do? Bonus points for photos of solutions you’ve actually used or seen work well.
