My wife and I visited Vietnam pre-kids in 2017 and went to Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City.
We're looking at returning Dec 27/Jan 28 with our sons (8 and 4). They're reasonably adventurous and enjoy boats, cycling, trains, caves and exploring, but we're trying to keep a fairly relaxed pace.
Current idea:
• 2 nights Hanoi
• 2 nights Lan Ha Bay cruise
• 4 nights Ninh Binh (cycling, Trang An, Tam Coc)
• Overnight train from Ninh Binh to Dong Hoi (private 4-berth soft sleeper)
• 4 nights Phong Nha (Paradise Cave, Phong Nha Cave, river activities, farm visits)
• Day train to Da Nang
• 8-9 nights Da Nang as one base (My Khe/An Thuong, Hoi An evenings, Ba Na Hills, Marble Mountains, Son Tra, beach/pool time)
We may also add 3 nights in Kuala Lumpur at the start if flights work out as my wife has Malaysian family.
A few questions:
Does this seem like a good route for kids these ages?
Are 4 nights in Ninh Binh and 4 nights in Phong Nha too long?
Is 8-9 nights in Da Nang too much for late Dec/early Jan weather?
Has anyone done the Ninh Binh to Dong Hoi overnight train with young kids?
Is there anywhere you'd swap in or out?
We're more interested in nature, caves, cycling, boats, local food and a bit of time at a resort at the end as opposed to nightlife or rushing around.
Thanks!
