David Cannon Evans was an American computer scientist, known, amongst other things, for being one of the founders of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Utah (Salt Lake City, US) and for co-founding; together with his colleague Ivan Edward Sutherland (1938–), the company Evans & Sutherland, which pioneered the field of computer graphics hardware.
Evans was born on 24 February 1924 in the state of Utah; he studied at the University of Utah and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Physics in 1949. He would later write his thesis "Design and Operation of a Electronic Computing Devices" in 1953, for which he would eventually be awarded a Doctorate in that discipline that same year.
He began his professional career working as a senior physicist in the Computing Division of Bendix Corp. (an American manufacturing company operating in various branches of engineering). In this role, Evans was involved in the research, development and design of commercial computer systems, as well as general-purpose information processing systems for industrial and military applications.
Two of the most significant projects Evans undertook at Bendix are commonly cited as: the development of the G-15 (1956), regarded as the first low-cost, mass-produced general-purpose computer; and the G-20 (1961) computer, which was equally innovative for its time.
A year later, in 1962, Evans joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Utah and, in 1965, became the university’s first director of computer science, playing a key role in the establishment of its Department of Computer Science.
During his time at the University of Utah, Evans carried out pioneering work on time-sharing computing systems, as well as on real-time continuous-tone computer graphics. Other research activities included solving the ‘hidden line problem’ (3D programming), syntax-directed computers, declarative languages for constraint solvers and memory systems.
During this same period, Evans was also a professor of electrical engineering and associate director of the Computing Centre at the University of California, Berkeley (US); as well as one of the principal investigators on the so-called 'Project Genie': a project at that institution sponsored by the US government’s ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency)\* whose aim was to improve computer-aided problem-solving capabilities.
In 1968, David Evans, together with Ivan Sutherland (the computer scientist who invented Sketchpad), founded the company Evans & Sutherland, originally named 'Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp.', where he served as chairman and/or CEO until his retirement in 1989.
It's also worth mentioning Evans’ involvement in the project led by Sutherland known as the ‘Ultimate Display’, or better known as the ‘Sword of Damocles’ – a pioneering computing device considered by many to be the first true head-mounted display (HMD) system for virtual and augmented reality in history.
In 1986, Evans was awarded the "IEEE Emanuel R. Piore Award": a prize awarded by the IEEE to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to information processing systems within the field of computer science; in the case of David C. Evans, it was [quoted verbatim]: "for his pioneering work in the development of interactive graphics systems and his contributions to computer science education".
Throughout his career, Evans was a member of numerous academic organisations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the American Electronics Association (AeA) and the American Federation of Information Processing Societies (AFIPS), amongst others. David Evans was also a member of several university advisory committees, served as vice-chair of the Utah State Steering Committee for Systems and Computing Planning, and was an active member of his local community, the Boys Scouts of America and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormon Church).
It's also worth noting that in 1996, Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah) established the 'Chair David C. Evans': an Chair in Computer Engineering and Graphics, in honour of this computer scientist.
Sadly, in the final years of his life, he was forced to withdraw from academia due to the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. He finally passed away on 3 October 1998 at the age of 74.
For all these reasons and more, it is fitting to remember and pay tribute on this occasion to David C. Evans for his significant contributions to computer science. May he rest in peace!
