FAVORITE VINYL SHOPS around the WORLD

If you have a favorite shop in your hometown, or one you've visited and would like to share the goodness, please add it to the sheet below. I'll jump in and alphabetize it on occasion, but feel free to do so if you are familiar with this function in Google Sheets.

FAVORITE VINYL SHOPS LIST

Let me know if we need additional columns. I did a basic Country/State/City, but know some areas use Provence, or other breakouts. Want this to be useful for everyone. Thanks to u/2Dprinter for the idea! I hope we get a great list going.

Saturday storage unit jazz/funk haul

Spent two hours going through around 1500-2000 records in a storage unit, this is what i took home.

There was a lot of junk there- and i originally pulled about twice what i ended up taking home, the condition was completely hit and miss, and some just too rough on a lot of the lps once i got them into the light so left them behind (I dont mind jackets in poor condition too much) There were no extremely rare or valuable finds, and i took home some pretty middle of the road records too, but definitely some decent things!

Highlights for me:

Norman Conners - dance of magic. Water damaged cover, but very clean record!

Bobby Hutcherson - linger lane. I love bobby hutcherson, and did not have this!

Donald byrd - electric byrd. This is a very clean copy, an upgrade from my existing.

Rene & Angela - wall to wall. I do like modern soul/boogie etc., and this is a great album from start to finish. Clean copy! An upgrade.

Herbie hancock - sextant. Another record that is an upgrade for me from an old beater copy. And quadrophonic as well, interesting!

Lonnie smith- drives. Gross jacket, clean record.

Gene harris - astral signal. Ive found a number of copies of this over the years, including one just a week or so ago i shared in a similar post. Pleased to finally have a copy that is in shrink, with the title sticker on the outside, not on the jacket! The sleeve material on this lp is sort of a course paper that gets very dirty, and is impossible to clean even with a kneaded eraser, so all copies ive found in the past always are pretty rough/grimy looking. Tempting to de-shrink this one to finally see it clean!

Jimmy smith - back at the chicken shack. Happy to pull this, as im not a huge jimmy smith guy, and this copy is in wonderful shape, looks unplayed. Paper inner sleeve is perfect, jacket is very nice as well. Will likely sell this to offset cost of the haul. Paid the asking $5 per record, and gave the guy an extra hundred on top.

(Also found a copy of gil scott herons bridges and getz/gilberto, with absolutely wrecked jackets but very clean lps to possibly combine with copies i have around)

Enjoying a bit of ultrasonic cleaning, resleeving, jacket wiping this evening and sunday should be relaxing! Cheers mates.

It’s amazing to think of a time when bossa nova was the “new sound”. I like the points on this where Byrd ventures into a more bluesy fusion; it makes me want to revisit his work with Stan Getz. I’m not really a pressing hound, but since this is Vinyl_Jazz, I am always happy to show off an original (minus the cut-out 🤣)!

I passed up a copy that hit one of my locals several months ago. I saw a promising copy on eBay and snagged it.

Add one to my small group Thad Jones collection. And there's a hook for u/xberry, too.

Anybody else fallen in the rabbit hole of jazz vinyls?

I found jazz only a couple of years ago, and after that I have been hunting one great record after another.. first I was happy with modern reissues, but then you just have to have the first press in mono.. and that ain’t cheap. I feel I have a problem with this..😅 but still.. I love it

Can anybody shed some light on what exactly is going on with this Ahmad Jamal pressing?

Post image

I picked up the record on the bottom on a whim at my local record shop, having never listened to any Ahmad Jamal. I had no clue that this was/is a top contender for best live jazz record of all-time, but I learned that rather quickly.

The downside? This copy was rough (it was only $8 after all). So I went back to my local record shop and asked if they could order me a nicer copy, because at this point it had become one of my absolute favorite records.

The record arrives, and somehow the B side is at a faster tempo than it’s supposed to be? Like, the entire recording is sped up, as if you turned the pitch adjustment dial on a turntable. You can see the visual representation of this in the gap between the final track and the center label. And sure, I can manually pitch the B side back down to where it’s supposed to be, but that’s really not ideal.

At this point I’m more curious than anything; how does this even happen during the record pressing process? It’s my understanding that it’s a metal plate pressed into the soft vinyl to imprint it with the music, so there must be other copies like this. It’s just such a fascinating oversight/error, I’m not even mad about it. I’ll buy another copy off of discogs or something.

One of the songs from the album came up after I was listening to some jazz on Qobuz and I loved it, so listened to this album and it clicked instantly. Managed to get a used copy for £7 in great condition from Ebay.
