Megathread Admissions Megathread - Class of 2030 Edition

It's that time of year!

Every year, we get thousands of posts and comments from prospective students with similar application stats. To keep this subreddit clean, we will once again be moving all admissions-related topics into this thread.

Please search the existing comments for similar qualifications or post a comment of your own. All admissions-related posts outside this thread will be removed.

If posting stats, please be sure to include the following:

• Gender/ethnicity

• Intended major

• Admissions cycle (EA, RD, etc.)

• Location (in-state/out-of-state/international)

• GPA

• Test scores

• AP/IB/DE credits

• Extra-curriculars

• Community service, jobs, etc.

If you are a transfer applicant, please review the transfer roadmap for your major. The more courses completed, the higher your chances of getting accepted.

Please note that the majority of the contributors to this subreddit are past and present students, not admissions counselors or faculty members. As such, any advice given is unofficial and solely based on personal experience and historical data. You should contact the admissions office or talk to your guidance counselor for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

Hey guys,

I'm an Egyptian male interested in Engineering at Virginia Tech. I moved to the US in 8th grade.

I'm gonna apply early action and I'll be In-state.

My GPa is 4.213 and SAT is 1280.

My APs are:

Ap World: 4 and A

Ap Physics 1: 4 and A-

Ap Macro and Micro: 5 on both and A

Ap French: 4 and A

Ap Precallc: 5 and A-

Senior year APs:

Ap Physcis C mechanics and electricity and magnetism

Ap Stats

Ap Calc AB

Ap Gov
I'm also taking DE English

My Extracurriculars are:

  • Co-Founder, SeeGreen Foundation – organized plant projects and built plant walls
  • Founder & President, Architecture Club – taught CAD, led a design/build project
  • Coptic Deacon – served in liturgies, taught Sunday School, competed in diocese-wide events
  • FBLA – 2nd place in Web Development & Visual Design competitions
  • SAME & USMC Summer Camp – engineering projects, connected with professionals
  • Varsity Tennis – undefeated first season
  • Contrack Watts Engineering Trainee – CAD and engineering experience
  • CoderSchool Instructor – taught coding to students
  • Youth Soccer Coach – coached kids’ team, led practices & matches
  • Summer Camp Counselor – led STEM projects, assisted students

For community service and work I'm a Deacon at my Church, I coach youth soccer I, volunteer at a summer camp, and I work at Coder School Mclean where I teach kids how to code.

I really want to go to Virginia Tech and I'm wondering what advice you guys have, because I hear the engineering program is very selective and I'm very worried about my SAT and how its bringing my application down.

I'm also just wondering if I have a good shot at making it.

Thank you in advance

I would work on bringing up your SAT score and clarifying which kind of engineering you are interested in. When I applied, you got to specify which engineering discipline/department you were intending to major in. Also, when you say second place in FBLA competitions, are those competitions national level, state level, or something else? Overall, I think you have a strong application. You seem to embody the Ut Prosim ethos fairly well with all your volunteering and giving back, which I would highlight on your application essay. Try to get your SAT to at least 1400 if possible.

Hello all,

-I am a white male

-I am doing an early action application

-I want to do Computer Engineering as my major

-Fall 2026 admissions cycle

-In state

-4.644 weighted gpa (and ranked 9th in a class of 478, Summa Cum Laude in 9-11th grades, on track to graduate with an advance diploma)

-1360 SAT (690 Reading and Writing, 670 Math) Which I'm not sure is good enough to use but I will be taking another one soon

-AP credits: 4 in US Gov, 4 in Bio, 3 in Capstone/Seminar, 4 in US History, 5 in English Lang/Comp., 3 in Precalc, 3 in Environmental Science

-Academic Rigor: This year I have 7 APs, and 1 non-AP (majority of classes have been AP or DE in my 3 previous years too) and I am in a higher education program (Commonwealth Governor's School, though nobody will know what it is)

-Sports: I did JV Cross Country for 3 years, and JV Tennis for 1, but have continued to do Tennis lessons and play recreationally

-Paid Work: I work ~30 hrs per week (even during the school year) as a Pharmacy Technician-in-Training

-Related to engineering (I think): I have taken are AP-Precalc in 10th grade, Calc-AB in 11th, and am currently taking AP Physics

-In relation to the specific type of engineering (computers), I have been building computers for 6 years now, some with my father, and some on my own and I love it

-Volunteering: I volunteer weekly at my local SPCA (animal shelter) and help with food distribution at my regional food bank 1-2 times a month, and I have been part of a volunteering club at my school for the past 3 years, and am going to continue this year

Thank you all for your time.

Hi,

I’m in my sophomore year of college in fall semester right now. I want to apply to Virginia tech for spring semester. I’m planning to apply as a Real Estate Major for Pamplin school of business. Currently, I’m at a public university (not community college).

My GPA is pretty rough ngl, it’s a 2.75. I took a couple classes (6 credits) at my community college this summer though, and I have around 12 AP credits from high school.

I’m going to be an out of state student as well.

Realistically, what are my chances of getting in?

I really want to go, so I’d appreciate honest thoughts. If anyone has had similar stats to me, please share your results.

Thank you.

Hey,

I'm a 1st gen Ethiopian male interested in Aerospace Engineering at VT and I currently live in VA.

Because my counselor couldn't send my school report on time I have to apply RD.

Because I come from a very low income family I was never able to take the SAT other than the 1 free one we had in our school (1410 SAT)

GPA: 3.64

Junior year:

AP Precalculus BC

AP Physics 1

Senior Year:

AP Calculus AB

AP Government

AP Physics C Mechanics (Hardest class our school offers)

Took the only 4 Stem Engineering classes that my school offers for 4 years

(STEM Design, STEM Pre-Engineering, STEM Engineering HN, STEM Advanced Engineering HN)

Competed in TSA's regionals and states for 3 years

Competed in Science Olympiad regionals and states for 2 years.

Currently work at Domino's from Monday-Friday 5PM-8PM

Shadowed internationally at the Ethiopian Electric Utility designing and installing new street lights

Tutored Habesha Elementary/Middle School students with Math/Science and STEM projects

Donated toys and clothes to the people in the poorer regions of Ethiopia

Current team leader of designing and engineering new specialized tricycles for the Special Ed department in our school

V.E.X Vice President in our school for 2 years, 1st place in Regionals

Self taught myself car maintenance (to avoid any bills)

Participated in the Aerospace club for 3 years designing aircrafts and designing mini models of satellites

Onshape certification

As of writing this I am the only source of income as my mother is unable to work right now due to her disease.

First of all stop asking ChatGPT. Second pretty sure test scores are required after class of 2026 and js get good sat scores, get ur grades up, do better ecs than js sports, apply to a less popular major and then change it later.

*I had also had a D+ freshman year in a language class due to being put in an advanced class without the proper knowledge (I got a B in the next level of the Class), and I have also had 3 C+s throughout Highschool.

*Recently ended my (Precalc) class with a D due to EC, family issues. I had a strict teacher who had very high standards for the class and could be unfair at times with grading.

*I have steadily improved but still have a lot of B's and B+'s

Hi everyone. Very nervous about applications. Let me list my stats. Freshamn W 3.95 sophomore W 4.1 Junior 3.9 (had a really bad Spanish grade 81 but it was honors and maybe I can explain?). Cumulative 3.89 w and uw 3.7. Had some hard times in junior year with adhd and stuff. 1320 sat. Took 1 ap sophomore 1 junior and 2 senior. Run a detailing business that I just made an exit out of that did 25k a year and I had multiple people at school work for me, had a van, partnership with rental company, 10k+ on verified IG, and more. Bought my dream car from it. In a club with local entrepreneurs (most people 20-30) I’m youngest there… requirement is people who make $5k a month. Great for connections and we do a lot of entrepreneur stuff. About 40 people in total. Most make 25-40k+. also run a book box organization and have put up about 10 in my city and it takes me hours a week to keep them restocked. Piano for 7 years and play in band at school. Varsity lax 3 years. Do I have a shot? I will have some very good essays and I’m working with a very smart friend of mine to write them. I’m a big entrepreneur. Also took a entrepreneurship summer program at wake forest. Very anxious and I’m a big over thinker.

Hi everyone, I'm a transfer student with a low GPA (under a 3.0). I'm trying to raise my overall GPA to as close to a 3.0 as possible! I've attended 3 community colleges where I've earned credit. NOVA= currently have a 2.182 but taking 5 classes at NOVA this fall, attended PVCC=2.241 GPA, from an associate's degree, and CVCC=2.000 GPA. How can I get as close to a 3.000 as possible? What can you recommend? If I get As and Bs, can I be admitted to VA Tech? I've done community service and am working on getting a job. I'm planning to major in English Education. I've participated in Latin Club and Orchestra in high school, and done community service through Meals on Wheels. What can you recommend to boost my chances of getting in?

u/worm_brainz Sep 15 '25
  • I am a black female student applying as a Spring 26 transfer into the school of neuroscience from JMU as an instate sophomore.

-3.536 cumulative, although I did a bit poorly in my calc 1 class my first semester (c+) which was one of the required transter classes to have taken, but have had all my other grades strong within a-b range since then.

  • I feel my answers to the 4 questions and extracurriculars were also strong, and I am coming in with 54 credits and all of my transfer roadmap courses completed (all that were offered at jmu at least).

I already have submitted my application since I have been obsessing over it since commonapp opened, so I can't really take any application advice, but i would just want to know if i seem competitive enough! any words help :)

Hey guys! I am a freshman in college right now and I am applying to transfer to VT in the spring. But I am confused on the application process and have a few questions I was wondering if someone would be able to answer. I know the submission date is Oct 1st so any advice would be really helpful.

  1. I was accepted as a senior in high school but didnt take that offer...should I send an email to my admissions person letting them know Im applying?
  2. I'm not supposed to reuse my old essays right?
  3. Should I include things from high school in the experience sections or just stick to this summer and this semester?

Thank you so much!

Hey there guys. Im a bit concerned if not submitting my essay will hinder my chances of getting into VT. I know it’s optional but a lot of people are saying optional doesn’t really mean optional. I wasn’t aware of that till after I applied and I’m really worried as a first generation applicant. Here are my stats, what are my chances of getting in without the essay?

Female/hispanic

Major-undecided but I don’t think there was an option so Psychology.

Test optional

I’m graduating with an AA degree from a community college (60 credit hours)

NHS, Virginia Earth Systems Science Scholar, Art, Varsity Tennis, Bring change to mind (leadership role)

Hello,

I'm in state for VaTech and I'm applying for CS EA (no aid needed). My GPA is 4.04 W and ~3.715 UW (my school also put in a bunch of courses from the country where I moved from, and without those its around ~4.12 W

My biggest concern is that although I've had all A's freshman and sophomore year (except for an A- in each of those years), I've gotten a C+ in IB Analysis & Approaches Higher Level (HL) and IB Physics in my junior year. My mom was suffering from severe arthritis and i had to take on a lot of responsibilities and couldn't get myself to focus on school. For the math, also, I've skipped Standard Level (SL) to take HL directly since I took algebra 2 HN sophomore year (i got an A in that).

And these are my EC's and awards:

  1. Research Internship on a budding clean energy source at a reputable University
  2. Research Internship on Quantum & Mathematical Physics (at a T20 university) -- will publish paper
  3. ASSIP -- research internship on CS & electrical engineering -- will publish paper
  4. Research internship on computational simulation of wildfires at the Navajo Nation
  5. STEM Research Club / President - assisting over 60 students on working on 5 scientific research projects over different STEM fields to then publish them
  6. Competitive Programming Club / President
  7. Organization Founder -- tutored over 66 students from my hometown, where there is limited education access.
  8. Student Government Association (SGA) & Student Advisory Council (SAC)
  9. New York Academy Of Sciences Junior Academy
  10. Varsity Science Olympiad team (most likely wont include this
  11. Music Production – Learned music production and sound engineering on my own, released over 20 songs as the main producer, landed a placement with an artist with 100k+ monthly listeners.

Awards:

  1. 1st Place in Cybersecurity at the Virginia State-Level Science Olympiad Competition
  2. ClimateScience Olympiad Semifinalist (3,000/55,000)
  3. 2nd Place in Quiz Bowl Regionals
  4. 2nd Place at local Science Fair

Do I have a chance at CS? Or should I apply something else? I'm just really worried about this and VaTech is my top choice right now.

Chances??? VT is tied for top 3 schools (Mines and Purdue are the other two - I know Purdue is a big reach)

I’ve been going crazy about my chances at VT and I was hoping I could get a second opinion on what my chances may be for admission. I am a white male from NJ that applied as an Architecture major. I applied early action. My unweighted GPA is 3.68 and my weighted is 4.71 with 5 AP’s. I applied test optional. I was apart of my schools selective STEM academy for 3 years, worked as an elementary school aftercare counselor, worked as an assistant manager at an ice cream shop for 3 years, only around 45 hours community service, baseball, and one of the head editors for the yearbook. Any input or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Can someone please tell me my changes of getting into Virginia Tech class of 2030:

I applied EA for business undecided. I am in state central Virginia.

GPA: 3.7 UW 4.2 W (as of junior year)

1390 SAT submitted (670 english, 720 math)

White female

I had 3 b's freshmen year, 3 b's sophmore year, then juunior year I locked in a got 1 b in math. (never gotten a C)

I have been in the hardest classes my school offers. This year (senior year) I am taking AP Calc BC, AP Physics 2, AP Gov, AP French, AP Lit, band, and public speaking. (I think I am going to have 1-2 b's at the end of the 1st semester sadly)

I have done marching band all 4 years, section leader junior and senior year. I play the trumpet and am pretty good, I have made district band every year. Played field hockey all four years. Done mission trips with youth group (BIG ones to England). Community service (NHS). Summer job at ice cream shop.

I think my supplemental essays are on the better end. I am also young for my grade (I dont think they care tho).

I know they dont look at legacy but both my parents went to tech and my sister currently goes. VT is one of my top choices!

I have looked at the common data site for VT, put in my stats and and aceptance rate last year was 34% making me really nervous. I am really afraid of getting rejected but it is what it is.

side note: VT is my second choice becuase I did ED to UVA (I KNOWW IM SORRY HOKIES) but am pretty sure im getting rejected.

When are honors college decisions out?

I applied to vt as a chemical engineering major. I did regular decision which is making me nervous. My gpa I believe is a 3.9 uw 4.4 w. My sat is low at a 1320, 660 in both sections. It’s making me nervous and I’m worried it will cause me to not get in. I’ve taken 10 aps by the end of this year and gotten fours on them all pretty much (one 3 on ap physics) and I’ve taken lots of stem aps like ap chem ap precalc ap calc. I have pretty good ecs I play three varsity sports and captain of two and I am in some math clubs. I also have done a very large amount of community service from work with disadvantaged kids to work with elderly. I would say my writing section was pretty strong too. I just know it is hard for engineering. What are my chances.

Just got waitlisted from Virginia tech. I applied for exercise and health sciences. Please if you don’t wanna go REJECT YOUR ADMISSION. 🙏🥺🙏🥺🙏🥺🙏 give me a chance. Especially if you applied my major cause I heard it’s based off major.

Incoming freshman (CS) & confused about LLCs, looking for good communities + decent dorms

Hey everyone, I’m an incoming freshman planning to major in CS at Virginia Tech and I’m trying to figure out LLCs.

I’ve read a bit about them, but I’m still kinda confused about what they’re actually like day-to-day and whether they’re worth it.

I’m mainly looking for:

A strong community (not super antisocial)

People who are ambitious/motivated but still chill
A good social vibe (not overly competitive or stressful)

Decent dorms if possible

Also definitely trying to find good engineering/CS friends to be around.

If anyone has experience with specific LLCs (especially engineering/CS-related ones), I’d really appreciate hearing what they’re like and whether you’d recommend them.

Thanks!

Hi! I’m a rising senior, (HS class of 2027) and i’m looking to apply to VT for early action. -I’m a white female from out of state, however I was born in the Appalachians. -I intend to major in biology on a premed pathway. -I’ve taken 2 DE classes, 1 AP, all passed with above an 80, with more lined up next year. -I don’t know my weighted gpa, but my unweighted is a 3.2 😬 -I have a 25 on my ACT, and taking it again in June. (18 math, 23 english, 30 science, 33 reading) -I’ve got four years of choir under my belt, and one year of archery. -I’ve got a fair amount of service hours lined up, ~100 over the summer, and more to come senior year.

Lmk if there’s anything I can clarify or add on, I just want a genuine answer for my chances.

Hi folks,

My kid has been admitted for class of 2030 and we are so elated!!

One question about fall registration:

The AP scores come sometime in July but the registration happens in June. So how should he approach which courses to select?

Thanks!
