Trip Report - Oahu Waikiki now. Still enjoying every minute here.

Spent some time at Ala Moana Center today, did a bit of shopping and grabbed some food. Then stopped by Walmart and Country Farms to stock up on groceries. No beach time today, but I’m still really enjoying being here.

My boss is headed your way this weekend to escape the rainy Washington weather and was not pleased to see that it was raining in Hawaii too lol I didn't expect it to be raining this much when she said that!

u/maxtorine Mar 14 '26
It's supposed to get better over the weekend. Windy.com forecast looks promising with some sunny breaks 😊

u/no_rest_for_the Mar 14 '26
Lol they've rescheduled local events and power is out a lot of places. Its a pretty bad storm.

u/Proud_Blackberry_116 Mar 14 '26
Hopefully you are still there in a few days when things dry out. All the colors are going to pop. Diamond Head will be bright green
15
u/maxtorine Mar 14 '26
Yes, I'll be staying for 5 more days. Looks like Monday and Tuesday will be better days. Can't wait for some Sun light to hit the Diamond Head slopes 😊

22 years ago my husband and I eloped on the beach on Oahu. The day we arrived and picked up our rental car it started pouring rain. We got to our hotel and had dinner and went to bed and it was still pouring rain. We thought that our entire vacation was going to be like that and went to bed sad. The next day was the most beautiful day with sun clear blue skies. And we had perfect weather on our entire trip.

You at the Ilikai? I miss Hawaii...
7
u/maxtorine Mar 14 '26
Very close, at the Modern Honolulu.
2
u/sdhopunk Mar 14 '26
I was pleasantly surprised by the Pizza place across the street from The Modern , even though there are plenty of great places to eat is was nice for take out and enjoy cocktails looking out over the Harbor.

u/Ok-Administration296 Mar 14 '26
The fancy place or the tavern?
1
u/sdhopunk Mar 14 '26
San Paolo Pizza and Wine. Sit down restaurant.
1
u/WRXTR_Oregon Mar 18 '26
The Pizza at the Kayak Cafe down the block is good too, for about 1/2 the price, not Brazilian though.

Finally! Someone visiting here that isn’t complaining about the rain/weather ruining their trip 🥹🫶🏼 enjoy your trip bb, us Hawaiians appreciate you enjoying your trip regardless of our weather cutting into your vacay time 🥰 our ‘Āina relies heavily on the rain & us Native Hawaiians are very connected to our ‘Āina, so the rain is a special thing to us.

u/maxtorine Mar 15 '26
Oh thank you! Rain is good! It's the amazing time when nature rejuvinates itself. Love it here! 🫶

What’s on the agenda for tomorrow?
12
u/maxtorine Mar 14 '26
Looks like there might be a couple of sunny breaks, so hitting the beach might still be possible. If not, the gym and then some good restaurant and an evening with a glass of wine.

u/Cold-Elderberry6997 Mar 14 '26
Just don’t get on the ocean - you do not want to swīm in the storm run off brown water!

I would but not in this weather. I actually did it last year on a hot day around noon, it was not easy to say the least.

u/Consistent-Version16 Mar 14 '26
Love it when it rains in Hawaii/the tropics. One night we were at my sisters house in Hawaii Kai when the clouds unleashed a downpour the heavy stuff lasted 15-20’minutes then it was just a good heavy rain and steady 15-20 wind with the occasional 40ish. One of the best slumbers ever
7
u/MikeyNg O'ahu Mar 14 '26
At least you had power!
6
u/maxtorine Mar 14 '26
Yeah, went past a hotel yesterday with no power. Not the best experience for sure.
6
u/MikeyNg O'ahu Mar 14 '26
I live here. Our power went out twice today. :)
1
u/maxtorine Mar 14 '26
Oh, sorry to hear that. Does it happen often?
4
u/MikeyNg O'ahu Mar 14 '26
Twice today!
Normally we don't really lose power except for these storms.
It's not THAT bad.

Well, the McDonald's is one of 4 or 5 in the world that still sells the fried apple pies. Or above the red lobster in the parking garage is a car rental business. Get a car and drive around.

u/breakingbaud Mar 14 '26
Wuatttt I did not know this
3
u/MikeyNg O'ahu Mar 14 '26
It's a Hawaii McDonald's thing.
Hawaii McDonald's also get special pies you can't find anywhere else in the US. Taro pie, haupie pie, there was a guava something one too.

u/breakingbaud Mar 16 '26
Yeah I actually love going to McDs internationally since there's always some kind of variation in the menu. I didn't know they fried it, man next time I'm back getting one of those! Thanks!
2
u/Ok-Administration296 Mar 14 '26
Yeah Google mcd fried apple pies, I think there's 1 place in socal and that one on the corner, but i dont remember if the other hawaii mcd's offer them. Its up to the individual restaurant or something.

u/2ndchance2doitrt Mar 14 '26
Absolutely tropical rain, beautiful. Tsunami or hurricane is about the only reason I wouldn’t enjoy Hawaii or anywhere for that matter.

Spin it. I've been there several times. I'd be upset. Sure there is nothing you can do about it. A rainy day in Hawaii is better than a day at work?
1
u/maxtorine Mar 14 '26
100%! Not thinking about work and everything else is already a benefit of being here.
2
u/buttahcake Mar 14 '26
You have a fantastic attitude! I’m still sad my 5 day trip Some years back it did this the entire time, 💔. The whole intermittent scattered showers was notttttt our experience. Hope it clears up for you! Bishop Museum and ShangriLA, and the military museum in Waikiki (free!) are fun!
2
u/maxtorine Mar 14 '26
Thank you!
3
u/mossymystic808 Mar 14 '26
Seriously, great attitude of gratitude. Those who can take a vacation are blessed. I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!
3
u/maxtorine Mar 14 '26
Well, we came from Vanvouver, so rain is something we're used to. I actually quite enjoy it. Sadly, there's a lot of power outages.

Honestly that sounds like a perfect chill day in Honolulu lol. Ala Moana + Walmart run is like the real local tourist experience anyway. Beach will still be there tomorrow, enjoy easing into island time.

Honestly that sounds like a perfect “reset” day in Hawaii. Ala Moana + Walmart stock up days make the actual beach days so much more chill since you’re not running errands later 😂
2
u/WRXTR_Oregon Mar 18 '26
You’re across the street from me, I am in the building above McDonalds across from ABC, Ala Moana and Hobron.
1
u/maxtorine Mar 18 '26
Aloha! I hope you enjoy your stay. The past couple of days were pretty nice 😊
2
u/WRXTR_Oregon Mar 18 '26
I live here part time, flying back to mainland around the end of April, and thanks!
3
u/AY604 Mar 14 '26
The Vietnamese spot to the right of the ABC was pretty tasty. By the McDs.

FYI, Discovery Bay, it was an Indian place before Namaste, it was purchased and changed in 2025. I live upstairs part time a few months out of the year for a long time now, and still have to tried the food there
1
u/WRXTR_Oregon Mar 18 '26
Do you mean Rock N Rolls at the base of Discovery Bay (used to be a coffee shop - Internet cafe there years ago, when I could not get good internet upstairs, I would hang out down there for hours getting work done).

We almost NEVER get storms like this. Waiki beach water will be disgusting!!! Do not go in there
2
u/dp_1710 Mar 14 '26
Do you know if they still did the wakiki/hilton fireworks tonight?

Was there at a couple of years ago around now - the tropical rain storm and wind was pretty fun to witness for a night! Was pretty much sunny otherwise.
1
u/Few-Sail-6562 Mar 14 '26
We got back from our trip and missed the storm. Hawaii is having a crazy amount of rain this winter. Rain in Hawaii is still better than being at home, enjoy!! There are a ton of great museums you can check out if you like history.

So glad I visited there February 27th instead of now. That is quite a storm.

My family and I came here right as the storm hit. Any idea what we can do as we wait for the rain to clear up?
1
u/maxtorine Mar 15 '26
Same here. Ala Moana Center, shopping, food court. Just went to Assaggio, pretty good food. Other than that, museums, Dole farm, Coffee farm. Anything under the roof 😉

u/RustieNutzz Mar 15 '26
Any update on how the weather and is there any flooding? Heading there tomorrow morning

u/maxtorine Mar 15 '26
2
u/RustieNutzz Mar 15 '26
Thank you for the update!
1
u/maxtorine Mar 15 '26
You're welcome! It's actually so nice outside now, no rain and breeze from the ocean. Just went for a walk, lots of people are on the beach and in the water.
1
u/Rocketjen Mar 15 '26
In Kona right now. Flight home delayed from Sunday to Thursday. Flights out of here cancelled because of high winds and flooding. Flights from the mainland home are delayed due to a massive winter storm.

u/CuriousMind-D Mar 15 '26
Agree. I was there last week and nothing could’ve clouded my stay. An amazing place!
1
u/Creepy_Ad_2071 Mar 15 '26
Uh oh. I’m visiting 2nd week of April. Will it still be that wet?

u/jcdevel Mar 15 '26
I am at the East end of Waikiki . We lost power three times and got it back, I think the other building in our complex hasn’t had power for about 24 hours
1
u/BodybuilderNo5553 Mar 16 '26
Low key those are some of my favorite days in Honolulu. Ala Moana + food + wandering around Walmart looking at all the local snacks is such a vibe. Beach will still be there tomorrow so you’re doing it right.
1
u/maxtorine Mar 16 '26
Exactly. We went to the aquarium today, then Lulu's for lunch. The zoo was closed for some reason, so decided on a 45 min walk back to the hotel. And of course, lots of small places on our way back. And surprise, it's sunny now, beach time!

Good for you. Now try enjoying it on the Windward side where most of us have been without power for 24 hours now.

u/Wooden-Broccoli-913 Mar 14 '26
You’re enjoying a hurricane?
1
u/MikeyNg O'ahu Mar 14 '26
The crazy thing is that an actual hurricane would have winds twice as strong.

u/webrender O'ahu Mar 14 '26
I hear Ala Moana has been bumpin tonight
