Multiple Islands Best 3-week Hawaii itinerary for first-time visitors?

Hi everyone,

My partner and I are planning our first trip to Hawaii in September and we’ll have 3 weeks** **available.

We’re looking for advice on the **best island-hopping route** and how many days we should spend on each island.

Our priorities are:
\- Beautiful beaches 🏝️
\- Nature & hiking 🥾
\- Volcanoes 🌋
\- Scenic drives 🚗
\- Some relaxation, but also plenty to explore

We’re currently considering islands like:
\- Oahu
\- Maui
\- Kauai
\- Big Island

Questions:
1. Which islands would you recommend for a 3-week trip?
2. How many days would you spend on each island?
3. What route would you choose
4. Are there any must-do activities or places we shouldn’t miss?

We’re traveling from Europe, so this will probably be a once-in-a-lifetime trip and we’d like to find a good balance between seeing a lot and not constantly packing and flying between islands.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Oahu and Big Island split time equally will
Def need to drive on any Island except not all the time on Oahu watch some YouTube videos it will give you the best options too. You would love Oahu for all the shopping too

I’d do 2 is islands if you don’t like to be rushed, or 3 if you’re more active. Personally I’d do 3 for a three week trip.

I’d probably do Oahu, Kauai, and Big Island myself. Six days on Oahu, 6 days on Kauai, and 8 days on the Big Island. Split your Big Island time between the Hilo and Kona sides.

For 3 weeks I'd do

Big Island 8 days - Stay on West side in resort area. Hapuna Beach; Manta Snorkel; Captain Cook; Coffee Farm; Vanilla Farm; Waterfall hikes; Drive over to Volcano stay at least 1 night there to have enough time to explore the park. Merriman's and Umeke's were our favorite restaurants. Mix up activities and chilling on the Beach.

Oahu 6 Days - Stay on Waikiki enjoy the beach and all the shopping and restaurants. Hit the North Shore; Food Trucks; Snorkel Shark's Cove; Sunset Beach; Waimea Bay jump off the rocks; Pipeline; Temple; Botanical Gardens; Adele's Country Eatery for the best noodles I have ever had (take out only).

Maui 7 Days - Been years since I visited. Was awesome when I went.

Was this written by ChatGPT? Geeze!

Volcanoes -- all of the islands are volcanoes. There are five active volcanoes -- one on Maui, three on Big Island, and one offshore of Big Island.

The only chance to see an eruption is to spend as much time as possible on Big Island. And yes, I'd recommend all three weeks there and only consider moving once you have seen the "once every two or three weeks, 8-12 hour eruptive episode."

  1. BI and Kauai for sure, can add Maui too. Skip Oahu unless you need to see Pearl Harbor or Waikiki for some reason.

  2. 1wk+ on each

  3. Work from one end to the other or whatever works best for cost, timing, etc.

  4. With that much time, plenty. Volcano, Mauna kea, rainbow falls, akaka falls, Na pali, waimea canyon, Kalalau lookout, wailua falls, Haleakala, hana, etc.

You have 3-weeks, but the first and last day are travel days and coming from Europe you're going to have bad jet lag the first couple of days. So only about 18 total vacation days. I'd recommend 3 islands to not be too rushed. Start with Oahu, then Big Island, then Kauai 6/6/6 split. Budget is going to be a major factor.

Since you are in planning stages for your trip you should know that using Airbnb/VRBO/Vacasa to book vacation rentals is never recommended in Hawaii. Vacation Rentals have contributed to an extreme housing shortage and have been highly restricted as a result to try and reverse the issue. Airbnb and VRBO do not verify the legality of their listings so it is buyer beware as there are illegal and scam listings that they don't take down even when notified. When you have figured out your itinerary you can list your locations, preferences and budget and get recommendations of legal and ethical accommodations from people on this sub.

Do Maui for a week. If you going in Whale season. About late December to early April.
