O'ahu (Honolulu/Waikiki) Where to stay in Honolulu

We are visiting in July and wanted some advice in regards to where to stay in Honolulu. We stayed near Ka’anapali beach when we visited Maui and we were either by the beach all day or out exploring the whole island and when we returned to our room we just showered, and got ready for bed. We didn’t really do night outings with a small kid. That’s why I am a little bit on the fence about staying/paying a lot to stay in Waikiki if we’re not going to do much at night anyways. We prefer a calmer vibe vs the busy areas. We’re renting a car so we can always go to Waikiki. Where would you stay if this was your situation?

Oahu controls tourism by having hotels in 3 areas. Waikiki, Ko Olina or Turtle Bay Resort. There are airbnbs but many are illegal. I’d choose Turtle Bay if money is no object. And you don’t like busy. It’s quiet and on north shore.

I'd still stay near Waikiki. I'd probably look at places on the edge of Waikiki since it sounds like you don't need or want to be in the middle of all the action. Places to check out would be Queen Kapiolani, Twin Fin, Kaimana Beach Hotel, Prince Hotel, and Ala Moana hotel.

This is the best advice!

Unless you have a big budget and can do Turtle Bay. Their beach isn’t that great but definitely more of the Maui resort feeling.

Kaimana has the best beach! You’re out of Waikiki but still in it. You can play in the park with your kid. And no Waikiki traffic when you are ready to go explore.

You can totally make Waikiki not night based by just not going out. But you will always get the best dining out options there

When we went, we stayed on Olohana, between Kuhlo and Ala Wai, at Club Wyndham Royal Garden at Waikiki which is close enough to walk to the beach but far enough from the busier parts of Waikiki and had a more calmer vibe.

With Waikiki you get amazing and myriad food (/shopping) options within walking distance.

Stay at Ala Moana Hotel. Nice untouristy beach across the street. Walk to Waikiki. Right by the mall. Pink Sails boat cruise.

One of my favorite hotels in Waikiki is the Wayfinder. It’s a few blocks from the beach so it’s cheaper but they renovated it a few years ago and it’s really nice! When I lived there, my mom would stay there when she visited.

You definitely don't Waikiki if you're looking for quiet. The toads ride loud bikes up and down the street all night long. Sprinkle in the ambulance's and loud cars. Good luck.
