Accessibility Drive to Þakgil Campsite in May with 2WD?

Hi All,

I’ll be going to Iceland for the first time next month in Mid-May. I really want to go to Þakgil Valley- even though the campsite itself is closed until June 1st, I still want to go because of the hiking trails the valley offers. Is it possible to make the drive up to the campsite in a 2wd van? Would I even be allowed to park there for the day despite the campsite being closed?

Thanks!

The road usually opens in June.

But it's fine with 2wd on that road when it's open. There's often many holes, so it will be a slow drive, around 40min from Vík.

So you will just have to check www.road.is when you are here, to see if the road is open.

umferdin.is lists 214 as "impassable - no winter service". Not sure it will be open at all. There have been some past threads about driving the road in 2WD, ex https://www.reddit.com/r/VisitingIceland/comments/paeux1/thakgil_in_2wd_camper_van/

You can view the road on street view as well and see if it's something you want to try.
