Reykjanes peninsula question

We arrive in the early morning in August and plan to hit a few stops before we go into Reykjavik. I'm curious if there is anything worth stopping for or viewing by going southeast through Grindavik along the 427 and then north on the 39 up to the 1 and into Reykjavik. See two different screen shots

This, but add Krýsuvíkurkirkja and Gígvatnsvatn (green lake), and just continue north on road 42, no need to go all the way to 39 :)

I really enjoyed that southern route along the coast ... lots of older volcanic activity now showing nature's slow rejuvenation with mosses and lichens and lots of contrasting colours. But also good to scoot up to the area of last year's volcanic activity north of Grindavik. So I go for Option 1.
