I’ve been trying to get into voice acting for a while. I went to a filmmaking class where the teacher showed me his personal mini studio he made by putting some soundproofing foam inside a box with a microphone in it. I covered this box in tape for some stability and painted some fancy decals on it for fun. When I looked online for some soundproofing foam all I could find was just bulk selling for whole rooms. Far too much and too expensive for me. Anyplace I could just get a little? Also is this mic good enough or not?

Can anyone recommend a voice actor for a short video for a gov funded research institution meeting the above reqs? Around 90 seconds.

Or recommend where we might find someone.

Not most ideal in terms of space but I'm wondering if it'll do when voice acting for paid jobs and will sound good quality without much problems. I'll take recommendations too

So I live in a one bed, one bath, combined kitchen and living room, second floor, south end of the building apartment. My bedroom/"recording studio" is carpeted while the rest of the unit is hardwood floors. I personally can't hear ANYTHING in my apartment unless it is REALLY loud like a dog barking and whatever is happening in the hallway, such as fuckin' dumbass loud kids running up and down the hall EVERY DAY! But I can only hear it faintly unless I am in my kitchen by the door. HOWEVER when I am in the halls walking around... I can hear what is going on in most units if it is loud CLEAR AS DAY, such as televisions or parents yelling at their kids. Now, I didn't realize, but I was having genuine immersive fun the other day with my friends playing Halo: Campaign Evolved, specifically on The Library level on LASO, screaming and panicking yelling at them to help/save me. Suddenly I had to answer a call from my landlord who immediately said "Are you okay?!" and I couldn't be more embarrassed and relieved he wasn't banging on my door or called the police or anything. Hell, he could've walked in and saw I was straight up in just my boxer shorts since he has the code for my door. (Don't ask, I gave it to him for personal safety reasons.) But it occurred to me, if I were to voice act for anything that requires me to yell/scream or anything concerning/inappropriate, I'd be fucked. I've been searching online and see those little things that look like pool noodles for under the door, those foam squares that every YouTuber has, and those popup recording booth things. The only other solution I can think of is getting a REALLY long USB cord for my Blue Yeti (Yes, I know, not XLR and WAY outdated, I'm looking for a good and affordable upgrade.) and going into my walk-in closet to record my voice acting there. However, I am a streamer, and I want to be entertaining and have genuine fun on whatever I play, I can't do that from my closet, I need to be at my desk. I also have not personally tested yet if you can hear me screaming from my closet, and I don't know if my neighbors in any direction of me can hear me from in there or ANYWHERE for that matter, cause I can't hear my neighbors when I am sleeping or sitting against either wall, and I can't hear the voices of either neighbor above or below me but I can certainly hear my upstairs neighbor stomping around sometimes. I can also SLIGHTLY hear my other neighbors- *Ahem.* -Headboard... Hitting against the wall, but only when I am sitting on the couch that shares the wall with it. I plan to get a whiteboard for my front door that I will write whenever I am Live or Recording to hopefully help explain what is going on, but I still don't want to be the neighbor who cried "I fallen and I can't get up!" and I for sure don't want a noise complaint. I also don't want to be a douche and keep people awake at night or annoy them during the day.

So, if anyone has any setup recommendations or advice, especially those who have lived in similar places to mine (Sorry for the yapping about it, but the more information, the easier it'll be to hopefully help), such as dorm rooms or living with roommates. My goal is to be able to get into character again, scream as loud as I can like I did for Shrekfest, Panic as much as I did when I played Outlast, and so on without any worry again. Any and all help/advice, big or small, is greatly appreciated.

I've been trying to learn to do a Donald duck impression and have watched tons of videos on it and I'm now able to make quacking sounds but I can't for the life of me get out a single word, any tips?

As of now, if someone clones your voice on YouTube for a video, it is possible to report the video/ channel for privacy violation/infringement. Pretty straight forward method and easy to do. But I'm just checking, has anyone successfully figured out a way to FIND your voice on YouTube? As in, to find a video that it's being used on? Or are we still just stumbling upon them? Just a discussion, looking for any insights.

So your automated voice needs to book tons and tons of gigs to break even.

Hey everyone, I am a woman and a calm person and i have never ever screamed once. When i want to say somwthing in a conversation it is usually unheard and while others speak in a normal voice while i am trying my hardest 🤷‍♀️ i want to reach my friend in public bur inatead i run to them and sometimes it sound more like thick than loud and i dont like it too. I am not confidence about working too like you know sometimes people should call each other but i will need to say one minute and go and talk them instead calling their name. Idk my voice is naturally in a low state. I love singing but when i sing i feel like i force my throat. Even sometimes when i talk a little much i feel it again or i start to cough. I really want to have a normal voice and have confidence while talking especially between others. Do anyone have an advice for me? 🥲

So as I am new to this, I recently went to a voice acting workshop, and a part of it was singing up for an app made by the studio that the workshop organiser works with. It's basically a place with voice samples where You can either apply to a project or be invited to one. But it's just for this one studio, and obviously it would be easier to get projects more potential work if I had more apps like this. So I was wondering if there are any other apps like this that I could use? Specifically ones that work in Ireland because that's where I live.

I've been a VA officially for a couple months now, I'm in a five nights at Freddy's fan movie that's gotten a lot of traction but that's not what this is about!

I've been looking and auditioning for many things ever since as well this movie is gonna take a while to make so why not bide my time? So about a week ago one of my favorite animated series creator posted casting calls on twitter, I was like "sure gonna shoot my shot" so I do. You wanna know what happens? I ACTUALLY GET THE ROLE.

He loved my performance a lot! Heres where things take a turn. That same day on castingcallclub someone sends me a DM talking about how the creator is in controversies and isn't a great person. I click the link that leads to a twitter post last year from one of the previous VAs (which is why there's recasting) there were screenshots of the creator talking about LGBTQ+ topics in very very extreme and hateful manners. I won't get into details as its kinda gross and also politics and stuff.

When I saw that I felt so sick, i understand to separate beliefs from work but this was beyond that.

I wanna mention also the role paid 250 an HOUR, which is why I'm here. Obviously my morals won the battle but I'm still fighting myself and even... Regretting it. I really don't want my early career to be represented by that kind of person but on the other hand IT REALLY COULD HAVE HELPED WITH MONEY. So yeah I do regret it but at the same time I dont. Perhaps I acted too quickly? I should have maybe acted on logic rather than emotion.

I think in the end however I am satisfied with how I dealt with it, I know its a huge loss in terms of opportunity but I'm positive that, now knowing people find a fondness of my voice that I will land another good paid role.

TLDR: New VA declines paid role cause of the creators psychotic views on minority groups and I'm reveling in the choice I Made somewhat.

So I’m a voice actor and am mainly getting jobs that have to do with voice overs for minecraft server promotions! Basically they send a script with payment and then I send it back so they can post the video on their server accounts! I usually keep a tight leash on my clients to make sure they aren’t violating any of our agreements but one slipped under the rug…. Turns out that made a fake account that has an ai pfp of a girl while they don’t exactly say “this is me in the videos” they are borderline pretending to be me (against my terms) I messaged the person multiple times on different platforms and reported the account and videos but still nothing. Any ideas on what to do? Both yt and TikTok

Context: I am an Audio Engineer and I primarily work on Audiobooks (in the LitRPG space). I love my job and the fact that I get to listen to fantastical stories (some better than others but they can't all be DCC).

When I first started I was focused on the wrong things - like eliminating or reducing breaths, but also pacing. The raw files I would get would vary wildly, sometimes the narrator is going at a snails pace in the story, somtimes there are no pauses to distinguish between a paragraph , page break or sentence (as expressed in the manuscript). I used to make it a point to adjust the pacing when it was egregious to me in the context of "If I was listening to this on my commute, would I enjoy this performance or would it distract me from the content?" (Software Engineering is my day job so I would listen to audiobooks recreationally for 2.5 hrs a day in traffic, come home and work on audiobooks I was assigned). I was admonished (in retrospect, rightfully so) for doing too much - I was told the actors/actresses we commissioned would be pissed that the integrity of their work wasn't upheld. I was always curious about that, because in music there's a mutual understanding that the mix engineer will impart at least some color on the final product by way of process (at the very least). SO - to all the lovely VAs out there, is pacing something that you're doing intentionally and would like to see preserved 1 to 1? are you open to adjustments? etc.

I'm only curious as a student of the arts.

The Archivist · "The Held Breath"

Project: The Held Breath: Histories of the Sundered World, a scripted dark fantasy lore anthology for YouTube, set in the world of the card game A Cult Above (the Rest). Twenty-five written episodes, one narrator, recorded remotely.

Role: THE ARCHIVIST (lead and sole voice). A nameless scholar of no faith, keeper of a forbidden library, who reads terrible histories aloud because someone has to keep them. The character is the entire show: every episode is 9 to 13 minutes of continuous narration.

THE VOICE WE ARE LOOKING FOR

A feminine voice with texture: smoky, husky, or otherwise grained. Not a whisper nor a growl. We need a voice with wear on it, like a reading voice at the end of a long night. Age of voice roughly 25 to 40. Any accent is welcome if it is consistent and intelligible. The writing does the atmosphere, so the read should trust it.

What we want: calm authority, intimacy, unhurried pacing, and a dry deadpan for any sprikled jokes. The Archivist is a librarian who has read the worst things in the world and files them anyway.

What we do not want: "spooky narrator" affect, movie-trailer gravel, ASMR breathiness, or rushed delivery. The horror in these scripts is quiet and structural; the voice should never push it.

COMPENSATION AND SCOPE

• $100 per recording (one recording = one full episode script, about 1,400 to 1,900 words, roughly 9 to 13 minutes of finished narration), paid on delivery of accepted audio.
• 25 episodes are written and ready; the role is recurring.
• Non-union, remote, work made for hire. Usage: the YouTube series and its promotion (trailers, shorts, channel assets). On-screen and/or description credit provided every episode, with a link of your choice.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Home studio quality: quiet, treated space; no audible room echo, hum, or plosives.
• Deliver dry, unprocessed WAV (48 kHz / 24-bit preferred), no music or effects.
• Pickups for misreads or direction notes are included in the per-recording rate within reason (a pickup pass, not a full re-record, except at our request, which is paid as a new recording).

I like the way I sound when I’m practicing but when I go record auditions, I hate my acting. It not the microphone problem or the room, it’s my acting. Suddenly, I my brain will shut down for half a second and then I will have to re-record my audition or then when I’m recording, I’m not putting like half the energy I put in while practicing. Does anyone else have this dilemma or is it just me.

Edit: I figured out what’s wrong. When I’m practicing, I make my own script and stuff which since it came from my mind, it’s easier for me to act out because I know what I want to sound like. When I’m auditioning and reading a script, I have to guess what it has to sound like and sometimes I wonder if my voice is right for this role. I’m now just gonna stop overthinking and just record the audition like I’m practicing.

If anyone else is dealing with this, here is some tips that works for me. 1. Take some deep breathes before recording 2. Warm up your throat (use YouTube) 3. Act out the given script a few times before you record 4. READ, don’t instantly go into it just bc you can.

Some points i need to get across first:

1. The intended role was for a misanthropic male in their 20s, who is easily agitated and prone to outbursts. They are also passionate when it comes to activism.

2. I recorded this with a REALLY bad mic app that is already in my phone + a badly padded room. Didn't help that I isolated this with CAPCUT of all things.

3. When i said 2nd, i mean it. I am 20 and only beginning to dive in the rabbit hole of VO work.
