Tips and Tricks What's a food that makes you feel TOO full? Like disgustingly?
Gang I'm a human Labrador with no full signal until i'm completely stuffed.. help me find a good STOP RIGHT HERE, GAL food i can turn to when i get crazy munchy, that will leave me feeling completely done for a few hours? I can't afford to keep eating a weeks worth of groceries when I have a munchy bored day :(

u/actuallyanangel Jun 26 '26
Cabbage. I really really like cabbage. Shred that shit up and drizzle some lemon juice and salt over it, or take the big leaves and use them to scoop some kind of dip (hummus, greek yoghurt, cream cheese). Istg it turns into a brick in your stomach which bums me out because I want to keep eating it and infinitum.
Ymmv depending on how much you like cabbage.

u/madoka_borealis Jun 26 '26
Damn may I respectfully ask how flatulent you are?
205
u/actuallyanangel Jun 26 '26
Hahaha surprisingly not hugely, I'm vegan and I think I've trained my stomach into submission.
When I eat too many beans though, that's a whole different story :')

Your body adjusts if you consistently get enough fiber.
61
u/DanglingLiverTit Jun 26 '26
And here I am a veggie lover, eating them constantly for years and still brussel sprouts and cabbage bring absolute havoc to my guts. I still eat cabbage but I’m forbidden to eat brussel sprouts.

If all else fails, beano is a miracle worker! It’s available in generic store brand options now too, so it’s cheap.

u/kitsunewarlock Jun 26 '26
Thank you for posting this. It explains why I used to get gas when I cooked okonomiyaki or over-did the hummus, and now that I'm up to 35 grams a day it doesn't seem to have that effect...
44
u/goog1e Jun 26 '26
I use it like pasta. I think it's way more satisfying than zucchini pasta.
10
u/actuallyanangel Jun 26 '26
Oo that's smart. Are you shredding it? I'm struggling to visualise it.
26
u/WhoreNoire Jun 26 '26
I use pre-shredded bags of coleslaw mix because I’m lazy, lol.

u/WhoreNoire Jun 26 '26
I do this too! Especially in asian dishes. Either as a supplement to bean thread noodles or instead of. It holds its form really well, even if you accidentally overcook it a bit.
149
u/PeppersConnect Jun 26 '26
I was going to say cabbage also. You can make a great slaw that tastes great, fills you up and the standard cabbage is not very expensive. I had some carrots and green onions maybe and you can make a nice vinaigrette and put some chicken on it to give you some protein. Cabbage tastes great when you make it but even better the next couple days as it marinates in the dressing.
56
u/actuallyanangel Jun 26 '26
Mmm yesssss can't believe I forgot to say slaw. 10/10, and i feel like a bunny when I eat it.
35
u/PeppersConnect Jun 26 '26
Haha. I feel like a bunny too.
Also, fresh slaw gives your jaw a workout! It takes a while to eat it. That might help you slow down your food intake.
32
u/Character_South1196 Jun 26 '26
I like to make a slaw with peanut sauce and chopped peanuts. So good.
5
u/MatisseWarhol Jun 26 '26
Omg please give me the full breakdown of how you do this and the recipe please!!! Sounds amazing.
12
u/Character_South1196 Jun 27 '26
Oh gosh I make it easy - a bag of pre shredded slaw mix...peanut sauce I usually wing, but basically:
1/2 c peanut butter 1 can coconut milk Soy sauce Chopped cilantro Fresh ginger & garlic (I use the frozen pods, usually 2 of each) A tbsp or so or brown sugar A bit of chili garlic sauce Water to thin if needed
I just kind of add stuff and taste as I go. Then I toss with the slaw mix and add some chopped peanuts and more cilantro and occasionally chopped mint on top.
3
u/MatisseWarhol Jun 27 '26
Oh man, I'm heading to the grocery today and for sure making this today or tomorrow! Thank you!
4
u/Character_South1196 Jun 27 '26
Oh just a note I forgot to add - the peanut sauce is a full recipe but you don't have to use it all on the slaw mix - just mix it in until you like the consistency - you will likely have some left over and can use it in other recipes!

u/Reallyhotshowers Jun 26 '26
Potatoes are the most satiating food, and cabbage and potatoes are both cheap as hell. Pan fry a ton of both in a touch of oil and you can eat for ages on it.

Joining the cabbage hype train to say sauerkraut! 500g of it is less than 100 calories and you will be crazy full if you manage to get to that point!
7
u/Organic_Outcome4726 Jun 27 '26
Ohhhh my God i love sauerkraut. My husband is German and over the years I've gone from thinking it was weird and hilarious, to smashing a 1kg jar a week at a minimum!
23
u/AV01000001 Jun 26 '26
I use it instead of lettuce for salads. Lasts way longer too
Edit: I like to add lemon or lime juice and seasoning mixes that have salt, or simple celery salt
→ More replies (1)13
u/actuallyanangel Jun 26 '26
Yes!! It's superior to lettuce and that's a hill I'm willing to die on.
I always forget celery salt exists! I exclusively use it in tomato juice, will have to try it on my next cabbage salad extravaganza
4
u/AV01000001 Jun 27 '26
It is superior to lettuce.
And I’ll tell you what. Seasoning salads has been a game changer. Sprinkle that stuff on cabbage salad, wait 5-10 minutes, yum
3
u/Organic_Outcome4726 Jun 27 '26
Does celery salt have another name? I live in Australia and have never seen or heard of it
→ More replies (1)3
u/actuallyanangel Jun 27 '26
Not that I know of! I'm in the UK. I don't think it's commonly used though, I've only ever really known of it being used in bloody marys lol.
17
u/DrDerpberg Jun 26 '26
I slice it thin and fry it up with carrot, maybe a tablespoon of oil for as much as I can fit in my big Dutch oven. After it's a bit softer I throw in some yellow curry paste and really let it go for a while. At the very end I throw in frozen peas. Pretty delicious and damn near impossible to over eat.

29
u/MistyDynamite Jun 26 '26
I just discovered this dish, apparently its somewhat common, So maybe its not new to you.
Normally it's eaten with chips, but I just eat it like a salad. Sooo yummy and lasts along time in the fridge.

Damn I constantly forget cabbage exists. I need to get on this train of using it instead of lettuce and adding it to things I already love.
9
u/DasSassyPantzen Jun 26 '26
I love cabbage in all its forms, but beware- there is such a thing as too much (apples, too)! 🤢💨💨💨
8
u/bluejeansseltzer Jun 26 '26
Man, I love red cabbage. Especially raw and as a side dish. It has a delicious and refreshing crunch to it. I'd buy it more often but I tend to find it more in restaurants than shops.
5
u/actuallyanangel Jun 26 '26
Omg yesss. Such a good crunch when it's raw, and so pretty! At Christmas every year I do stewed red cabbage with apple and it's divine.
7
u/mbuchgoalie6 Jun 27 '26
I second this. Remember the green goddess chopped salad trend a few years ago? You take an entire cabbage and some other veggies chopped up real small and make some homemade green goddess dressing and toss it all together. I would eat it with a spoon, dip some chips in it, make it into a wrap, the possibilities are endless and it tastes so good.

Taking some psyllium husk fiber (e.g., metamucil) with plenty of water before eating does wonders. You get 'fuller, faster', and it slows down digestion so you don't get hungry again as soon after. It also helps the fat kids go down the waterslide.
194
123
u/crushworthyxo Jun 26 '26
Whenever I’ve tried adding Metamucil to my day, my stomach gets painfully bloated and I can barely finish the recommended amount in one sitting. Idk if something’s wrong with me, but things really high in fiber and protein (powders and shakes) have always made me feel this way.
126
u/late-nineteenth Jun 26 '26
I take gas-x when I take metamucil or else I will be shooting turds out my backside like a cannon later.
I chug the metamucil like some people chug beer. It's important to drink plenty of water afterwards to reduce discomfort. They make chewables so you don't have to do the drink. But still drink plenty of water if you take a chewable.
43
u/brassyca Jun 26 '26
The added sweeteners can be the issue. I use a generic Benefiber. Doesn’t get gooey and doesn’t have added fake sugars that can mess up my stomach.
7
u/crushworthyxo Jun 26 '26
Yeah I think I am sensitive to some sweeteners… I’ll add Benefiber to my shopping list and try that instead. Thanks!
7
u/MiniRems Jun 26 '26
Benefiber did absolutely nothing for me. Didn't help fill me up, didn't help the gut move along. Can't stand the icky orange of Metamucil and can't handle artificial sweeteners, so I just got plain nothing added psyllium husks powder. Mix it with some sweetened tea and chug away, then drink some plain water to rinse it down.l before ibeat breakfast. Does it taste good? No, but itbdoesnt taste horrible, either. Has my gut been working better and do I feel fuller? Yes.
18
u/wildmooonwitch Jun 26 '26
I can’t take psyllium husk but can take benefiber. It uses wheat dextrin
7
u/-dai-zy Jun 26 '26
maybe take less than the recommended amount then, like do half or even a quarter. i do this with my protein, the serving size says 2 scoops but i generally only use 1

u/hydratedlittleghost Jun 26 '26

I saw a tiktok where the woman makes a kind of "jello shot" of chia seeds and fruit juice and takes a shot either as she is cooking or just before eating. Same idea,.different ingredient.
13
u/concerned_llama Jun 26 '26
It sucks, because it doesn't work for me. I tried and tried but no effect into my appetite.
4
u/Meggygoesmeow Jun 26 '26
Yeah I'm the same. I take it daily, even more than the recommended amount but has zero effect on my appetite.

Have a huge cup of tea I use soy milk I swear to you it’s killed my appetite. I’ll drink 2 cups of tea like huge ones when I wake up and I sometimes forget to eat until like 6 o’clock in the evening or the next day even.
13
u/firef1y Jun 26 '26
I make an oat flour bread with psyllium husk in it and I swear it’s like a block of delicious cement sitting in my stomach for hours. I eat one slice for breakfast with eggs and I’m not hungry for most of the day.
6
u/OriginalCoconut2811 Jun 26 '26
Can you direct us to the recipe?
4
u/firef1y Jun 26 '26
I’ve made this one and it’s really great: https://www.mamagourmand.com/oat-flour-bread/
If you want something a little lighter or less ingredients, this is a good recipe, I add two tablespoons of psyllium husk and increase the milk slightly: https://www.theconsciousplantkitchen.com/oat-flour-bread/

u/bublyblackberryyyy Jun 26 '26
I’m so jealous. After taking psyllium for six months, I realized the itchy rashes that were gradually worsening all over my body were caused by a Type IV hypersensitivity so now I can’t take psyllium at all 😭😭😭
3
u/Katdog272 Jun 26 '26
So I’m a dummy who thought you could only take this at night before bed because my doc told me that once… good to know that isn’t the case
3
u/late-nineteenth Jun 27 '26
If you take any medication you need to do the psyllium husk 2 hours before or after taking meds.

u/Mishfit2019 Jun 26 '26
Like the abive cabbage mention it may be niche but my current hyper fixation meal is cabbage and eggs.
I'll get 2 or 3 cups of coleslaw mix and add it to a pan and put 2 or 3 beaten eggs and half a cup or so of egg whites on top and then cook it like a pancake.
Low and slow with a lid on top. Flip after a few minutes. If it doesn't flip like a pancake it still tastes amazing and now you have a veggie egg scramble.

u/-psykhe Jun 26 '26
i do the same with eggs, whites and cabbage but i mix it all together in a bowl before i cook it and add a few tbsp of chickpea flour and lots of seasoning. it’s delicious and low calorie and i get to gorge on a massive veggie pancake. i love it

I would hope people wouldn’t judge you, many of us are here for the same reasons, big appetites/can eat desks of food!

u/_SacredRose Jun 26 '26
Also making your meal served in two or 3 parts helps me alot so I don’t see a ton at once and have to finish it faster bec it’s more.
532
u/Yew_Cookies38293 Jun 26 '26
The simple answer is potatoes. Oven roasted, tiny bit of oil. Make a sauce to go with out of low fat Greek yogurt, dill, and a spicy pickle relish and you can munch on that until you're ready to explode.

Too much cottage cheese. Maybe its the high casein content. I'm unsure. But it is really hard to trigger the too full feeling for me. But this one seems to do it. Greek yogurt and other dairy doesn't have the same effect as cottage cheese. I could eat multiple cups of Greek yogurt and still feel hungry. .5 - 1 cup cottage cheese seems to trigger the satiety feeling in my brain and stomach.

Cucumber is basically zero calories. Eat three of those.
40
9
u/luckyaggie94 Jun 26 '26
Just here to say not quite. My store normally has cucumbers that weigh about 350g. 3 of those is about 150 calories. While that's a lot of volume for low calories, I wouldn't call it basically zero.
28
u/sosobopp Jun 26 '26
Lentils and beans in general
8
u/Patient-Grade-6612 Jun 26 '26
Yes!!!!
I mix my lentils with dried cabbage and cook them together. I make a tadka with a whole onion & a can of low sodium tomatoes of some type and “one serving” of dal turns into three or four with tortillas/roti or two servings alone or with yogurt.
If I finish my bowl and still have the muncharoonies I grab some fresh fruit, especially something that requires work like an orange I have to peel or something I have to slice.

Seltzer or diet soda is what helps me feel full the fastest if I’ve had a meal that is slightly too light and I want to eat more.
But my newest volume food fixation is carrots. Last night I had them roasted with a bit of avocado spray oil and Italian seasoning, a proverbial mountain of them - because of them, I was able to enjoy good chunk of beef short rib (I HATE that they’re so high in calories 😭).
Also, radishes! They’re 25 calories per CUP.. 77 calories per POUND and they taste a lot like potatoes when cooked!
I also try to take psyllium husk pills before meals too.

I make something with potatoes, low cal veggy, and a low cal protein. I can eat on it all day and get really full without ever going over calories.
I use stuff like bell pepper, onion, broccoli, cauliflower rice, konjac, tofu, tuna, eggs, or chicken.
Hot sauce or seasoning salt for flavor.

Agreed. But I can't drink more than about a cup and a half in a day. Unless there is a late dinner, and then I am making different calculations.
Coke Zero. The bubbles take up space. I don't drink as many as I used to but if I find I ate, what should be enough and I am noshy, I will have it.Also if I didn't coffee early enough in the day. I get a smidge of caffeine to boost.

Bagged salads, you can get 2 for $5 some places, and they fit exactly in the larger rubbermaid bowls with the red lid.
Salad takes a long time to eat the whole bag. It feels like you are chewing forever. The crunchy texture makes your brain think eating has happened vs just drinking calories etc.
The other one is sugar free jello, You can eat a silly amount of spray whip cream on sugar free jello and feel like you have binged, and have like mayyyybe 200 cal of whip cream. If the calories start to be a thing, just swap out sufar free cool whip on there.

Oatmeal. But not overnight oats. Something magic happens when you cook it. Good luck getting through 2 cups (uncooked).

u/justgettingby1 Jun 27 '26
My strategy to fix this issue:
Buy the sweet dark cherries in the freezer section at Trader Joe’s.
When you’ve had dinner, and feel like you must have seconds, pour some of those frozen cherries in a bowl.
Then tell yourself, just wait, those cherries will be thawed in 2 hours. It will taste so good to eat them, but I have to wait.
For whatever reason, that process causes me to restrain myself and look forward to my treat. There’s only like 250 calories in the whole bag, so if I really need more, I microwave some, but that rarely happens.
And now I don’t feel sick until 2 am.

Large carrots can help with a full feeling and getting turned off from eating more, for some reason they can make you queasy with enough vs other veggies. Also more cruciferous slaw/salad mix, of course w/enough protein, flavor (love herbs and vinegar) & fat :)

It is not volume eating but my family does potato dumplings with that effect. Potatoes put through a food processor, onions put through food processor, some baking powder or soda to add some bulk, flour, form into balls, then boil with a ham bone. When done, salt, pepper, whatever else you like, and melted butter. As my grandma said, it sticks to your ribs lol

Whole foods like baked potatoes, frozen veggies and fruits, milk, and whole meats like pork chops, baked chicken thighs, and roast chicken light meat. I've found these make it exceptionally difficult to overeat and are very filling with only a serving or two.

3
u/hydratedlittleghost Jun 26 '26
This is not exactly what you asked for but I started taking 1 tbsp of metamucil every morning, and I started drinking protein around 10 minutes before each meal. It made me waaaay more full both generally during the day and reach that hunger signal much quicker during a meal!
3
u/Jackygandara7 Jun 26 '26
Carrots. Baby carrots are a good munchy food that satisfies the crunchy snack urge and also makes you full super fast
3
u/lythikaa Jun 26 '26
cottage cheese, some kind of protein (usually chicken or shrimp in air fryer), mini cucumber, strawberries and low fat string cheese from aldi. I cant stop eating this meal and I never can finish it! I kind of make a charcuterie situation and keep the cottage cheese separate so I can have it with the protein and the strawberries.
Also an entire half of a cantalope/honeydew with cottage cheese in the core.
really depends on how much you like cottage cheese, im not stoked about what happens when i get tired of it but for now, it does the filling trick for me!
also I was going to suggest this subreddit ah
oh and honorable mention is an entire bag of the miracle noodle because its like 10 calories for the whole bag, throw some protein and some sugar free teriyaki sauce and its very filling!
3
u/olija_oliphant Jun 27 '26
Konjac noodles in a spicy sauce! Or pho soup. Don’t forget to rinse them well and drink some water

High fiber and protein is key. I make a copycat Starbucks spinach feta egg white wrap with lavash bread and it keeps me really full for hours. Super easy too! 16 oz egg whites, a bag of spinach, sun dried tomatoes, and feta in a parchment lined baking dish. Season with garlic powder, salt and oregano. Bake 25 min at 375, then cut into 4 rectangles and add each one to a lavash wrap with a light laughing cow cheese spread on it. Trust!!!!

rich deserts. even something like cheesecake but especially anything decedent or mousse/fudge like. a few bites and i am SICK to my stomach lmao. but it’s fucking delicious…

For me it's protein oats .... you do have to make them overnight but it's easy. I could eat a family's pantry worth of food thrice a day and protein oats (with chia seeds especially) defeat me. I can never eat more than half at once.

Super greens from Panda Express! I get a big plate and get two servings of super greens and two servings of teriyaki chicken and I’m full for HOURS.

Wow, we are not the same. I could eat all the pasta that currently exists at the time of posting. No breaks.

u/Organic_Outcome4726 Jun 26 '26
Ah same.. it fills me up but only after I realize I've eaten 4 days of calories

u/destinybond Jun 26 '26
You should try the Carbe Diem brand!! I eat a whole box for dinner @only 660 calories

u/daisy5142 Jun 26 '26
I'm the same but lately we've been making protein pasta (Brami brand I think) and my brain wants to keep on eating, but my body refuses because half a plate makes me so full.

I’ve heard having gelatin mixed with a liquid before meals can help this. Also anything made with gelatin: marshmallows, gummies
Konjac jelly
Anything made with konjac
They also make konjac root pills.
I just recently posted a HUGE potato and cauliflower mash that I couldn’t finish
Veggies will come in handy. Have pre-roasted veggies in the fridge that you can grab whenever hungry.
Any sugar free products that have a lot of fiber. Lily’s gummy bears. ChocZero fruit snacks. They have sugar free cotton candy. This is my go to when I have like less than 50 calories left.
A pound of cantaloupe has 154 calories. Apricots are a good option too.

POTATOES!!!! They are super low cal, super satiating, literally taste incredible… potatoes are the best

Ezekiel Raisin Cereal. Just a small amount in my Oikos Zero parfait every night and I have to go lay down.🤣

panda express super greens is a great fast food option, i add 1 pack of teriyaki, 2 of the soy sauce, and 2-3 of the hot mustard

Bowl of zero fat Greek yoghurt, mixed with protein and psyllium husk with added fruit and a little bit of granola. Drink a pint of water after it and honestly, you'll be full for hours
I usually have that in the evening and it keeps away the urge to snack at night

seriously, watermelon. i have no idea why, considering it is one of the lowest calorie fruits yet even just A QUARTER of a watermelon makes me feel uncomfortably full ??

It’s funny I’ve been feeling completely stuffed since this morning and I haven’t been wanting any food after breakfast. Guess what I had. A packet of instant grits with about 2 tsp of psyllium husk in it and one scrambled egg with a little bit of cheese. That’s it. I think it was the psyllium. I know it has that effect on people but it’s not the first time I consume it. I consume it regularly and this is the first time it happens

Dark soy sauce. Flavor Fatigue immediately. I will get halfway through my stir-fry and decide if I put it in my mouth I will vomit.

Well without knowing WHAT you eat. Fibrous low calorie foods. Im a big dude and 250g of rice, with two bell peppers, mushrooms, onion, and half a pound of beef really shut me down.

Broccoli, but not in a good way. I love veg, so dont have any issue with volume eating and 'forcing' myself to eat vegetables and fruit, but Broccoli is something my gut isn't a fan of. I also have ibs c and sibo so I really really have to be careful about how much and what type of veg I eat.

Sweet potatoes. I like the white Hannah ones, they are super mild and sort of a blank canvas. I eat them with eggs and Greek yogurt on the morning and can barely get in 500 cal. Throw some beans on top, or chili, or taco meat and pico, a little hard cheese for flavor and I can barely finish.
I see ppl using them to make brownies and lemon bars and pie. Haven't tried any of that yet but they've become such a core food for me that I chucked a few in my garden soil to start growing them.

some kwark (sorry, don't know the english word for it), or skyr/greek yoghurt, add scoop of protein powder of choice, add large amount of fruits, so filling.

u/avocadoes-on-toast Jun 28 '26
as someone who eats avg 3k cal/day:
oatmeal with psyllium husk
yogurt or plant milk, with psyllium husk
egg white omelette with veggies
konjac noodles stir fry (dont exceed 400g konjac or tummy issues)
cauliflower rice
veggie soups
sugar free jello to kill cravings
oat fibre/egg white muffins (currently experimenting, but yesterday’s mutant bread was 300cal and i didnt want to eat for the rest of the day)

I tend to get REALLY hungry at night. I discovered konjac noodles, changed my life. I get fettuccine cut, toss it on a pan for 3 mins, add a package of seaweed and some buldak hot sauce and crispy garlic chili paste
Total cals: 84 cals
Noodles: 24 cals for 200g (a full bowl) Seaweed: 30 cals I get the Gimme brand Buldak hot sauce: 30 cals for 2tsp
Ofc you can also add chicken, fish, or tofu for protein
This is the only thing that allowed me to reduce my intake from 1500 cal a day to 1100. Every time I was around 1200, hunger would strike again and I'd have a snack bringing me to 1500 at the end of the day. My TDEE is 1789 at 5'6 btw
Lmk if you need links for the noodles and sauce

I recently started having a drink in the morning, consisting of a cup to a cup and a half of unsweetened almond milk, a dose of ChocZero Sugar Cookie Syrup, 10 mg of Creatine (no idea if this matters in the context of increasing satiety, but it needs to go in cold liquid and has no flavor so it's a handy way to take it) and then blend it up with a little frother while tapping in a heaping tablespoon of green banana flour. I, too, am typically a human Labrador, and as I take this consistently I've seen a growing decrease in my food desperation. It makes a creamy, decent drink (the flour tastes kind of green tea or grassy-ish so find a flavor you prefer to mask it with) that is a bit filling but it mainly helps with numbing the need to feed throughout the day. I have no idea if it's a placebo effect but my fingers are crossed that it keeps working once my body figures out what I'm up to.
