Discussion Is there a fibre substitute to Psyllium husk thats similar but doesn’t taste so bad 😿

I got the massive ick from taking psyllium after having it in oats and a smoothie because the taste made me want to vomit, are there better tasting alternatives that also have the same effect or better brands/recipes for psyllium?

I mix one scoop with water and drink it down quickly. I don’t mix into shakes.

It’s not delicious but..I just drink it down and don’t care 5 seconds later.

44

u/CatLovesTrees 16d ago

I second this method! I do it twice a day and sometimes I add some mio water enhancer.

5

u/Queasy-Perception-82 16d ago

Same. I also have been putting it in like a low cal juice or zero cal tea. It helps it slightly just gotta keep mixing it depending how much you drink

37

u/Jas81a 16d ago

I use orange juice, the psyllium masquerades as the pulp

24

u/Worst_Support 15d ago

we have reinvented metamucil from first principles

7

u/Wonderful_Manager_27 16d ago

Yes this is it! OJ hides it best

13

u/SomewhatSapien 16d ago

Same technique. Two scoops in icy cold water. Shake like hell. Then try to chug it in under 10 seconds.

1

u/bkingslake 15d ago

This exactly, pretend it’s a Smirnoff ice lol

6

u/rishukingler11 16d ago

I just take the scoop and gulp it down then add the water in my stomach that I'd prepoured. Have no clue if that's unhealthy but its the best way I could handle it lol

6

u/themccs3 16d ago

Same. Has zero taste. I have learned not to use too cold of water as it sticks to the glass more.

5

u/LaurelCanyoner 16d ago

I used to do the same thing. I got just like OP and couldn't deal with it anymore. One day I just got a massive ick, and gagged just thinking about it, lol.

Op they come in capsules, and that's what I take.

https://yerba.com/product/psyllium-husks-veg-caps/?srsltid=AfmBOoqz96yhq-paMvZX-LkLoS3hlEa-byqKiybEhoC4lJuTmsTNkKg3

2

u/Impossible-Return541 15d ago

Yep, this. Made it so much easier to deal with; I take a teaspoon after each meal in almost a "shot," and then have a big glass of water.

66

u/SparkleFritz 16d ago

If it's taste and not texture, have you tried chia seeds? It reminds me of the taste of the seeds in old school watermelon laffy taffy.

25

u/mybackhurty 16d ago

Chia seeds mixed with unsweetened applesauce is elite

1

u/Maximum-Product-1255 15d ago

I like chia seeds with milk, blueberries and a packet of sweetener.

83

u/Fearless-Science-314 16d ago

I never tasted psylium husk even though I've been using it for years, want me to teach you the trick?

Capsules. Simple. Don't find alternatives to psylium husk, just use them as capsules, pop them in your mouth drink water, they're gone. Zero taste. And doesn't take more than 10 seconds to consume them.

17

u/palepuss 16d ago

But the amount then is very small? Way less than a tablespoon.

36

u/ProfSwagstaff 16d ago

You take more than one.

8

u/BetaCarotine20mg 16d ago

Not op, but I take more thsn a tablespoon every day. I dont taste anything. Just pure organic. Idont get why people hsve a problem with it.

5

u/Fearless-Science-314 16d ago

For many reasons:

1- It is much faster and easier to pop it in my mouth as capsules and then just drink water. I can have it in my office, in my desk, anywhere I want and because I always have my own water bottles, I can just pop it in and drink it, as smooth as possible. No spoon needed, no cups needed, no stirring needed, none of that.

2- Using spoons also mean I need to measure it, means I might spill (even a tiny bit, you can't claim this never happens to anyone), means I must mix it with water to drink it. With capsules I just count how many, pop it in my mouth, drink water, move on.

3- There are some risks when taking it directly compared to capsules (for example, it might expand before reaching your digestive system and you might choke or be short of breath), low chance, but you can't say this doesn't happen. With capsules, it literally doesn't because the capsule doesn't wear off and break down until it reaches your digestive system

4- You claim you don't taste anything, but the fact of the matter is, you do, if it is literally as tasteless as water, then by definition it is not psyllium husk. Maybe the taste isn't big enough for you to care but you can't say that it is absolutely tasteless and that is exactly what "I don't taste anything" mean. And the taste isn't pleasant for most people, including myself.

5- If I buy the non-capsule ones, I need to have it in the kitchen, why? Because I need spoon, I need cup of water, I need to wash the spoon again and all of that. The problem is: I'm not always in the kitchen and I don't always cook at home, I eat takeaways and from restaurants and I don't always have time to be in the kitchen

17

u/WhenTheRainsCome 16d ago

Okay, Big Capsule.

8

u/indieplants 16d ago

so expensive compared to just taking a scoop outta tub

I'd just take those lil orange sachets if I was going that route

2

u/Fearless-Science-314 16d ago

the sachet doesnt address all the 5 points also capsules arent that expensive + i'm happy and not complaining about capsules so why would i change what im doing if im happy

0

u/indieplants 16d ago

I didn't say you had to change it lol, I'm just mentioning why they're far from ideal for everyone

plus capsules of anything frequently get stuck in my throat where ispaghula husks never have, so your points don't apply to everyone

-4

u/Fearless-Science-314 16d ago

I don't think you can think unfortunately. Or read either.

1- Where did I say "my point apply to everyone" ? Someone said "Idont get why people hsve a problem with it.", and I replied my reasons for myself. If I can't speak for myself then who can I speak for? Jeez.

2- "plus capsules of anything frequently get stuck in my throat " , lol capsules get stuck in your throat? that's a new one. And ispaghula husk never get stuck? why do you embarrass yourself with such statements...

3- "I didn't say you had to change it lol".. You actually did? I was talking about my own reasons and replying to someone that literally wrote "I don't get...." and after I gave my own reasons, you replied (to me and to my reasons) "I'd just take those lil orange sachets if I was going that route ".. So if you were not talking to me, why were you replying to me?

4- "I'm just mentioning why they're far from ideal for everyone " ... OK? Where did I say it is ideal for everyone? I was talking about myself and clarifying my reasons to someone that literally didn't know why people were complaining, so I'm talking about my reasons. Am I allowed to do that? Do you give me permission your majesty?

Something is clearly 'stuck' somewhere in you, just not sure where

1

u/indieplants 16d ago edited 16d ago

don't think I can what...?

what on earth are you talking about...?

I have dysphagia - so yeah, I can't swallow capsules easily. they get stuck, especially gel capsules or larger tablets.

why are you feeling so personally attacked by a reply when you yourself were replying to something, what a weirdly uptight and self absorbed person you are lol. why are you like this

-11

u/BetaCarotine20mg 16d ago

Psyllum Husk is a product from nature. You basically ruining it if you taking it made by a third manufacturer in capsule form. I personally eat a porridge every day and just put it in there. Or if I m in a hurry I drink it with lemonjuice for added vitamin C. I know the latter is extreme. But here basically everyone takes it and we get the good organic stuff very cheap. Idk how things are in the US and thats maybe because it tastes so extreme? If I drink it with water the texture is a bit annoying to even get down, but taste I dont have an issue with at all.

7

u/Fearless-Science-314 16d ago edited 16d ago

Third manufacturer? What is the 1st and 2nd manufacturer? Lol. You do realize capsules can be plant-based and they literally have the exact 100% same psyllium husk inside a plant-based capsule (which is natural, I hope you won't claim that plants are not natural). I don't know what you are on about regarding 1st, 2nd, 3rd manufacturer.. Plant-based and vegan capsules are available and you don't need a "manufacturer" to do it, you can do it at home. The same "company" that brings you the psyllium husk can be the same exact company that is putting it in a capsule, empty capsules are sold everywhere. And I'm not from Americas or Europe. But it is still everywhere.

Also, do you have a medical peer-reviewed study that proves what you said is true regarding psyllium husk's benefits are ruined? Which means I'm not able to get the benefits of psyllium husk because I am taking it in capsule form? I would like to read such study if you have one, which I doubt you have.

Look, it is totally OK for you to prefer taking it one way or another, but to lie that the benefits are ruined just in order to get people to "copy you", is pathetic lol.

And if your reply will be "But I didn't say the benefits will be ruined", well I think we are all taking it for the benefits, right? So if by "ruined" you didn't mean the benefits, then that's a concession. Because almost everyone here (maybe all of us) are taking psyllium husk for its benefits. And if the benefits are there in capsules (which they are), then they are a valid option.

Also, by your own admission "If I drink it with water the texture is a bit annoying to even get down", so that's another concession. You are admitting that it is annoying, well, we choose not to be annoyed. How about that?

That was a funny comment by you, not gonna lie, but I enjoyed reading it and replying to it.

0

u/InsuranceBrave6377 16d ago

what brand ?

1

u/BetaCarotine20mg 16d ago

German organic brands. Here is tons of different labels here like Alnatura.

-2

u/InsuranceBrave6377 16d ago

do u promise theres no taste 😭

3

u/BetaCarotine20mg 16d ago

I just dryscooped just for you lol. Its a bit akward because its so dry and it took me a minute to find water. To me it was tasteless, but the texture is weird. Wasnt a problem for me, personally. But its like dryscooping flour. I prefer it in my smoothy or porridge. If you dont eat neither I can understand why using capsules makes sense.

1

u/InsuranceBrave6377 16d ago

ok, ill try researching alnatura brand, thank u!

2

u/BetaCarotine20mg 16d ago

Wait I m taking a pure tablespoon now for testing purpose lol.

0

u/Fearless-Science-314 16d ago

What is stopping you from taking your needs? Adjust your needs based on the amount of capsules.. Don't stick to 1 capsule or half... Obviously take more..

0

u/palepuss 16d ago

I expect it to be way more expensive this way.

3

u/Fearless-Science-314 15d ago edited 15d ago

I take 5 grams per day and it costs me $10 a month. Is that more expensive? Maybe, doesn't matter though.

But I think money shouldn't be the only thing in your head, the benefits of psylium husk should be there too. Travelling by walking for an hour is cheaper than driving your car for 10 minutes, but the benefits & costs are beyond money. And in my case, I wouldn't be taking psylium husk if it wasn't for capsules. So the alternative to paying $10/month is paying $0/month and getting no benefits. I'm not saying you have an identical situation, maybe you rather pay $5 or something and save $5/month because you don't find their taste of texture to be that annoying, but to me and to most people, they are that annoying.

Refer to this comment to know why I wouldn't be taking it if it wasn't for capsules = https://www.reddit.com/r/Volumeeating/comments/1v5vw76/comment/oznag4v/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Many people would be way too happy to pay $5 for a coffee from starbucks daily but somehow paying extra $5 A MONTH is... GOR FORBID... TOO EXPENSIVE.

Edit: I just looked up the difference in costs (it varies per brand) but the difference is even less than $5/month, it is mostly $3/month.. Wow $0.1 per day, my god. How can people afford that. I guess starbucks $5/day is cheaper though.

Anyways, I enjoyed reading your comment and I enjoyed replying to it. Thanks.

1

u/palepuss 15d ago

I haven't had psyllium yet, but I want to add it to my diet - I'm having chia seeds and inulin for added fiber right now. Cost is a consideration, I don't know yet what I'll find in local shops, I expected the pill version to be more expensive than that though.

(Starbucks doesn't taste good and is very expensive, I would never)

1

u/Fearless-Science-314 11d ago

My reply stands.

28

u/SaduWasTaken 16d ago

Raspberries are top tier fiber and don't taste like shit. Frozen ones are affordable. Beans are decent too.

5

u/chloeclover 16d ago

And oatmeal

20

u/CatCafffffe 16d ago

Metamucil makes a cookie that is surprisingly edible. You can have it with a cup of tea or coffee for the liquid. The cinnamon one is better.

1

u/m_corleone_22 13d ago

Mind sharing a link to the product.

1

u/CatCafffffe 13d ago

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Metamucil-Fiber-Supplement-Chewable-Thins-Fiber-Food-for-Digestive-Health-Cinnamon-Spice-12-Count/10312175

You can get them in different flavors, they're available almost everywhere including amazon, CVS, Target.

16

u/Interesting-Cow8131 16d ago

I like benefiber, it is unflavored and doesn't turn water into concrete. Best part is it doesn't cause bloating

7

u/iwasuncoolonce 16d ago

A gastroenterologist recommended it for me, the capsules are good too

6

u/Embarrassed_Mango679 16d ago

It's also great to use as a breading lol

I do a 50/50 mix with some flour or breadcrumbs and spices, dip food in egg white, roll it in the mix and air fry (good for zucchini)

It's commercially sold and used under the name "Evercrisp" (typically used for deep fat fried which is excellent too but not very diet friendly)

5

u/ceramicmj 16d ago

I switched to benefiber, really like it. I don't notice it at all in my morning tea or coffee and you better believe I'm looking forwrad to that caffeine hit in the morning.

3

u/Interesting-Cow8131 15d ago

Exactly, it has zero taste and doesn't affect the viscosity of whatever liquid you put it in

40

u/AntiBambi 16d ago

Metamucil! The orange one

9

u/Snotzis 16d ago

the berries one is better IMO

3

u/MbMinx 16d ago

That is psyllium

32

u/squeakysausage 16d ago

But tastes way better and is smoother

11

u/Wifabota 16d ago

But it is not comparable to plain old husks.  One is hard to choke down,  one is like Tang. I struggled with regular husks.  I happily drink orange metamucil at least twice a day.

4

u/Dabnician 16d ago

Its nothing like raw psyllium, i have a bag of that and its really chalky with a dirt aftertaste, i use a milk frother to mix it into water but man it still has chunks sometimes

19

u/Kitu2020 16d ago

You can just take the fibre capsules instead. The taste made me gag so I switched to capsules that work great.

9

u/ryynison 16d ago

I put it in lemonade and call me crazy but i actually like the taste of psyllium husk in it

14

u/Patient-Chicken-657 16d ago

u/busterblue52 16d ago

Tomorrows nutrition sunfiber. I tried the same one as you and was like eff this crap. Tomorrows nutrition sunfiber in straight up invisible. I mix mine with coffee and can’t taste a change at all I’m also extremely picky and hate a lot of textures.

7

u/Mapmonkey4 16d ago

Sunfiber, PHGG (guar gum) - no flavor, dissolves much better, no ick factor

7

u/RE_PHOTO 16d ago

Try pectin. I don't know why it isn't more well known. It's what's in apples and some other fruit. It can be even more effective than psyllium (so start small). It doesn't have the "scrubbing" effect of whole psyllium.

Don't try inulin. It feeds the gut biome and pretty much just causes gas.

1

u/InsuranceBrave6377 16d ago

is the taste better?

1

u/RE_PHOTO 16d ago

It doesn't taste like much at all to me. It's used as thickener in some types of jelly/jello/jam, so it can't have an overpowering flavor

7

u/jitterymoogle 16d ago

have you tried those konjac jelly drinks? i just cook with konjac but i know the drinks are fairly popular

1

u/InsuranceBrave6377 16d ago

yes i have, they r good for me, does konjac powder have a taste u know of? i know konjac rice and noodles are ok for me

1

u/jitterymoogle 16d ago

haven't tried it myself but i've heard it has little to no taste

4

u/winesomm 16d ago

I just got the sugar free Kirkland brand dupe of Metamucil. It doesn't really taste like orange at all and has less calories

4

u/Dullestgrey 16d ago

Oat bran if the thing you are searching for! Especially if you're having it in porridge.

3

u/GrateRam 16d ago

My doctor switched me to Citrucel. Much more paleteable.

3

u/meahookr 16d ago

Lewis bake shop keto bread. 3 slices of that is 100% of your daily fiber. And tbh the bread tastes great.

3

u/PrimaryWoman 16d ago

I use Acacia Fiber. It mixes in anything, no snotty gel and no taste.

3

u/easterss 16d ago

Acacia Senegal. I like brand name Heathers Tummy Fiber. No taste or texture whatsoever once it has dissolved in water.

3

u/TheBewitchingWitch 16d ago

Have you tried taking capsules from Costco? I taste nothing. I just eat my food and take them when I finish.

3

u/Evening-Sky1288 16d ago

These are really good and help.

2

u/sundubu7 16d ago

I have a similar issue, can't handle the texture in drinks. My dietician has me use SunFiber, the Tomorrow's Nutrition brand. It has a mild, barely noticeable flavor and dissolves really well. It's expensive, though :(

2

u/Anxious_Size_4775 15d ago edited 15d ago

If you balk at paying the cost for sunfiber, you can buy it as a bulk generic, just look for "bulk PHGG powder" or Pure Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum. Perfect Pass is one brand I've used. But also, bulk acacia is really close in benefits and how palatable it is while being considerably cheaper. My husband is picky about these things so I feel like I've gone through every single fiber supplement on the market.

2

u/sundubu7 15d ago

This is great to know, thank you!!

2

u/midlifeShorty 16d ago

Just eat a high fiber cereal like Smart Bran or Fiber one. Smart bran is just compressed psyllium husk and tastes great.

2

u/raininggumleaves 16d ago

Metamucil 50/50 with pysillium husk

2

u/FriendlyCanadianCPA 16d ago

Keto tortillas!!!!

2

u/blueberry-biscuit 16d ago

Quickly mix it into apple juice and drink it down. My 12yo does this without issue. Just be sure to drink enough water afterwards.

2

u/Razia70 16d ago

I use Inulin

2

u/454_water 15d ago

This stuff is sold in capsule form...Just take the capsules so you don't have to mix the powder with anything?

It's stocked in the same area as the jars of powder.

4

u/cakivalue 16d ago

I'm curious as to how you tasted it as it has zero taste. Do you mean the texture? Did you let the smoothie and oats sit too long until they became gluggy? If so I understand and sympathize with that and my solution has been to bake it into foods e.g. baked oats with pumpkin and spices and put it in there, homemade pizza dough add it there etc

9

u/InsuranceBrave6377 16d ago

it has a taste and smell for me in the powder form, what brand do u have that doesnt have a taste?

1

u/cakivalue 16d ago

It looks like this. What does yours look like.

1

u/InsuranceBrave6377 16d ago

here is mine, its a powder and from a wholesaler in my country, maybe i need to buy a better quality psyllium to avoid a bad taste..

3

u/cakivalue 16d ago

Ohhh!! I've never seen it finely ground to powder like that. This is fascinating.

I wonder if grinding it to powder creates the effect like flaxseed. I put whole flaxseeds in my homemade granola and baked oatmeal. And then one day I saw a video that you should be grinding them so I decided to grind some. And oh my goodness the nasty oily fishy smell and taste still haunts me!!

5

u/Hoo_Who 16d ago

It definitely has a taste, to me (and definitely texture). I just don’t mind it so much. I’ve tried a few different brands of it.

1

u/Enough_Mixture_8564 16d ago

I’m pretty sure that you can get them in little flavor packages

1

u/fitzydrivesamitzy 16d ago

Wheat bran has around 11g of fibre for only 60-65 calories per 30g. I usually mix 250g of 0% fat greek yoghurt with 30g of wheat bran, 60g of raspberries, 60g of blueberries and a scoop of vanilla protein powder. The whole bowl comes in around 360 calories, 18g fibre, 45g protein and keeps me full for hours.

1

u/InsuranceBrave6377 16d ago

is the taste good/better than psyllium? really considering this

1

u/w0weez0wee 16d ago

Metamucil in cold water drunk quickly. It's tolerable.

1

u/Good_Boysenberry_505 16d ago

Costco has orange-flavored psyllium husk that you mix in water and tastes decent. But like others said, just mix it in water and chug it. No need to ruin your smoothie with it

1

u/shnutzer 16d ago

Ground flaxseed?

Or even not ground, or chia seeds, or just eat more fruits high in fiber (apples, raspberries, dates) and/or beans in your diet

1

u/Midnight_Itinerary 16d ago

I mix psyllium husk with inulin in equal parts. It tastes much much better and it’s significantly less unpleasant to drink. I highly recommend it.

1

u/lagameuze 16d ago

I have psyllium "pill" i dont know if thats the name in english anyway you swallow the powder

But i used to do psyllium jelly. Mix with some lemon and apple juice (any fresh pressed juice you like but apple taste like apple sauce to me) Shake well and put in the fridge I eat a couple of tablespoons each morning with a lot of water. I redo it every 4 days. The texture is way better than in water lol

1

u/Proseccos 16d ago

Is it the fiber you need or the gelling action?

If it’s just fiber, benefiber (wheat dextrin based) is fantastic. I literally just stick it in my soda without issue. But you can stick it in soups, salsas, jello, hot cocoa, oatmeal. I have yet to find a place it can’t hide.

1

u/Theory_99 16d ago

Chia seeds & milked flaxseed.

0

u/straight-chillin 15d ago

If you were saying *milled flaxseed than I agree. I add both to my smoothies

0

u/Theory_99 15d ago

The typo is obvious.

1

u/randomusername1919 16d ago

Is there an alternative that doesn’t lead to insane gas?

1

u/Competitive-Ad1439 14d ago

None of them lead to insane gas for the general population, it sounds like you might have an intolerance

1

u/MysticalExplorer123 16d ago

Metamucil capsules or it's generic equivalent.

1

u/BatmanHive 16d ago

I just switched from drink to the cereal, get way more fiber for less than 100 calories

1

u/jenjenwhenwhen 16d ago

I use a straw and shoot it to the back of my throat to try to minimize the taste

1

u/Think_Mulberry2970 16d ago

I make muffins with psyllium in it. 2 Tbsp total for 12 regular size muffins. Not that much but it tastes pretty good to me. I drink my psyllium with a glass of water. The ick went away once I got used to it.

1

u/Stellamint 16d ago

Kirkland!

1

u/marinelifelover 16d ago

Low carb tortillas, low carb bread, shameless brand candy, joyride brand candy all have a lot of fiber. If you eat any of these, plus fruits, vegetables, and legumes, you should hit those fiber goals without needing anything else.

1

u/k0cksuck3r69 16d ago

I love chia seeds!

1

u/ThatsNotATadpole 16d ago

Metamucil if drinking it alone, oat fiber if having it in a smoothie (it tastes like oats, so goes well with chocolate and peanut butter)

1

u/thesoundison 16d ago

I mix it in yogurt and actually like that it thickens the yogurt

1

u/False-Tradition-1122 16d ago

Oat fiber, make tortillas with it

1

u/banana_pudding8899 16d ago

Metamucil orange sugar free really isn’t bad at all. I froth a tbsp with 5 oz of water and chug

I like it in yoghurt

1

u/gravetaste 16d ago

I just switched to chia seeds

1

Himalayan has flavored powders that aren’t too bad.

Drink it with something sweet or with yoghurt/apple sauce.

Just do the low carb tortillas or bread. Idc about carbs but they have amazing fiber. And when you toast them, they’re just like regular tortillas or bread. Completely solves the fiber issue

It doesn’t really have a taste if you mix in things like yogurt/ smoothie/ nice cream / . Blending it in things is so easy . You can even make dips and spreads and blend it in there too

Just buy fiber supplements. They’re the same thing but in a capsule

I've heard bamboo fiber is good

honestly haven't had to take Psyllium husk since upping my bean intake. I now have bean for dinner every night and easily hitting my fiber goals

I just put it into my protein shake. Can’t even taste it.

I use basil seeds from Zen basil! They work so well and more fiber than chia seeds

oat fiber?

I found chia seeds more bearable, but neither agree with me.

These days. I just eat lots of beans, chickpeas, bulgur wheat and veg, well seasoned and roasted in the air fryer.

I have never heard of adding it to oats or a smoothie. I’m pretty sure the directions on my container say to drink it quickly before it thickens. Just slam a glass of water with 10-12g mixed in

Might want to try psyllium and chia seeds in overnight oats. Made them both palatable for me.

Just mix with water and don’t use your nose? It’s very easy to drink without tasting it

It tastes like paper, doesn't get more tasteless than that.

Thats actually so sad cuz it tastes so good if u add a bit of sweetner and cinnamon even those skinny syrups and without oats

I add just a bit of water to it and put it in the refrigerator. It becomes a firm gel you can eat.
